Surprisingly, Ehlinger did get asked this question and said that not a single team he interviewed with brought this up to him but he is willing to do anything he can to help the team.

I think ehlinger is the ideal 3rd qb. 46 starts in college. likely to never get meaningful snaps in a game

As a Wolverine fan, I'm always happy when the Colts drafts someone from Big Blue.  I do wish Houston were still on the team though, I see Houston and Paye having very similar playing styles, strengths and weaknesses and I think paye could learn a lot from Houston.  Oh well, I like the draft pick and hopefully Colts can now land Rudnz or Eichenberg in the 2nd.

I'm less than pleased, but being a buckeye doesn't factor in! Paye has a long way to go before being an effective pass rusher, and lack of production in that area. Obviously eye-popping physical numbers.

Additionally I felt offensive tackle was the bigger spot on the team to address, especially with Darrisaw still on the board.

CB is also pretty good, it’s possibly the staff  sees the need at CB to be bigger then DE because of the way Ballard has talked about not giving up too early on pass rushers (ie Turay, Lewis and Banogu)

that's exactly why I don't see an end being selected in the 1st. three 2nd round picks on the roster at that position. it's sink or swim for those guys

My ideal scenario honestly, is trading down far enough that we can gain a 3rd or 4th back, then select T Liam Eichenberg from Notre Dame.

He's good, not flashy, but really good. Already has a relationship with Quenton Nelson too, which doesn't hurt IMO. Might be able to move as far as 37-40 and pull that off. Teven Jenkins or Radunz would be very intriguing also. Cosmi, I guess. I'm not as high on him as some. But his movement skills are really good.

I like Cosmi quite a bit, but the need to replenish picks is paramount. Not just the adding of ta l ent, but talent with the lower cap hit, is really necessary as the Colts get into big contracts for Nelson, Leonard, etc

  5. I think there's an opportunity for a further trade down.

Assuming that Penei, Slater, and Darrisaw are all taken, the next tackles are into a lower tier. And despite what mocks say, I don't see the Colts taking a defensive end based on the quality of players in that group.

So that all means that a drop down to the late 20s-30s, as far as the Colts are concerned, means you can still get a player of equitable value(Rudunz, Cosmi, maybe Jenkins if it's a shorter drop). But the other half of the equation is that someone has to drop at 21 that the Colts may not need or grade highly but someone else does.

For the record, I think the trade is with green bay at 29+a 3rd and a future low round.

  6. 2017 is so frustrating, not because of the draft misses, but because of the decision to only fire Grigson and not Pagano. Even if you thought Pagano had been left with roster holes, by any objective measure he was just a bad head coach with GameDay calls that made no sense. That had to be a clean sweep, but Jim Irsay didn't pull the trigger

  7. Getting Hilton back was a really big deal. If the hadn't then receiver became, imo, third priority after offensive tackle and defensive end. This moves the priority down a peg or two(would still like one in the 5th).

Thats just from a personnel perspective. From the standpoint of a new qb coming in, it was important to have a receiver group intimately aware of the offense.

The Colts have been quiet so far this free agency period.

I'm not surprised. They have 2-3 big contracts to extend(Nelson and Leonard certainly, Smith probably). Also, I think they know that after the initial rush, you're going to have a lot of free agents and not many teams with available money. Better to wait to the Monday after the draft, pick up some players on deal contracts, and on the plus side none of those signings impact the compensatory pick formula

I figured I'd start this and add to it as time permits.  A few things about my thoughts on the draft.  I will post players I like, not players I think the Colts will draft.  IT would be cool if they aligned but I also realize that CB and the Colts are looking 5 years in the future not just 2021.  I also realize, the Colts have about 10 times has much information to evaluate a player as I do, so I don't get upset if the Colts do not draft a player I think they should draft.

I see the Colts biggest needs to address this offseason as OT, QB, DE.  I think, based on some comments of Irsay that the Colts will either roll with Eason or sign/trade for a vet.  Between DE and OT, I think OT is a bigger hole to fill.  The Colts could use a committee to replace Houston in 2021 but you cannot take that same approach to OT.  Now obviously drafting someone like Sewell would be ideal but since the Colts are picking on 21, it's not realistic either.  So, a tackle that I like is Liam Eichenberg, OT Notre Dame, 6-6 305lbs.

My thoughts after watching the Clemson vs Notre dame game

    • I think he could come in and be a day 1 starter
    • Technically he is very sound.  Watching the game, I only saw a couple of times where he let his shoulders get past his feet.  Usually he kept a good base and well balanced
    • Good hand punch.  On running players he did a good job of locking onto the defender and using his body and arms to direct.  On pass protection he did a good job of punching and then bringing his arms back to the ready position to punch again.
    • Keeps his head on a swivel, only once did I see him get surprised by a stunt coming to his area.
    • Works well with his guard.  Did an excellent job of passing off a defender to the guard so he could pick of a stunting lineman or a delayed blitz
    • Struggles against speed.  Does a good job mirroring but does not have the foot quickness to change directions against a speed rusher.  His foot quickness is not poor, but I would rate it as average to above average
    • Seems to have good, functional strength
    • Very long arms and knows how to use them.
    • From reports he has an excellent football IQ

overall there are not a lot of negatives in Liam's game.  On the flip side, there is not a lot of elite in his play either.  But I think, playing next to Nelson, will develop a nasty streak in Eichenberg and he will be very similar to AC, in that you can plug him in at LT and not worry about the position for the next decade or so.  Walter Football has Eichenberg with a 2nd day grade, so some will think #21 is too early for him but I don't think so.  He plays at a crucial position and, IMO can be a day 1 starter, so "reaching" is not out of the question.  Although if the Colts could pull off a trade of 21 and still get in the top of the 2nd round and grab him that would be excellent.

I watched that film the other day as well, seeing pretty much the same thing. Really wanted to highlight his work with the guard; he didn't get caught in any switches. Same in the Alabama game as well. Also in his downside, he really lets people get into his chest.

I started watching Samuel Cosmi from Texas recently. He is a big, finishes blocks well, and does a good job of getting up the field when needed. Maybe gets a little too "handsy", trying to find penalty numbers on him.
