Vikings select...Colby Gossett, G, Appalachian St.

SemperFeist

Recommended Posts

SUMMARY: A four-year starter at Appalachian State, Gossett spent most of his career anchoring the right guard position, but also provided the coaching staff a versatile and durable option at tackle and center if needed – allowed only one combined sack the last two seasons. Gossett is an assignment sound player and uses his aggressive hands to tie up defenders. However, he is overly reliant on his upper body due to choppy steps and lower body stiffness that can be exposed by explosive interior defenders. Overall, Gossett doesn’t have a dominant trait and his skill-set leaves little room for error, but he finds ways to get the job done on tape and should provide immediate offensive line depth in the NFL.
GRADE: 5th-6th Round

Colby really started to resonate on NFL radars in 2016 when he held up pretty well in marquee games against Power Five foes Tennessee and Miami. During his time in Boone, Gossett has shown the ability to change positions on the line and still succeeded, as multiple times during his career he would change from guard to tackle.

Experience is going to be one of the main selling points on Colby and rightfully so as 46 straight starts speaks for itself. His body build with a broad waist, thick calfs and his ability to take on rushing defensive ends are positive signs for his potential in the NFL.

He had a strong Senior Bowl, which seems to be a trend with our picks this year.

I think he will be competing for the starting RG spot. The battle between Remmers, O'Neill, Hill, Isidora, Gossett and Compton for those two RG/RT spots will be fascinating.
