Worst Game Mechanics

I'd say this idea differentiates itself enough from the thread I originally got the idea.

I think we can all agree monetization of games (Lootboxes, microtransactions in 60$ games etc.) is probably the worst game mechanic but that's a whole other kettle of fish and probably not appropriate for this site so I won't touch on that.

Escort missions or fetch quests are the obvious ones but IMO the worst game mechanic is bad logic, obviously in video games you allow things to happen because game logic but far too often things cross a line that just make no sense or aren't explained at all just to move the plot along.

I honestly hate the RNG aspect of lootboxes the most. Nothing is more annoying than playing a game for an hour or so and get absolute crap. COD4 started a fairly cool trend of rewarding players for doing anything positive. It allowed players that aren't as good to find a spot they can still help the team and feel like they made progress. I remember trying to earn tags and skins and using all the guns to beat the challenges. Now I just play OW and hope that the 4 discs pop up gold, when 90% of the time you won't even get a purple.

90%?! Go buy yourself a lottery ticket.

QTEs, "Epic Battles" that pit about 6 guys on 6 guys when actually fought, Wars in open world games where very little "Waring" is actually going on, and swimming.

But the one mechanic I can't stand more than any is "Running Out Timers". I hate them all in any game, challenge, really anything. Let me fricken play the game the way I want! I don't want to skip through whole sections or have to quickly do something just because I will run out of time in 3 minutes.

What about in Halo CE when the ring is about to detonate? Sometimes it's called for IMO, but not always.

That was different as there were things actively happening around you as you race to the end. I'm talking like a Destiny 2 nightfall timer (No particular reason for it).

I can't stand games that don't have good checkpoints or save points. It was fine in the 90's, but I don't have the time or patience to replay long sections of games over and over again anymore. If I have to replay 10 minutes every time that I die I end up getting frustrated and that's about the end of the game for me. I feel like most adults also don't have the lifestyle anymore where they can just keep playing and playing until they reach a place to save.

I hate swimming. In every single game that exists.

Mario Odyssey as the cheep cheep is the best swim mechanics I've played and I still hated it. Swimming is the worst.

Escort missions are dumb as hell.

Any missions that require you to sneak around. Main example was when you infiltrate the Yiga Clan in Breath of the Wild. No matter how far you got in your sneaking, if you got caught you went all the way back to the beginning.

Forced stealth missions in non-stealth games are awful. I get it if you're playing MGS or Splinter Cell, but why do they always sneak into games like Zelda? That's not what people are playing for. It's like tossing a platforming section into the next Elder Scrolls.

Having a stealth option is great but I want the ability go to town on the baddies when I inevitably mess it up.

That was something I liked a lot about Dishonored, except for making you feel like a monster at the end if you did kill everyone.

The reason for a nightfall timer is because nightfall is a challenge mode and without a timer you can cheese boss fights pretty easily sometimes.
