The 53: Player, Roster, & Acquisitions Talk

everyone is trying to get rid of Jamie Collins

we've seen two preseason games of an all pro coming off surgery and people want to kick him out

Collins is a better player than Schobert if healthy and probably Kirksey and probably honestly Kendricks

I think Collins is probably still the 2nd best player on our defnese we'll be able to see that finally this year

The 53 -- ***UPDATED 8/21/18 -- 3rd Preseason Game Approaching, Cuts Looming, Practice Squad Forming****

---------------------------------------------------------

Final 5 Cut Decisions (Players 54-58):

1.) CB Simeon Thomas, CB Jeremiah McKinnon, or CB Denzel Rice: All three have made plays throughout camp, especially that of Mckinnon and Rice. Rice is a nickel while McKinnon and Thomas are primarily boundary CBs. With TJ Carrie and BBC serving at the nickel spot, Thomas or McKinnon may be more likely to get consideration for the 53. The only problem with that logic is that the Coaches have reportedly fallen in love with Denzel Rice as a competitive play-maker. I'd give the spot to McKinnon based on his college and pre-season film, but he is likely not a risk to be picked up by some other team as he is a UFA; therefore, Thomas may be likely to get the final CB spot over Mckinnon and Rice as he provides a different skill set and length that the rest of the room doesn't. If it were my choice and not Dorsey's, I'd cut Mike Jordan as I didn't like his play last year or in the pre-season thus far... in turn, I'd keep both Mckinnon and Thomas on the 53. I'd bet in reality it comes down to Rice or Thomas for the final spot and we retain Rice as he no longer has practice squad eligibility left while Thomas and Mckinnon do. We take our chances with Thomas, and he likely ends up on the PS as his pre-draft off-field issues likely scare teams away.

2.) LT Greg Robinson: As recently reported, Desmond Harrison has been bumped up to the 2nd team LT. If this positioning holds, the Browns may find it too risky given Harrison's longterm potential and immediate skill displayed to cut him and try to sneak him onto the practice squad. In this event, Robinson or Shon Coleman is the likely party cut. At this point, all signs point to Robinson being cut over Coleman as Robinson is more journeyman with uncertain impact & the Browns have seen what Shon Coleman can do at RT. It could go either way, but it's likely to lead to Robinson being cut. The only other alternative is to cut Harrison and hope he gets to the PS and keep Robinson on the 53.... the only issue with that is that I doubt the FO & Coaches see Robinson as a long-term solution at LT; therefore, it is not likely to happen. While Bitonio starting at LT makes it desirable to keep Robinson in the event that Joel has to go back to LG, the roster may be too deep at this point to keep 10 OLs... we'll likely just keep 9.

3.) WR Jeff Janis: I think Ratley is too special (he was one of my favorite players/sleepers to scout) with his deep ball, vertical threat and YAC ability to cut. He has been productive with 1st and 2nd team reps and has flashed his big play ability. Therefore, the cut comes down to Janis who hasn't ever produced more than 95 yards and 1 TD in a season or Rashard Higgins who is a young, hardworking possession receiver that cannot separate or pose a vertical threat, but can be a reliable 3rd down..middle of the field target. Janis is more special as a Special Teams Gunner and tackler, but Ratley has the speed but not the strength and durability to do so.  If I had to choose, I might choose to cut Higgins b/c I honestly think that despite him having a good camp.. he still would not be signed to the 53 of another team and we could retain him on the practice squad... he may elect to sign to another team's practice squad. However, he has earned a roster spot based on the body of work he has put in this off-season and Training Camp. While Janis brings a much needed veteran steady presence in the room as well as better Special Teams skill as a 5th or 6th WR that Higgins can't, I'm willing to bet that Higgins possession WR ability and youth is a skill set the Coaches and FO decide to go with

4.) RB Matt Dayes: With our depth and talent issues at other positions, we just can't afford the luxury of keeping a 4th RB. It's a shame b/c Dayes Is likely a viable number 2 or 3 RB on any roster in the league due to his pass catching ability and foot quickness. This cut will be one of the hardest in recent years from the perspective of letting potential winning talent leave the building. I doubt he makes it to the practice squad, but if he does he adds tremendous value as a 3rd RB that can be called up from the Practice Squad to fill in an impact role on the roster.

5.) FS Derron Smith: Without any Practice Squad eligibility left, if he's cut; he gone. He flashed in pre-season snaps and impressed the coaches last year. In any other year, he would be retained on the roster as the true FS2 while BBC plays Nickel CB1. The roster is just too talented or too needy at certain positions to keep Smith when we in effect have 3 starting safeties (Randall, Peppers, and Kindred) with two of them having experience at FS.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Projected Browns 53-man:

**** As talent falls off other rosters, I expect the bottom of our roster to look much different and the defensive and offensive number of players kept to more equalize. Until then, this is an exercise to give a picture of what our roster could look like based on the best talent that I see on the roster at this time.****

Positions to Watch On the Post-53 Waiver Wire:

1.) Center: Austin Reiter is one of the most overrated players on this team. He can't anchor, his flexibility and functional strength are terrible. He didn't even play all that well and was unchallenged in the game that this town thinks he was so amazing in. Anthony Fabiano is even worse. We need an upgrade. I could see us picking up a guy in the waiver wire after the final cuts, and that player being our backup center for the rest of the season. Not the best position to bring in with short prep for the season, but it's worth taking a shot.

2.) LT: No explanation needed

3.) CB: Our CB position group is one of the most overlooked weak parts of our roster. Hopefully a veteran cap casualty finds their way to the market and we can sign them.

4.) DT, 3-Tech

5.) TE

We're not cutting Greg Robinson. He's had a great camp.

Great is an overstatement... solid is more accurate as he's got whopped in practice by all reports but played better in games.

We aren't keeping 5 tackles... 1) Hubbard, 2.) Bitonio, 3.) Harrison (multiple reports are that he moved ahead of Robinson as the number 2 LT as well as from coaches)....

Who's number 4)??... it comes down to Shon Coleman, Greg Robinson, or a Tackle to be signed off waivers after the 53-man cut like Chiefs Tackle Parker Ehlinger

Greg Robinson is still very bad and doesn't play with the tenacity or power in the run game that Shon Coleman plays with.... I'd keep Coleman over Robinson in a second but still looked to upgrade over Coleman... but that's just my opinion....

Will be interesting to see how it shakes out...

@pnies20

IDK man... I watched the all22 this afternoon... he had 7 horrendous plays... whiffs... terrible pass sets... wrong directional steps... getting grabby...  everything was real bad... the TV copy 3 of these were evident in the TV copy... 4 were more readily apparent on the all22 on game pass.... his run game errors were worse than the pass pro errors...

He was average to solid in a few series at LT against 3rd string players in the games before this last one... he's really bad... Coleman is not good, but he is better... we need upgrades desperately... but I think Coleman can hold his own at RT...

I won't argue that we could upgrade but I think Robinson is showing signs of improvement. He'll do for now especially if he improves until we can get someone else in here.

Improvement from when?  Dude was a number two overall pick who was cut and signed after clearing waivers and then became a FA. Once in FA he signed a one year deal that included ZERO guaranteed money.

He’s been atrocious from day 1.

Coleman was a decent starting RT last season, not great, but passable.  Robinson has failed at T, and at G, and with now soon to be his 3rd team.

I would cut Smith and Orchard and move Avery to end. They are both budget and we could either improve the team with other dudes on the wire.

De's Garret, Og, Nassib, Avery.

Then we can keep either an extra db or lb, probably a db. Or even a player on offense.

Considering how much teams play 3 wide, we hardly need all the lbs we have  or we won't be able to utilise them how we want to.

I wouldn’t move Avery he has been like one of the better pass rushing 4-3 OLB during he pre season, I think we very well may cut Collins next season and he would be the heir to that spot

Yeah, there’s no need to move him, he can easily stick his hand in the dirt on passing downs in sub packages and still play Lb.

Kid looks like a find thus far.
