The 53: Player, Roster, & Acquisitions Talk

There is no practice squad yet.

That is only for when the roster is cut down to 53 and the league allows an additional group of 10 or so guys to be a part of the roster.

Cutting Rod Johnson right now means we don't even think he's one of the best 89-90 players on the team (that's how many people we have on the squad right now)

I have always been vocal that the Rod Johnson pick made no sense, he had some of the worst contact balance/feet/core strength I had ever seen on film for a multiple year starter. I thought he should've gone undrafted, and I always knew he would be cut sooner rather than later.

As bad as Greg Robinson has been, he's not worse than Rod Johnson, but the plus is that Robinson can play inside.

Love the move.

Rod Johnson was a reflection of terrible scouting. Trading up to take a player in the 5th round that should've went undrafted.

The First 53 Projection

**** As talent falls off other rosters, I expect the bottom of our roster to look much different and the defensive and offensive number of players kept to more equalize. So after 1 year:

Myles Garrett

Jabrill Peppers

David Njoku

Deshone Kizer - Bust

Larry Ogunjobi

Howard Wilson - Injury bust

Roderick Johnson - Bust

Caleb Brantley

Zane Gonzalez

Matt Dayes - Might be gone due to depth at RB

Are we really going to call Johnson a bust tho? He was a 5th rd pick.

He isn't on the team.

I’m not calling a 5th rd pick that didn’t last long a bust because that’s pretty normal for the draft position. Finding a legit long term player in the 5th or later is pretty rare/uncommon

Not to mention, he wasn’t cut because of his play as he was hurt all last year.

Johnson was cut because the previous regime drafted him, not the current one, plain and simple.

This still looks pretty good to me.

Garrett, Ogunjobi, Njoku, Brantley all look like contributors and already good players

Peppers, Gonzalez, will be significant contributors and have a big year 2 to show that they are good players.

Wilson, injuries might push him off the team, but he was worth the risk with the amount of picks we had.

All in all, it looks like only 2/9 are legitimate busts and not going to ever contribute moving forward.

By end of year we should be sitting at 5-6/9 as good, contributing players.

I like everything except our tackles and kicker. Hubbard was nice as a backup and rotational Olmen but we’ve never seen him as a full time starter. And I just don’t trust Coleman. I didn’t like him last year when joe went down. But I guess it’s good to have a qb with wheels.

And zane was terrible. Rookie or not he looked shook. I’d hate to have to rely on him if we had a playoff team.

75% in his first year, didnt miss one in the last 5 weeks
phil dawson in his first year: 66.7
adam vinatieri in his first year: 77.1
janikowski in his first year 68.8

not saying he's gonna be great, or even our kicker this year, or htat he shouldn't have competition, but his career is not lost.  esp for a 7th rder.

Zane Gonzales was one of the best College Kickers I've seen in recent memory.....

Great post.

It was one season, folks need to give these guys time.

Good sir, this is Cleveland. We don't believe in giving rookies time, regardless of what position they play.
