Day 3 Draft Picks

Joe Banner, the former President of the Eagles and the Browns recently was interviewed and talked about a study the Eagles did about day 3 picks and they found that successful day 3 picks come from 3 categories,

1. Small School and not a lot of attention
2. Injured in their final year and under the radar
3. Undersized, but somehow overcome it

It does seem that Pace has followed this to a degree

2018

4. Small School Mutant
5. Small School Mutant
6. Injured

2017

4. Injured
4. Small School and Undersized
5. Small School

2016

4. Small School
6. Small School
7. Small School and Undersized

It makes sense. His point about if a guy plays at Ohio St and has great size, speed, and athletic ability then why is he not better and getting drafted higher?

I've thought for a long time the 5th and later were rounds you either took a guy who filled a very defined role (2-gapping ogre with zero passrush, returner, special teamers, very physically limited game managing QBs, etc) or a physical freak who was raw or had some wart (size, production, legal woes, etc).

I'm happy with the approach that is being taken here.

Bhilal Nichols and Iggy both look like NFL players, which gives me hope that they will be contributors.

Nichols looks like a grown man.

Is there anything noteworthy about our UDFA crop? I haven't had time to do any research on those guys...

Seems to me to be a good general philosophy to have. The defensive guys in 4, 5, and 6 this year are super intriguing. If they all work out, it will be an enormous boost. I'm super excited by Fitts.

I think watching Fitts when he was healthy back in 2015 I would have taken him way before the likes of Kemoko Turay, Lorenzo Carter or Sam Hubbard...he looks to have everything you look for from a HWS perspective as well as a variety of moves and an instinct for getting to the ball whither that be sacking the QB of knocking the pass down...very interesting to hear the area scout say he might be an even better base edge due to his run stopping ability rather than a pass rushing specialist early on...keep him healthy and he could be a massive pick up for us...

The more I read and look into Iggy, Nichols & Fitts the more I love what Pace did late on in this draft.

Kevin Toliver was a 5-Star recruit to LSU who has all the measurables and tools but didn’t quite put it together there. He’s the most intriguing to me. With that, it’s nice after a long while looking at our roster and not thinking we NEED to hit on a UDFA or two. I’d say, prior to any TC or PS injuries of course, that it’s less likely than not that a 2018 UDFA is on our week 1 roster. Been a while since the last time I felt comfortable saying that.

Toliver’s issue is his attitude and Nagy has apparently made it clear that it’s 1 strike and you’re out. Also, Dejon Allen could be a keeper.

I hope it is so. We had Lovie who was beloved by his players but gave way too many chances to his guys, Trestman likely had as much estrogen as his daughters, Fox didn't have a pair of balls, so we need a coach who can make hard lines and then commit to his choices. Toliver has a chance to work in with Donatell, who is an elite DB coach, if he screws it up here he is going to have to look at a job outside of the NFL.

You're probably right. Maybe we'll have a better practice squad, though.

Do you know why so many think he's destined for guard? I didn't come across all his measurements (as he wasn't at the combine), but is it because of the dreaded hands/short arms nonsense? Dude is fast...

No clue. Over the fall I usually watch a lot of west coast college football because I’m a USC fan so I caught a few Hawaii games, 2-3 maybe. Allen always stood out.

Makes sense.  Recruiting is several times more inexact than drafting.  There are guys who don't even get a chance to play college football that could have gone to NFL.  Many more that could have played college football

Biggest problem NFL has is few high schools or colleges are teaching QB play the way they play it or looking for same qualities.

Most guys the NFL wants or would want are playing baseball, basketball or college 3rd string TE or simply dont get recruited becuase their high school program sucked or ran double wing or something and colach didnt want a 6-5 string armed smart guy.  HS coach made him guard, LB, TE or DE.

Colleges dont want that guy, becuase he cant take a broken play 60 yards with his legs amd run the staple zone read.

Ben Rothelsbergers, Troy Aikman's and Tom Brady's of world rarely get recruited or even start for most high schools at QB anymore. Drew Brees' of world can because they are quick and fast.
