Eh... Vegas is OK if you don't make gambling your focus. There are a few places there that are fantastic, actually.

Isn't Vegas still expensive tho?  Like it's cheap for flight, but to actually do the activities in Vegas...it costs dollar money.  And Vegas is ugly as heck because it's a literal desert.

Recommendations on places to stay in Vegas? What’s the best bang for my buck?

Bang for your buck is going to be Luxor or Excalibur on the strip IMO. If you want to stay further north, Circus Circus and the Stratosphere are cheap, but the area sucks and getting to cool resorts in the center of the strip is hard. I don't need luxury accommodations in Vegas as I'm never in my room except to crash for a few hours. Do be mindful that every resort will charge you about ~$40 a day in a resort fee plus taxes. When are you going? The pools are all closed for the next 6ish months, so don't factor that into picking a resort.

No open container laws, so go and buy a bottle and make your own drinks to carry around. The benefit of resorts like Excalibur and Luxor is that they'll also have lower stakes tables compared to other casions on the strip. Beware though, the odds at a $5 dollar table are worse than at a $25 dollar table and mathematically your loses will be greater, but it's a good way to not lose the shirt off your back and get free drinks. If you really want to gamble and try and make money, go to old Vegas. I recommend the El Cortez for their $5 double and single deck tables that still pay 3/2, allow double after splitting and surrenders.

The best/cheapest entertainment in Vegas is literally just walking around and people watching. Food, drinks, entertainment on the Strip are super expensive and add up really quick, but walking around mega resorts and getting hammered is a great time. Also sitting in the sports book.

Look into stuff that you can do outside of the strip as it is considerably cheaper. I really liked going into the desert and driving dune bugy's. No it isn't cheap, but in the long run it was cheaper than staying at the hotel and gambling.

Just spent the weekend in Vegas,

Just a really, really depressing place TBH.

I feel this way about casinos in general. A bunch of middle aged and old people sitting at slot machines throwing away their money and chain smoking. It’s just sad. The fact that Vegas has a fun reputation is great marketing. Only reason I’d go is to make the trip to the Grand Canyon

Harrah's, Linq, Flamingo are my suggestions. You don't need a fancy room as you'll never be in there except to sleep. I've stayed at Harrah's every time and it's legit. Right on the strip and close to everything. Staying at Excalibur for the draft next year. Never been on that side of the strip but I'm sure it's more of the same..... awesomeness!!

Vegas can be expensive but it doesn't have to be! You can find cheaper food options and it's easy to drink for free so no need to pay for much booze if that's your thing.

Enjoy!!

There are plenty more things to do in Vegas (and in casinos) than sit at slot machines and smoke cigs...........

Lame story but I'm gonna tell it anyway.

So at an event my fiancée registered to win one of those free vacation type deals. It turns out it was (unsurprisingly) for a timeshare. Now, timeshares aren't a bad thing, they've done great in my life (I've been to Hawaii 3 times because of it). So we had to go and sit through this presentation and knowing damn well we aren't buying anything because we don't have the money to anyway. In fact we told the sales agents that right at the beginning, they are persistent though, I'll say that.

Long story short, we sat through 2 hours or so of back and forth from salespeople and we legitimately get a 7 day trip, confirmed, its actually on the level.

Just spent the weekend in Austin, Texas. Unexpectedly amazing city. Quite possibly the most hipster area I have ever been to (in a good way). Very expensive cost of living, but could definitely see myself living down there at some point.

Houston/Sugar Land will always be home for me, but Austin is perhaps the one city I'd consider moving to.

@Matts4313 lives out there.

If you don’t need to be on the strip, look into one of the timeshare places on the hotel sites. I’ve stayed in one a few times, and they’re really nice. They’ve all been a 1 bedroom condo, with a full kitchen, and a jet tub. They’re all a couple miles from the strip though.

Areas around the strip are sketchy as all hell. Not sure how much Ubers would be out there either but the cost of getting to and from may cause you to break even after it's all said and done. I mean, I stay at Harrah's for $70/night, all taxes and fees included. Are they really that much different in price off the strip?
