With a new coordinator and new quarterback, the Minnesota Vikings offense was expected to face a tough challenge against the NFL’s No. 1 defense from 2017. But Saturday night’s practice in front of about 6,000 fans at TCO Stadium left a lot to be desired from the offense.

“It’s a work in progress. It really always will be. I was really pleased with one of the final periods of ‘move the ball’ we call it – of just playing unscripted football and just reacting to the system,” QB Kirk Cousins said.

Stefon Diggs and Xavier Rhodes missed practice Wednesday. It was not injury related.

“They did not make me happy,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said, via Andrew Krammer of the Star Tribune.

Zimmer did not elaborate, but Rhodes and Diggs were jawing with each other at the walk-through Wednesday morning. According to Krammer, Rhodes and Diggs engaged in “heated chatter” during Tuesday’s practice. Rhodes intercepted a throw intended for Adam Thielen, and Diggs caught a couple of passes over the middle against Rhodes with the two players “chirping at one another.”

After Diggs caught a long touchdown pass, he threw the ball into the stands. Rhodes refused to leave the field, staying at corner with the third-team defense.

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs and cornerback Xavier Rhodes were on the same page Thursday after being held out of Wednesday afternoon’s practice by head coach Mike Zimmer.

Zimmer said the pair “did not make me happy” by getting into it with one another during a walkthrough on Wednesday morning and called their behavior “juvenile” on Thursday. Zimmer added that “everything is good” now and both players echoed that when they spoke to the media.

Diggs called it a “family thing” that’s now in the past and Rhodes used a similar analogy to explain what happened between the players.

“It was just the competitive nature in us,” Rhodes said, via the Pioneer Press. “I didn’t want to lose. He didn’t want to lose. … It’s stuff like that if you have a sibling you grow up with and he does something you don’t like and then something tends to go off.”

Defensive end Everson Griffen was not present for a second straight day of practice Tuesday, but Zimmer declined to say why.

“I’m not going to talk about injuries but he is not very far away,’’ Zimmer said. “He’ll be back here soon.’’
