2018 Expansion Draft - Vikings

Recommended Posts

Imagine a new team is being ushered into the league. Every team has to pick 5 players from its roster. Designated players will be pooled (32 teams, 5 players each for a total of 160 players) and be made available to the new team via the Expansion Draft. From the total pool (and current list of Free Agents), the new franchise will pick (or “draft”) a full 53-player roster for the 2018-19 season.

Typically, teams offer up players they’re actively looking to get rid of (declining performance, age, salary).

Designation Rules:

No kickers and punters.

No players set to become free agents.

No players who just spent an entire year on injured reserve.

Only one player with 10 or more years of experience.

That being said... What 5 players would you offer up for the 2018-19 season? Why?

Just want to clarify, we would be at risk of losing these players for this season? Or the expansion team would hypothetically be starting next year (2019-20)

Well that makes little sense given that rosters have largely already been constructed for the coming season and the expansion team didn’t get to draft any rookies, but, if they can’t be a free agent for the 2019 season it would probably look like this from the Vikings (assuming the bottom of the barrel roster guys don’t count into this little game)

LB - Kentrell Brothers - passed up on the LB depth chart and suspended for the first four games of the season

WR - Laquon Treadwell - showing promise this offseason, but hasn’t lived up to his draft hype. Kendall Wright/Stacy Coley among others could likely take the #3 WR role

CB - Mackensie Alexander - just drafted Mike Hughes and the Vikings are deep at corner. If it was for the 2019-20 season, this could be Trae Waynes instead. We would still have Rhodes, Waynes, Hughes, and Newman.

DE - Stephen Weatherly - looks to have been surpassed by Tashawn Bower, and we just drafted Ade Aruna

QB - Kyle Sloter - traded for Siemien to be the backup, and though the Vikings like his promise, the likelihood that he even becomes what Siemien is now is small.

———

the Vikings wouldn’t expose any guys that would likely be counted on to contribute this season being that they were one game away from the super bowl last year. If this was for 2019-20 you could see players like Sendejo and Remmers on this list instead to shed their cap and make room for players like Brian O’Neill and Colby Gossett/Danny Isidora

Yes. Sorry for the vague-ish rules. Copy pasta from a website I saw.
