Oh, I hope this sets the bar for Jadevion Clowney. I get he wants big/highest pain kind of money, but this is an ideal raise for him.

I wouldn't get your hopes up.  Hunter's contract is significantly below market value for his age and position.  If he extends I'd bet that Clowney is closer to 17 million a year than the 14 1/2 that Hunter just signed.  I don't think he's any better of a player, I just don't believe JC is going to leave that much on the table.

Hunter's deal is crazy IMO.  it doesn't even put him among the 10 highest paid edge rushers in the league and not even the highest paid DE on his own team.

Clowney will get $20m per. I will be shocked if he's not above $18m aav

Which frustrates me to no end, mind you. Clowney is still a considerable risk...

Yeah, I'm also thinking as much. The money is there, but goodness - really worried about that contract.

Clowney is going to get way more than Hunter.  Spotrac lists his market value as $16.6M per year...and I'd expect that he'll get higher, probably somewhere in the neighborhood of $17.5M-$18M.  I can't see him getting $20M per.

Stupid, stupid move.  I'm a Vikings fan and I hate this contract.  Let me see if I can get this straight: we took someone who wasn't an integral part of our defense, whose speciality (and only main redeemable quality) is rushing the passer and yet he bombed when given the chance to start and got only 7 sacks in a year he was being overhyped, and we paid him more annually than we pay to Linval Joseph who holds down the entire middle of the line.  Im just dumbfounded right now

This would have made sense if they gave it to him after his 12.5 sack season without a start.  But now that they see that he's not the next star in the making, but rather a very replaceable cog in a defense full of stars, they shouldn't be rushing to pay him.  There is absolutely nothing he did last season that is worth $15 million a season, much less $40 million guaranteed.  I think they definitely panicked on this one, and it will cost us

Good job Spielman!

Barr or Diggs have to be next. Smart money puts our SLB as the priority pay but Diggs has top 10 WR potential I think.

I would go with Diggs over Barr

Clowney will get more, Hunter was making "peanuts" since he was a late 3rd rounder.

If I remember correctly O_0 was the target and once NYG drafted him, Minny traded down twice, and land Hunter for DE.

Great deal. Gonna explode next to Richardson this year.

Terrible take.

Hunter is excellent against the run, he's not a pass rush specialist.

He had 61 pressures last year, same as Griffen.

He has 25 career sacks, and hasn't turned 24 yet. He's one of the best young edge players in the league, absolutely a star in the making. Go look up Jared Allen's stats in his first 3 years to compare.

He's not a "replaceable cog". The Vikings other DEs are Griffen, who's very good but turns 31 this year, Robison who's washed up and a bunch of late round / UDFA projects like Weatherly and Bower. If Hunter had moved on next year they'd have had next to nothing at the position beyond an aging Griffen.

There's hardly a team in the league that wouldn't have jumped at the chance to sign Hunter to this deal.

Am Packers, can we sign Hunter to this deal?

Agree. Horrible take.

Sure, he didn't have the sexy sack stats last year compared to 2016 but he was tasked with stopping the run (which he does well) and containing the QB in the pocket for Griffen to put pressure on (which he did until he got hampered with injuries.)

It's a great deal especially if he turns into the superstar he can be.

would have rather they extend Barr. Not sure how they get that done. Gonna be 6 defenders with $10m+ in 2021 I think

Vikings defense long-term contracts by AAV (last year of current deal, age that year):

  • Griffen $14.5M (2022, 35)
  • Hunter $14.4M (2023, 29)
  • Rhodes $14M (2022, 32)
  • Joseph $12.5M (2022, 34)
  • Smith $10.25M (2021, 32)
  • Kendricks $10M (2023, 31)
