What if NBA players came to NFL?

Recommended Posts

We've seen subpar basketball players like Antonio Gates, Jimmy Graham, and Tony Gonzalez come into the NFL and dominate it.  I'm sure there are quite a number of NBA players that could do the same.

Basketball has the best athletes in the world IMO.  They can do everything NFL or soccer players can do from a purely athletic standpoint.  They're just able to do it at a much taller height.

There's always an exception to the rule, but 95% of NBA players are just too lanky. Heck being any taller than 6'6ish is bad for NFL players.

Here's an NFL player that was a also a Basketball player in College. Cincinnati, Connor Barwin.

Julius Peppers - at North Carolina, no less.

I’d go with LeBron at QB. High IQ player. There’s a zero point zero percent chance he can’t throw tf out of a football. Probably be Cam Newton in the run game

Antonio Gates wasn't a subpar basketball player. And the reason why guys like Gates, Gonzalez, Graham, etc. worked in the NFL is because their body types weren't great fits for basketball despite their athleticism. Ideal basketball body types aren't good fits for football for the most part. There are certainly some guys who could have played in the NFL if they dedicated their lives to football, but many of them are tailor made for the NBA.

Oh, Ben Wallace would have been a hell of a DE if he wanted to be. Thought about him at TE, but I can't imagine him being able to catch a pass.

Despite his rebounding ability?

That's the biggest thing about these guys. They have no incentive to lift heavy on their legs. They aren't having to generate jarring power in basketball and therefore don't attempt to pack mass on their frames...for the most part. I'm sure had they decided to get into football, in due time, those guys would be monsters.

Yeah maybe he would have great hands...but he was so unskilled as an offensive player it was comical. I guess catching a pass is a different thing than basketball coordination (dribbling, shooting, passing...), but I want to believe he'd be a stud defensively like he was in the NBA.

Some would be. Some would not be. The guys best suited for the NFL will be the smaller guards, small forwards, and the undersized big men. The real big men are too tall, and many don't have the movement skills. The large point guards and shooting guards generally don't have the body types to play the skill positions in the NFL. They're too tall and lanky. The small forwards are generally more muscular in build, which would allow them to play TE or OLB. The undersized big men are the tackles, tight ends, and DLs.(by undersized, I mean shortish) The smaller guards are obviously well suited for CB and WR. The really small guards might be able to play HB.

Zion Williamson would be an elite DE had his passion/development been football from the beginning.  270 lbs...

Prime Dwyane Wade would have been a fun, highlightmaking defensive player. Or Maybe a crazy coordinated WR.

I could see him continuing to play QB in D1 and have a Tony Rice type impact. Any shot at the next level was doubtful bcuz of his size and frame. But man he could’ve been a Devin Hester-like return specialist.
