Well, TBF there

All valid points, but it's about potential.  Malone has a ton of potential, but the coaches like meh veterans who do as they are told.  It's not just about Malone though.  I'd rather keep Auden Tate than LaFell as well, but that probably won't be the case...

Me too, and you're probably right there.

I'm convinced Lafell's spot is safe. He is too well liked in the locker room, a la Michael Johnson. I honestly would keep Auden Tate over a guy like CJ Uzomah. Especially if they keep Hewitt, no need to keep 4 TEs on the roster.

No reason except you know you'll be playing with Hewitt and Kroft 90% of the year.  And Hewitt hasn't really played TE in a long time.  Maybe since college.

I think Uzomah stays just because of Eifert's injury history and because Hewitt is not really a true TE.

Excellent write up.  These are the type of in depth things I write in my head while chewing up miles trying to return to running, but I'm too lazy to actually sit down and type it out.

I know that the site wants more topic posts, but our subforum seems to respond best by keeping things in one place, so I'll keep it here.  Not trying to hijack yours.

Offense: 24  More talented depth on the defensive side, plus versatile players to fill gaps

QB (2)-  Dalton is a lock.  I hope it is an open competiton for the backup spot and I want Woodside to win it, but Driskel or Barkley will.  Deep down, I feel like Woodside ends up in court appointed classes afetr his recent DUI and starts on PUP.  Similar to McCarron.

After thinking this one over a bit, I have to say that the backup spot is up for grabs. While at first I say Barkley is a lock, he's probably not a guarantee, so I could see Driskel or Woodside getting it as well. It will probably come down to who makes the least amount of mistakes.

RB (r4):  I think they go four, with Mixon, Bernard and Walton locks, and Hill not far behind. Flowers to the PS

Hill and Flowers probably have the best chance to get the 4th RB spot, but I could also see them only keeping 3 guys here simply due to the fact that Mixon and Bernard will eat up all the snaps. Even if one of them is injured, Walton is there too. Hill and Flowers will both have to show something on special teams if they really want to make a case here.

TE (3):  My first shocker is we only go three, including a h-back.  So both Tylers are locks, and if the team wants a FB, Hewitt makes it.  If not, CJ Uzomah makes it.  More on why in the WR department.

My first big disagreement with you, no chance they just keep 2 true TE's on the team. Eifert cannot be trusted at this point to stay healthy, so they need to keep at least 2 other guys that can. Hewitt is pretty much considered in this category as well, but he's going to be safe just like Uzomah.

WR(6):  Green, Ross, Boyd are total locks.  Malone is right there.  LaFell has to show he still offers more than the youngsters, and he sticks as long as he does.  if they all surpass him, then his time here is done.  I think Tate makes it for his size and catch radius, which in essence, means he's playing what Uzomah does, without any blocking.  Erickson is the guy who muddies things.  I think we have about five more explosive guys that him (Phillips, Walton, Bates, Wilson, and Ross in the old Adam Jones role of taking them when we absolutely need a huge return).  But I also think he's decent in the slot.  If noone beats him out as a returner, he obviously sticks.  But after all those fumbles last year (we recovered all but one, I think), anyone with more explosion should be able to overtake him.  We might even have a few guys listed as PR or KR specifically, negating the need to keep Erickson as both,  In the end, I think we trade either LaFell or Erickson for a late pick and we keep 6.

Interesting concept to moving Tate at a TE role, but how good is his blocking? Yes you claim use him without the blocking, but TE's have to block from time to time. Erickson is very expendable every since they drafted Phillips, as well as the team wanting to give a shot to Brandon Wilson. Don't really see Walton, Bates or Ross getting any return action because they will have bigger roles to focus one. Lafell I don't think gets traded, and I can't see a team willing to trade a draft pick for Erickson who has no upside. Also don't count out Cody Core yet.

OT (4):  Glenn is a lock.  Fisher should be.  Ogbuehi, Hart and Perkins for the last two spots.

Ogbuehi is still safe IMO merely because the Bengals will want every opportunity to salvage him. Agreed that Hart and Perkins fight for the last spot

OG (4) Boling is a lock.  Westerman probably is.  If Hopkins loses out on the RG battle, he backs up both center and OG, so we bid adieu to TJ Johnson.  Last spot probably goes to Redmond.

Agree with everything here, but I think Redmond is probably more safe than we realise

C (1):  Price is a lock.  Hopkins or TJ JOhnson is the backup.  I'm all in on Hopkins, even if he starts at RG, because I think he's far better than Johnson, who was equally as horrid as many ther of our linemen last year (Cedric, Fisher, Bodine, Hopkins, Hart with the NYG)

Once again agree with everything

Defense: 26  you keep more talented players, regardless of positions, for the last few spots.

DE (4):  Dunlap, Willis, Lawson and Hubbard are locks.  They may call Lawson a LB, but all that does is shuffle the number they keep at each position.  He's rushing the passer.  I call that an End.

Thinking it over some more, yeah it seems like Lawson should just stay where's he's at.

Hybrid DE/DT (1)  Johnson   He may be declining, but he still is a leader on and off of the field.

Now thinking about it more, Johnson could still be cut simply due to having too much young talent at the DE position.

DT (4):  Personally I think Atkins and Billings are locks.  If Baker returns to his Redskins form, he is too.  If he doesn't, he goes, and it gets down to Brown vs. Glascow.  I've said enough in the past about UVA playing Brown out of position, and if left to be a 3T he will shine (see Senior Bowl tape, especially drills).  To me, Glascow is a lunchpail type of guy, but nothing special.  If Baker shines, he beats out Glascow, who ends up injured, on the PS, or claimed after cuts by another team.  Topou to the practice squad

My biggest disagreement with you is here. Billings didn't play good last year and while it was like a rookie year for him, but with some of the other guys here, he could be cut. Baker probably won't be cut regardless, because he will probably start next to Atkins. Brown was a great value pick in the 5th round so he's probably going to make it, but I merely had to mention him as not a guarantee. No chance at all Glasgow gets cut for the same reason I said to villain about Malone, he is a 4th rounder from last year. Glasgow maybe just a depth player, but he was a great depth player last year earning high remarks from PFF, so if he gets cut someone will definitely pick him up. Ultimately I think all 5 guys make it.

LB (6):  The locks are Burfict (after week 4), Brown, Jefferson, Vigil, Rey and probably Evans.  Worley battles Nickerspn and eventually Bell (who's on NFI right now) for the spot that eventually becomes Burfict's.  If Worley or Nickerson show enough, they might opt to keep the winner long term over Rey, who is on the last year of his deal.

Nickerson is going to be the only LB with a good chance to make the roster while Burfict isn't on the roster. I don't give Worley much of a chance to make the roster due to the other guys on the team, but he will have a good chance to make the practice squad. Same for Bell

CB (6)  Locks are obviously Jackson, WhoDre and Dennard.  I hope Phillips flashes on returns, so there is four.  Harris is a new drfat pick, and the team rarely cuts them.  He probably is inactive on gamedays, I I don't care what position they play if they are inactive.  You keep the best talent.  The last spot gets down to Russell's potential vs. Shaw's versatility.  At the moment, I keep Shaw, but the loser here might net a 6th round pick next year.

I actually agree with this surprisingly but I will go one step further and say all 7 guys you mentioned somehow make the team.

Safety (5):  The top three are Iloka, Williams and Bates.  Feg contributes on coverage teams, Wilson offers the versatility to return kicks, play CB and safety, and even RB in a pinch.  The 7th WR spot from last year just became a DB this year.  Wilson could also displace Shaw and open up another spot somewhere else on the roster.

Wilson and Shaw could very well compete for the last DB spot when it's all said and done.

Specialists:

P: Huber

K: Bullock

LS  Harris

Practice Squad

Woodside  QB

Rod Taylor OG

Brad Lundblade OC

Flowers RB/Slot WR/QB/Returner

Kermit Whitfield WR

Topou DT

Ja’von Rolland Jones  DE

Nickerson/Worley loser  LB

Brandon Bell  LB

??????

International exemption  Miritz Boeringer

With extra DBs on the roster, they can go for other positions on the practice squad

Yeah but there's a big difference between cutting a 4th round pick versus a 5th round. You can look at other teams, its not that uncommon for teams to cut a rookie 5th round pick, but its rare for them to cut a 4th round pick after one year in the league.

Yeah but because Eifert cant stay healthy, and Hewitt not being an actual TE, they have to keep some more TE's on the team.

A week into training camp and Ross/Malone have been impressive.  I'm starting to think Lafell is in jeopardy.

Obviously the preseason games change that.  But if Ross makes one/two big time plays, and Malone puts up some good numbers, Lafell could be in trouble.

Ha.  My six.  I didn't see LaFell getting released this early, but it is the best chance for him to latch on elsewhere.  I'm pretty sure that breeze I just felt was Erickson exhaling after learning of the news.

Locks (4) Carlos Dunlap, Jordan Willis, Carl Lawson, Michael Johnson, Sam Hubbard

Locks (2) Geno Atkins, Ryan Glasgow

Bubble Watch (3) Chris Baker, Andrew Billings, Andrew Brown

As we're seeing the roster shape up, it's looking like Baker and Billings are locks.  I added Lawson to the DE list, since that's how they list him now.

Andrew Brown is still a bubble guy, but with Hubbard looking good at DE and the 3Tech, the rumors are starting to fly that MJ90 may be on his way out.  Here's why:

  • MJ90 stayed around last year because of his resurgance being able to play inside on passing downs.  If Hubbard can do that, (and maybe do it better?) keeping MJ90 plants Hubbard on the bench for most passing downs.
  • Lawson and Dunlap are still the rush ends
  • If everything above plays out, then you're only keeping MJ90 for running downs.
  • If everything above plays out, then when does Willis rotate in?  Are you really keep two ends (willis and MJ90), to rotate in on running downs?

I don't see the team carrying him on the roster if they don't intend for him to start.  They can justify it with Hubbard because he'll play ST's.  But for Willis to start, MJ90 will be on reduced snaps and has to play ST's.  I don't see that happening.
