Forbath vs. Carlson

The Vikings held the first kicking competition of training camp between veteran Kai Forbath and rookie Daniel Carlson. Neither missed a kick, with Forbath going 5 for 5 and Carlson 4 for 4.  Forbath figures the battle could go down to the wire.

Forbath: “It always does. At least in my situation it’s never been a decision after a few weeks. It’s a small community of specialists, so I want the best for Daniel. That said, obviously we’re competing for a job. He’s got a bright future ahead of him, and I’m going to help him become the best kicker he can be while also focusing on myself at the same time.”

The Vikings have two kickers battling for one spot. Veteran Kai Forbath and Daniel Carlson have made it a friendly competition. The two exchanged fives between alternate field goal attempts at Friday’s practice. Carlson was good from 33, 39 and 50, but he was wide right from 46. Forbath was good from 33, 46 and 50, but he was wide right from 39.

From what I've read on Twitter, Carlson seems to have been doing better than Forbath. I can't substantiate that though.

If the rookie were to lose the battle to Forbath, it'd be unfortunate because it means he was a wasted draft pick for us, but at the same time, it also means that we are putting the best possible player on our roster. I trust Zimmer and Spielman to pick the right guy through this process.

Carlson:  “This offseason I hit 75 over at the Air Force Academy. That elevation gives you a couple extra yards, for sure, but we’ll see. Obviously that’s not a game-situation kick with a live snap and a rush and everything, but we’ll see.”

Zimmer:  “We kind of knew he had a big leg — a big, strong guy that can kick the ball a long ways. I mean, that was part of the reason why we drafted him.”

At 6-foot-5, and taller than the majority of kickers, Carlson was asked by a writer if he has spent much time studying the physics of his position. Carlson acknowledged that there are pros and cons to being lengthy and long-legged.

Carlson: “I’ve got longer levers so I get a little more torque and a little more velocity on the ball. But obviously you’ve got to also work on controlling that, so you’ve got to work on the accuracy a little more, I think, than some other shorter guys who have an easier time kind of controlling their shorter levers than I do.

Remember, there's only one cutdown day now. Obviously, they could still let him go before that, but there's also no hurry.

No hurry, but if they decide to add a veteran O-lineman, Kai’s roster spot is the one I’d use to make room.

Can Carlson make a freaking extra point, if so give me him over Forbath.  The only reason the Vikings drafted a kicker is because Forbath missed a league high 5 extra points last year.  Honestly 5?  Sure he made some nice longer field goals during the year but they just got rid of Walsh who also missed extra points, now he does it as well.

Carlson has a good enough leg I feel from what he did at Auburn, if he can make more extra points than Forbath give it to him.  Would be shocked if they cut Carlson because then why draft him in the 5th round.

At this point, the draft pick invested is a sunk cost. If Forbath kicks better, you keep Forbath, but if Carlson kicks better or the same you keep Carlson.

I too would be shocked if they cut Carlson as this team has sometimes shown that they hold on to draft picks a bit too long.

They would likely bring in another leg just for practices so cutting Kai just means using a roster spot on some other kicker that would be less useful if something goes poorly with the rookie. I don't see cutting Forbath before the deadline to be beneficial unless he is tanking his career by being an annoyance to the team? There is nothing recently that suggests he is behaving unprofessionally. That draft day tweet was a fleeting emotion that I can easily excuse.

Its only a sunk cost if you don’t expect him to be better than Forbath in the future. Draft picks arent made just for the upcoming season.

If you’re going to keep Forbath, or simply cut Carlson, then you don’t expect Carlson to be better than the other kicker for this year and beyond.

With kicking, there isn’t as much development as other positions. Guys either can or they can’t. Maybe you can project out his leg strength a little ways, but if the guy can’t kick it through the uprights (Carlson showing that he very much can) that’s likely not going to change.
