oakdb36 Posted September 2, 2018 Share Posted September 2, 2018 Those older players took the roster spots of all the terrible early draft picks from the 2015 to 17 draft. It's quite possible we wouldn't have traded him if we had drafted good after 2014. The surrounding players to build a defense around Mack would be on the roster already and on cheap rookie contracts. But they're not there. In order to bring them in you need draft picks or cap room. With a Mack extension you kiss goodbye to the cap room for the upcoming years so you're left with draft picks and basically a whole D to build. Through the draft, it would take 3 years of good drafting on D (and you can't draft D only) to surround Mack with a competent unit. At this point Mack is 30. Acting like we traded for a proven trash can like Osweiler. Was the price a little steep? Maybe. But it’s an important position, just ask the eagles. All raiders had to do was wait 2 or 3 hours and signed him without giving up the pick. He is making moves to be competitive this year and making moves to rebuild.
