n8ghee
Oren Burks is going to be thrust into a huge role early on in his career thanks to the injury Jake Ryan suffered. Will he be Just Another Guy, or will he be a difference maker? He was a S/LB hybrid at Vanderbilt similar to another guy who played for the University of New Mexico as a S/LB hybrid. He also tested very similar to this certain someone at the combine...
AlexGreen#20
Well so long as we're keeping our expectations reasonable. He's a kid, he's gonna get his *** kicked more often than not this year.
wgbeethree
He might end up being just another guy but he'll be nothing like Ryan.
Scoremore
Wow love the optimism around here. Let's at least see how he does when the pads go on. He could develop into an all pro for all you guys know. He's a rook and he'll need time but it's a little early to label him don't you think? ReadyToThump
He's not a similar player to Ryan at all but I think he'll be fine considering the hogs he'll have playing in front of him.
Gopackgonerd
I think if our DLine keeps him clean he'll make some plays. Need to see in the preseason when he goes up against blocks if he can shed them.
Tied2thetracks
Maybe a JAG this year but long term I like the odds of him being a solid player.

The chances of being a difference maker this year are small, him being a rookie, after this year, who knows ?
n8ghee
Well it sounds like there is a reserved group of people with some decent expectations for the kid. im excited to watch him in the coming weeks.
Shanedorf
Oren Burks was drafted to join Jake Ryan on the roster, not replace him. Burks job is to replace ILB Joe Thomas as a coverage LB. Ryan is a 2 down run stuffer, who excels going forward and filling run lanes. Oren Burks is better moving laterally to cover RBs and TEs. He also has some pass rush/ blitz history, he played a bit at OLB and Safety before Vandy moved him inside I am guessing that GB will find various ways to replace Jake Ryan, but many of those won't involve young Oren Burks early on GB can play some alignments with only (1) ILB, both in nickle and in dime looks and Pettine has done this in previous stops GB can find a FA run stuffing ILB on the open market / trade GB can put Clay Matthews along side of Martinez on occasion ( Both Pettine and MM said they want to move Clay around) GB can try Josh Jones along side Martinez, similar to what the Packers rolled out with Burnett last season. Burnett is listed at 209 lbs, Jones at 220, Burks is listed at 232 The challenge with the older run stuffer's who are available... is that they are older...NFL teams will put a target on their back and throw at them, especially if they get into an up-tempo offense that prevents GB from subbing. Its not an easy thing to fix in August and each of the potential solutions has its own set of drawbacks. Last year, GB put too much on Josh Jones plate and he struggled to handle all of the different roles. Per the scout and coaches comments, Burks is a smarter guy, but GB has to be careful not to over-load again
TheOnlyThing
Burks was drafted to (ultimately) join & complement Blake Martinez at ILB. Martinez can defend both the run & pass and has been given play calling responsibilities for the D. Burks is an athlete who ideally will be able to cover athletic RBs & TEs, roam from sideline to sideline, and allow Blake not to have to concern himself with covering for an ILB running mate with severe limitations in the passing game. Burks is most definitely not a run-stuffer. Ryan's forte was defending the run -- in a passing league. If Burks never amounts to anything more than a JAG he will be a completely different sort of JAG than Jake (the ultimate JAG) Ryan.
Siv
Sideline to sideline speed which Ryan has never had. He’ll put on weight over the next couple years and it’ll allow him to hold up better at the line. This year I’d just like to see some solid coverage and when he has an opportunity to showcase his speed on a RB toss/swing route, wrap up.
Uffdaswede
Oren is my guy! I honestly expect his speed to show up on the field this season in impressive ways. I expect mistakes too, but he'll learn from them. (Pleasant shudder at the prospect of a dominant D in Green Bay)
