Aaron Donald effect on a Geno deal?

With reports the Rams are close to signing Donald to a massive deal around 24 million a year, what effect will this have on Geno? Obviously Donald is younger and is considered one of the best young defenders in the game. Personally I don’t see the drop off in play between Donald and Atkins. One has to think Geno is waiting to see what he gets. Do you think Geno gets close to 20 million? I believe Cox on the Eagles got 17 million a year, so perhaps 19 million could do it. Do you think  the Bengals sign him to that type of contract or is he pretty much gone?

I was all at top post something positive then I decided I don't want to talk about it.  I guess I think he's gone after this year if that is the price.

he's not gone.  We can franchise him at least TWICE and still not approach $20 mil.  Franchise tag is the average of the top 5.  So the top 2 average to around $20, but the nexty three drop it some.  I still see 4/68 getting done.

I agree.  Consider that Geno knows he'll play out the deal he gets, and that Donald likely won't.  He will either get cut, or it'll get restructured a few times before he's cut.  Bengals are about the only team that actually gives a "guarantee".

Your numbers seem about right.

I do, however, think this deal probably doesn't get done until close to the gun next year after they've put the tag on him.

Geno's getting Franchised, that's almost a guarantee in my mind.  I think it's 50/50 whether they work out an extension after he's tagged.  The Bengals are usually pretty good about paying their own and while he is 30 now, I could see him being a force for 4-5 years still.

I think Whitworth's situation last season could unfold here again.

In the past I would have called you crazy, the Bengals usually like to pay their own..

After watching Whit just get thrown away, I will just say I hope you are wrong.

Then again Atkins is only 30, and Whit was 36.

Still, are we going to want to pay him close to 20 million annually when Atkins is 33? Can we expect the same player? These are probably the questions the FO will ask in making their decision.

I just can't see it.  And the situations are different.  Age is a factor.  But more importantly, I highly doubt that eother Burney or Austin will be in Mike Brown's ear trying to convince him we already have Geno's replacement on the roster.

This deal gets done before the opening game.  So does Dunlap's.

QFT

That was the big factor with Whit, not his age.  Age was a small factor.

Geno still has a lot of good years left, and they don't have a huge stockpile of young DT's bursting with potential.  They have some nice complimentary pieces.

They'll pay the man.

Hey guys, just poking in to check on the fantasy football thread but stumbled upon this. Do you really think 17M a year will be enough(okay yea enough, but enough to sign him?) I know Donald probably won't see all that money but Atkins is pretty far up there and with an increasing cap and later contracts usually cost more. Wouldnt surprise me if it took 20

I don't know how easy it would be to find this information, but i want to say that Geno's last deal was fairly cheap compared to the market.  It was top of market, but at the time he was the dominate DT and didn't blow it out of the water.

The bengals are good at getting deals.  I think they'll get another one here.
