Image result for patriots eagles preseason

Things to watch for in the first week of preseason:

1. Will Decker put anything together or will he go the way of other vets like Torry Holt, Chad Ochocinco, Reggie Wayne, etc?

2. Can Ettling garner some time with the twos and potentially begin to push Hoyer?

3. Word is Jason McCourty has finally broke in with the one's in camp this week. Will that translate into the game? Is he catching on or is this is final test?

4. Can Jeremy Hill build on his week 1 success with Rex and Sony still out?

5. Which Devin will make a bigger play, Lucien or McCourty?

6. Are we going to see Bentley step up even more and earn a place next to big High and KVN?

7. Will any of the starters who sat last week actually play?

8. Will Wynn get some run at RT with the ones?

9. Who is going to make the big mistake?

10. Can a KR pull ahead in the race? Will Patterson get some chances?

1 he will put together a couple of plays

2 yes

3 he is on the bubble

4 no he is out too with a hammy

5 Lucien x2

6 start yes, show more than week one no - expectations are too high for that

7 yes

8 yes

9 Ralph Webb due to volume of touches

10 Patterson will get a chance if he is healthy but Cyrus Jones and berrios will pull ahead otherwise with more returns than Patterson who might not play

To go or not to go; that is the question. I'm leaning towards going... what you think? And today is the last training camp practice open to the public this summer. I think I want to go to that too because I haven't been in a couple of years. This might be the last one for a bunch of Patriots.

1. Will Decker put anything together or will he go the way of other vets like Torry Holt, Chad Ochocinco, Reggie Wayne, etc? - I think he might show something but not much. I don't like his chances of sticking.

2. Can Ettling garner some time with the twos and potentially begin to push Hoyer? - Maybe. I think he struggles in this game based on his numbers last game and in camp.

3. Word is Jason McCourty has finally broke in with the one's in camp this week. Will that translate into the game? Is he catching on or is this is final test? - I think he's catching on. Jason was legitimately one of the NFL's top cornerbacks last season, so I think Bill wants to see how he'll do in man coverage because he's better typically in zone. I think he'll see time in the game with the ones.

4. Can Jeremy Hill build on his week 1 success with Rex and Sony still out? - I think so. Michel is my pick to become the eventual top running back, despite his knee injury which appears to be bad, but without him or Burkhead I think Hill will definitely get the first-team reps. Hill has been more consistent than Gillislee and has a better power-back skill set.

5. Which Devin will make a bigger play, Lucien or McCourty? - Lucien. McCourty won't play enough to make many plays, but Lucien needs to prove his worth to the team.

6. Are we going to see Bentley step up even more and earn a place next to big High and KVN? - I think he'll get a chance. I think Bentley moreso has the tackling ability and such to play middle linebacker than Elandon Roberts has displayed. I actually think Van Noy might be the guy who gets challenged, by Christian Sam in his case, because the Patriots have relied on Van Noy to play both inside and as the WILL, which he's struggled to do. I'm looking to see Sam play the WILL spot.

7. Will any of the starters who sat last week actually play? - Yes.

8. Will Wynn get some run at RT with the ones? - Maybe. I still think the best path with him is to let Scar coach him up and have him start as a swing guy when somebody goes down before he eventually becomes a long-term starter.

9. Who is going to make the big mistake? - I think the Super Bowl gets in Eric Rowe's head and he chokes a couple times.

10. Can a KR pull ahead in the race? Will Patterson get some chances? - Why anybody other than Patterson would return kicks is just stupid to me. He's the best kick returner in football, why not use him for it?

I'll catch the highlights and listen to some analysis on a podcast, but not too bothered about the game. Be nice to see Brady let one or two loose, and the run defense to improve. Will be interesting to see Hightower's role and if it's still a lot on the edge

I don’t expect much out of him, personally.

To the first part? Potentially. The second? Doubt it.

Unsure, I imagine we see a good bit more of him this game.

Sure, he could. I think he’s got an easy path right now given Burkhead and Michel’s absences.

Probably Lucien, because he’ll get more playtime overall.

I hope so. He looked good last week and he can’t be worse than Roberts in coverage.

I don’t recall; did anything from camp or last week’s game indicate that he’ll be a special teamer?

Brady’s a lock to play at least a little bit IMO. If not, I have to imagine his back’s not as minor as some thought.

Still Waddle’s job for now IYAM. If the season started today, I think you’d see Wynn on the bench. Possible he gets the nod just to see how he’d look, though.

Not sure I’d call it a “mistake”, but I think this is the end for Gillislee. If not the final nail in the coffin, it’s the crippling blow.

KR is still Patterson’s to lose. PR - taking a shot in the dark - I think we’ll see more Berrios.

Tom Brady said on WEEI that he expects to play Thursday. Does anyone believe him? (added a poll)

My thought is if he does, he's probably just gonna play a set of downs. Also Eric Decker to me, has the most to prove.

So I ended up at the Patriots traning camp practice today as it is their last one open to the public in 2018.

What I took away is that Hoyer practiced with the first string offense a lot at the end to probably get ready for the game. Decker will play a lot more snaps than he did against the 'skins. Also Gillislee will have a huge opportunity to retain his role if Hill is out. The Patriots really need Sony Michel back. They can get away with Edelman, Decker and Hogan for the regular season if they want but they'd be better off adding Dez Bryant at this point. No one sticks out between Patterson, Dorsett - (who's now injured), and everybody else. #10 had a solid practice but he looked like a fourth or fifth receiver at best. Braxton Berrios will be on the roster; book it. He is going to be a contributor in his rookie season and solid receiver for several seasons I think. Just needs to get the playbook and then earn reps with Brady instead of practicing with Hoyer.

Jacob Hollister is fast and will make it as a special teamer but curb expectations on him as a pass catcher - he's just average.

Dwayne Allen being hurt opens up a huge opportunity for Will Tye and Ryan Izzo; both appeared to have good days today at practice. Tye can say he has the edge in athleticism probabky but Izzo showed he has potential as a blicker which is important in the Patriots offense.

On defense, the only chance Cyrus Jones has of sticking on the team is as a specialist. He was not even featured on third team from what I remember and at one point was practicing alone on the opposite field catching punts, (which I happened to see him muff one of the first attempts); not looking good for Jones. Rowe was/is pathetic in the slot, (by far the worst showing there today), but he is a bit redeeming at outside corner. Not a huge fan of Rowe so I wouldn't be surprised if he is cut or not re-signed at least after the season.

#92 got chewed out today pretty bad. The rest of the defensive line looks to be set. Linebackers are okay overall but the stars are clearly Bentley and Hightower. Van Noy and Elandon Roberts are concerns because they limit the defenses range against both outside runs and against the pass. I expect the Pats to acquire a linebacker in a trade at some point.

Lastly, Etling is noticeably bigger than Hoyer to me. He is a practice squad candidate but he doesn't seem like a total hopeless case for backup QB.

A few other take away's from practice today:

Jonathan Jones is looking good again and is definitely a safe bet to make the roster if healthy. Jones split time in 11 on 11 drills today primarily with Keion Crossen. JC Jackson, Jason McCourty and Eric Rowe all split time at right corner opposite from Stephone Gilmore. Jomal Wiltz #22 tried valiantly but actually had no defense all day; Wiltz gave up a reception every time despite an occassionally decent positioning.

Last: Keionta Davis #58 looks like a potential bubble guy who can play some linebacker. It seemed like he moved well on the edge and was in position to make plays from inside a couple of times. Definitely one ot keep an eye on throughout the rest of pre-season as he was signed and stashed last year as an UDFA with high hopes once healthy.
