Kiwibrown
The guys from yesteryear would of had the opportunity to play ball full time, which would of given them conditioning advantages. Also with the way the game has changed and the lower level of value placed on running backs, some of them would change positions. Bo Jackson and Jim Brown would both be QBs. They both had an arm and the determination to be the best. I think they would of been rare athletes for the position but would be between Vick and newton as players. Monoxide
He's a terrible human being, but I have to go with O.J. Simpson if we're talking prime running back years. O.J. from 1972-1976 was absolutely unstoppable on some pretty terrible Bills teams with inconsistent blocking. In those 5 years, he was a 1st team All-Pro in each season including his 1973 year where he rushed for over 2,000 yards in only 14 regular season games. With as dominant as he was, the Bills still missed the playoffs that year. If O.J. would have been on the Steelers instead of Franco Harris during the 1970's, this wouldn't even be a discussion. SDotNova
I didn’t see many of these guys live so I’m biased towards the guys over the last two to three decades. Barry Sanders was amazing. Edited May 25, 2019 by SDotNova

(IP traces are neat like that). He's already gone, BTW. Hope he's reading this, so he can see that he's not as smart as he thinks he is.

Sometimes the more physically gifted player doesn’t end up being the better player. Emmit helped his team win games, championships and punched at least a handful of guys’ tickets to the hall of fame. That team was built around knowing Emmit was going to be available and perform on game day.

Barry was available (missed 7 career games in 10 seasons, Emmitt missed 5 games in his first 10 seasons) and performed on game day as well or better than any running back in NFL history. They both were available and performed. So, not exactly sure how this is somehow an advantage Emmitt has over Barry. It's not Barry's fault his team was greatly inferior to the Cowboys roster. Leoric
4924>3414 career touches. Discounting the success and longevity that Smith displayed with the assumption that Barry could have done it too is hardly fair. As for the loaded roster the Cowboys had... I don’t see it. You had a whole bunch of guys that were good but more then anything they executed on what was asked of them. Michael Irvin, Troy Aikmen and Jay Novacek are all decent players but would not sniff the hall of fame without Emmitt.
