The Bears traded a pick for Foles and are committed to paying him $16M over the next 2 years (the contract is for $24M/3 but they can get out of it in 2022), but they’re sticking with Trubisky for now. ... Similar situation to Ponder’s 3rd year in 2013, when Matt Cassel was brought in as a more expensive backup. Ponder’s leash turned out to be 3 games before he was benched in London for a phantom injury. Spielman and Frazier went back and forth a few times on who should start at QB before Ponder was benched for good. The following year, Cassel stuck around as a bridge stopgap starter while Teddy got up to speed (a process cut short by Cassel’s injury), and Ponder was an afterthought except for the one TNF game where he had to step in after Bridgewater got banged up.
