2018/19 Bundesliga Season

Bayern picks up a tight win after a strong game midweek against PSG.  Frankfurt played well and made us earn the win.  We got the goal we needed early and then we defended very well for the rest of the match (though we certainly had chances to win by more).  Kimmich with a beautiful cross for a Vidal header was the difference in the 1-0 win.

It has been pretty great as a fan to see Bayern progress under Jupp Heynckes after looking so poor early under Ancelotti.  Kingsley Coman in particular has taken another step in his development and has looked more and more dangerous with the ball at his feet.  James Rodriguez has also been one of Jupp's favorites as injuries have allowed him plenty of time and he has impressed in his opportunities.  And switching Javi back to defensive midfield is definitely a better fit for him and has helped the team as a whole.

Bosz to get the sack

Report is out saying that Dortmund plans to offically sack manager Peter Bosz on Sunday.  This has been coming for some time with their horrid run of results and very poor defense.  Their great start to the season seems ages ago as they have not won in their last 10 matches in all competitions.  Seems losing at home to 2nd bottom Bremen was the last straw.

They don't really have a choice. Honestly I'm surprised they gave him this long, they've been horrendous. A lot of people questioned this hiring from the start and it looks like they were right.

I don't know if anyone is watching the Koln vs Freiburg match but in the first half Koln was awarded a penalty and there was so much snow on the pitch they couldn't find the penalty spot. The referee had to go to goal line and walk out the distance to figure out where to set the ball. Never seen anything like it.

Koln are up 3-1, if they can get three points they can maybe start turning around their season. They got a draw against Schalke last match.

Unbelievable. Koln was up 3-0 up and lost the match 4-3. Shocking, absolutely shocking.

Can't see them staying up. Absolutely heartbreaking.

Meanwhile, former Koln coach Stöger has taken over in Dortmund. Really happy for Stöger to get such a prestigious job, not sure Dortmund is a good place to be in right now though and whether he can get them into the CL spots. Most Bundesliga teams have been quite poor though.

Yeah I actually like the Stoger hire. He did amazing things with Koln and had some terrible injury and transfer luck. Bild are reporting that they've agreed a deal with Nagelsmann in the summer. That would be a hell of a coup, especially since everyone assumes that he was going to Bayern.

Bayern go into the winter break off a 3rd straight 1-0 decision in their favor.  Ulreich saved the game in the end with a big save off a Stuttgart PK.  Coman fed Muller for the deciding goal.  Hopefully, they will come back from the winter break a little stronger offensively, but the defense has been pretty strong and Ulreich has fared well filling in for Manuel Neuer.

I saw Neuer's return got pushed back, any idea when he's expected to return now?

I always figured he be back sometime in March.  As long as he doesn't push himself to get back too quickly because he is very important to the squad.  Ulreich has done very well in his stead and Beskitas is a very manageable opponent in the 1st UCL elimination round.  Not surprising to me that returning for winter camp was a little too ambitious.

Big news for Bayern as they signed Hoffenheim striker and former Bayern youth player Sandro Wagner to a new contract until 2020.  Gives us a quality backup striker option to give Lewa an occasional breather.  We have been without a backup striker for the past 3 years and it is about time we addressed it.  We have tried Muller in that position when we have Lewandowski out of the lineup, but his skills are just not as well suited for the #9.

And Kingsley Coman was extended until 2023.  Very excited about this as he has taken huge strides in his development this year and is still very young.

Bundesliga officially restarted today with Bayern winning by a solid 3-1 scoreline in Leverkusen.  It started out as a back and forth game and Leverkusen's pressing gave us a quite a bit of trouble early on.  We were able to go into the break up 1-0 thanks to Javi Martinez scoring off a corner.  We settled a bit in the 2nd half and slowly took the game over, though there were some nervous moments later in the game.  Boateng saved the lead late on when Volland was in alone off a giveaway and he got a block in just in the nick of time.  He had a solid game at the back.

James was very influential from his midfield position and Muller did a solid job filling in for Lewandowski.

Hard fought win for Bayern at home.  Bremen played very well.  Actually got the first goal of the match and also leveled the match after they fell behind 2-1.  Sven Ulreich did not have a convincing game in net today after getting some consistency in his game lately.  And outside of Boateng, we were not too great on our end.  But going forward, Muller, Lewandowski, and James were superb.  And while he did not get on the scoresheet, Ribery was also influential up front.  He loves playing Bremen.

Bayern have to overcome another slow start before winning 5-2.  Went down 2-0 early to Hoffenheim, but settled down after that.  Not a great game for Kimmich.  Kingsley Coman MOTM.  Tormented the right side of TSG's defense with his pace.

That's got to be heartbreaking for Hoffenheim to blow a 2 goal lead against Bayern. The fact that Bayern have the ability to come from 2-0 down and win 5-2 shows is just incredible.
