Absolutely horrible extension.  The Seahawks still haven't extended Earl Thomas (who is arguably the best safety in the league), and they let Paul Richardson (a more proven receiver with more upside) walk in free agency for $8 million a season.  So let's pay Tyler Lockett $11 million a season?  I'm baffled by this move because it doesn't match the direction that you would assume the team is going in judging by their recent actions

Their 'recent' direction has been... awful - so it matches well.

Paul Richardson was a nobody before last season, and essentially had all the same problems Lockett has had (lingering injuries, inconsistent production etc.). Blew up in his contract year, exceeding expectations. Since they drafted Lockett, the staff has been infatuated with him. They obviously see a lot more potential in Lockett than Richardson, and are banking on a similar break out from him this year. If he does fulfill the expectations Seattle has for him, good extension. If not, egg on the face.

Should factor in Russell as well. Gonna go out on a limb and say this extension is related to Russell as well. RW is about to be a 30-35 million dollar man. This is his team.

Alshon contract keeps looking better and better...

Alshon's contract was validated the moment he hoisted the Lombardi trophy. No need to even worry about it now. If you are winning championships, it don't matter how the contract negotiations worked out.

Richardson had one good year before that he was hurt all the time.

Ah yes the "Bad moves were justified by a superbowl win" lens. Enjoy it while it lasts mate.

It's a lot of money and the Seahawks have been...let's just say suspect in their decision making lately.  That said, Lockett has some talent and that extra gear to create separation.  I recall when the Steelers gave a 'large' contract to the previously non-elite Antonio Brown and let Mike Wallace walk, there were a lot of people critiquing that decision.  I for one (barring injury) do think Lockett's best days are ahead of him...

There can be only one explanation for such baffling moves the Seahawks have been making of late...

The plot thickens....

https://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/Pete-Carroll-on-Chip-Kelly-He-knows-exactly-10822954.php

Pete Carroll on Chip Kelly, "He knows exactly what he's doing."

He continues, "...I've really admired the work that he's done...the impact that he's had on [the game]."

The journal and video evidence would seem to point to Carroll being influenced by Kelly in ways maybe we didn't understand until now. Could it be that Pete and Chip were actually plotting the downfall of their franchises? If we further connect the dots, perhaps Seahawk fans actually have Chip and his influence on Pete to blame for passing on the 1 yard line instead of handing it off to a seemingly unstoppable Beast Mode in Super Bowl XLIX. Who else besides a Chip Kelly disciple would make such a head scratching call? Ever since that fateful day, Seattle has faded back in to mediocrity and well, we know how Philadelphia and San Fransisco were left at the end of Kelly's tenure.
