We got another TE poached from the PS

  • Matt Lengel - TE - signed by Bengals
  • Jerrell Adams - TE - signed to PS.  Adams was a 6th rounder in 2016 by the Giants and actually put up some stats w/24 Recs / 214 yards and a TD.  Another SC alum.  Physical freak at 6' 5" 250 to go with 4.64 speed.   Not the greatest hands and mediocre blocker, but speed makes him a threat down the seam.

Not sure why we keep getting TE's, we aren't playing the two young studs we already have on the active roster. We keep trotting Griffin out there

Bodies for ST, I guess. No logical explanation.

  • CB - Robert Jackson - released from PS
  • RB - Josh Ferguson signed.  Ferguson stuck on the Colts roster all of 2016 as a UDFA out of Illinois (projected as a 5th-6th rounder).  Didn't have any success as a runner (20 yards on 15 carries), but got a bit of a run as receiving back with 20 rec / 136 yards.  Spent last year on practice squad and was waived/injured after initially being put on IR this year.  Fast, small Justin Forsett/Troymaine Pope type scat back.
  • I'm telling you - don't hold your breath on D'onta Foreman as I haven't even heard about him running on sidelines yet.  21 day clock has started as he has to be activated before bye week or he's off to IR.  Hal got activated first week possible coming off cancer treatment - Foreman is still a ghost and we just added a 5th RB to PS. O'Brien has been pulling his usual Belichick coy stuff on injuries (remember, O'Brien said all summer, he'd be good to go week 1), but the tea leaves I read then still say he's not going to make much if any impact this year and would probably be best served just trying to become the first RB to successfully return from an achilles, next year.  Webster's two snap season has to just add to the caution here.

BTW - We cut OLB Deashon Hall to add Andre Hal back to the active roster.  I'm sure we'd like to sneak him onto the PS if he clears waivers. I think we can survive without 3 PS WRs & Vyncint Smith collecting dust on the active roster & Joe Webb able to run practice reps as WR.

FWIW - Actually kind of glad I took on this project.  Not sure if anyone else cares, but been kind of interesting to watch the bottom of the roster as an insight into how Gaine manages the parts of the roster that don't get much attention.  Getting a decent feel for it at this point.  Practice squad vet Mike Tyson is getting starter snaps tonight with Joseph hurt.

Several moves this week

  • Tyrell Adams - ILB - releasedfrom active roster  (injury settlement)
  • Josh Ferguson - RB - released from PS - maybe Donta Foreman is looking better?
  • Deashan Hall - OLB - re-signed to practice squad - woo apollodamus prediction
  • Josh Keyes - ILB - signed to active roster (been calling for this one since pre-season cuts).  Great move by Gaine as Cunningham got hurt in game today and Keyes is already in there as his replacement - solid coverage LB.

In other former practice squad notes - Ibraheim Campbell, S, spent a few weeks on Cowboys active roster early in the season after we cut him out of pre-season but was cut a few weeks ago.   Got picked up by the Jets this week.

Just as I got done typing that, bottom roster, ps vets Josh Keyes and Natrell Jamerson combined for what should have been the defensive play of the year.  Got hosed by another logic defying case of the NFL office overthinking a basic rule like passes behind the line of scrimmage being a fumble (tuck rule is now a fumble, folks - Brock was trying to bring that pass back).  Regardless - bottom roster matters folks and this play showcased two (and PS vet Mike Tyson caused the first int)!

It's actually a pretty interesting read...

FWIW - In case anyone is wondering, my theory on the Gaine PS has been that he's kept it heavy on WRs to serve as practice stand ins for Fuller, Hopkins, Coutee who have been "limited" in practice nearly every week.  The guy on the PS that I believe has been the Will Fuller stand-in for practice is Isaac Whitney, although Vyncint Smith and Sammie Coates fit the Fuller speed/deep threat profile as well.  My take is that the offense will take a hit in losing Fuller as his game really evolved this season with different routes and sure hands.  Coates and Smith are more of a step back to rookie year Fuller as I anticipate a few ugly drops, but the deep shots will still be there a few times a game if Watson gets time.

  • WR Isaac Whitney - USC UDFA 2017 - spent some time on Raiders last year.  Freakish measurables at 4.34 on a 6' 2" 205 frame.  Track star and prized juco transfer who broke his collarbone so only 11 catches in college.

Cyril Grayson strikes me as the Keke Coutee/Ellington stand-in.  Was added after we designated Jester Weah as PS/IR.

  • WR - Cyril Grayson - UDFA LSU 2016 - Seahawks - "project" in every sense of the word as he never actually suited up for LSU, strictly track star.  4.33 40 / 5'9 183 / 10ft 7" broad jump / 14 bench reps for a little guy - so yes, fits the Gaine theme of athletic lottery tickets for the PS  - profiles more as a return specialist and at least doesn't drive a tricycle like our last vertically challenged LSU returner

Other guy strikes me as just the Nuk stand-in for practice. Probably the best of the 3, but doesn't really have a place on the field with Nuk taking every snap (bless the knees please).

  • Malachi Dupre - WR - Bills - '17 Packers 7th rounder out of LSU - 6'3" - 4.52 - couldn't make Bills no name WR depth chart - don't get the point of all these WRs

  • Cyril Grayson - WR - cut from PS - I'm all for lottery tickets, but let's start with actual football players
  • Steven Mitchell - WR - signed to PS - USC slot and speed guy - 5' 10" 198 - 4.56 40 - spent time on Rams PS as priority UDFA (3 years $1.71 m) - high hopes as a collegiate, but knee injuries 2 of 4 seasons (109, 1,287, 11 TDs in 4 seasons + returned a few kicks) - known as a field stretcher, but underwhelming 40 time (wonder if he was still recovering).  Supposedly had great tape when healthy - super quick in short spaces with huge leaping ability -  smart due with 2 degrees -  high end lottery ticket if he can stay healthy - maybe if he can stay healthy 8 games a season, he'll be a good combo with Fuller's 8 games.

  • David Sharpe - T - cut from active roster (forgot he was there) - probably goes to PS when clears waivers
  • Deante Burton - CB - signed from Falcons PS to our active roster - interesting one.  6' 2" 200 4.53 WR at Kansas State and UDFA with the Packers.  Falcons switched him to CB which Quinn has had success with in the past (CJ Goodwin).  Spent last season and a half on Falcons PS, but they protected him at cutdowns having him make the 53 and play week 1, before hitting the PS again.    My guess is that he'll primarily be a special teamer taking up some slack with Tyson and Jamerson pitching in in the secondary until Wright and Colvin are back (Wright may be back this week). I imagine Hal just got the week off because of the short turnaround on a Thurs game.

  • 2 weeks later...
  • Malachi Dupre - WR - cut from PS
  • Josh Ferguson - RB - resigned to PS

Uneventful week.   Last time we signed Ferguson, I took it as a sign we might be worried about Foreman making it back.  I still don't think we are counting on much from Foreman this year (basically are waiting until this last possible second to start the clock on his 21 day practice window), but with Ervin gone we do have a spot for a 3rd down back/slot/returner if DeAndre Carter doesn't work out.  I'm still holding out hope we bring Pope (Seahawks PS) back if/when Foreman gets IR'd. I'm not interested in CJ Anderson who looked to be in horrible shape, but I suspect some more vet backs might hit the waiver wire or be healthy enough to get released off IR (Marshawn? Blount?  Johnathan Stewart?) if they have a new gig lined up and want more than a paycheck.    Dupre was actually the most qualified of the WRs on our PS, but was pretty redundant after the Thomas trade as he's more of a possession/red zone guy.

FWIW - I'm worried about the Carter acquisition as I think we are giving up Ervin's stability for the upside of a much more dynamic Carter, but Carter is a bit of a hero type returner who doesn't take fair catches.  Sure, I expect a few more exciting returns, but I am risk-averse when it comes to the return game as mistakes lose games far more than they win them.  As we all learned from Jacoby Jones, a fumbled punt almost always means a loss as it's such a swing - PR/KR TD's don't correlate with wins at all (see Josh Cribbs, Leon Washington, Devin Hester).  Trindon Holliday was exciting to watch, but the dude had a penchant for leaving us buried deep in our own territory.  My prediction for Carter is that he's going to add a "wow factor" right up until the point where he gambles and loses.

A bit of a surprise move this week.

  • Andre Chachere - CB - cut from PS
  • David Steinmetz - T - signed to PS

Steinmetz was a UDFA from Purdue (grad transfer from Rhode Island) who spent time with the Dolphins.  Was All Big 10 as a senior. Dude fits the PS profile of physical freak with upside as he's 6' 8' 321 and also decent athletic measurables at Pro day, but likely just a developmental guy around for an extended practice audition.

If I were guessing, I figure letting Chachere go might indicate that either Kayvon Webster or Kevin Johnson could be approaching a IR-return designation (I can't imagine Jermaine Kelly is worth burning an IR return spot on).   I'm pretty much counting on Dylan Cole (wrist) being 1 of our 2 IR-returns. Could just mean we are happy with Mike Tyson, Natrell Jamerson, and Deonte Burton as CB depth.  Reid & Shareece Wright have been killing it to the extent where I'm not sure I want Colvin taking too many snaps. Could also indicate Kyle Fuller, Chad Slade or Roderick Johnson are getting promoted (we can't be a snap away from having a TE playing T like last week).

Would we IR Webster if he was due back in two months? He was IRed around October 9th, a return to the field wouldn't even be six weeks post injury.

Kevin Johnson makes more sense.

Oh, this would be huge with Zach Cunningham still nursing that knee injury...

Rough week for the PS

  • Kyle Fuller - G - poached by Redskins
  • Daeshon Hall - OLB - poached by Eagles
  • Roderick Johnson - T - promoted to Texans active squad last week

Signed to Practice Squad

  • Kennan Gilchrist - ILB
  • Maurquice Shakir - G
  • Amba Etta-Tawo - WR

Losing Fuller stinks.  He had starter upside and a roster-worthy preseason unlike Roderick Johnson who was awful and with Fulton and Kelemete getting hurt every week, I'd have much rather seen us protect him vs. Johnson. We still have Slade sitting around I guess, but we better be prepared to bring him up (Burton is a gonner when Webster comes back, Heath is expendable, Vyncint Smith continues to be a waste of a spot).  Fuller's replacement on the PS Maurquice Shakir gives Vyncint Smith a challenger for dumbest name spelling, but aside from that there is practically nothing to like here as a marginal RT from Middle Tenn St who is big (6' 4", 325) but brings little athleticism or upside.  He spent some time on the Ravens roster last year.

WR Tawo better fits our profile of upside athletic freaks with little experience.  He played a little for Maryland 3 years, then killed in Baber's system at Syracuse as a grad transfer.  6' 1" 220 with a 4.49 40 and amazing college production as a Senior (94, 1,482, 14tds including 5 in one game vs Pitt!).  Was a Jacks priority UDFA and has spent time on the Jags, Chiefs, and Giants PS's.  Dude is an absolute burner (ran 4.35 at his pro day) but has been drop prone which seems a bit redundant with Coates and Smith not playing in that role already.

Gilchrist was one of my preseason favs who I thought could easily make another roster less stacked with LBs, but for us he can easily transition up which makes me feel a little bit better about sending Scarlett to the IR.  Gotta love a roster with two guys from Appalachian State (Lamm) but no Aggies and no more than one from any Texas school.
