Special K (and P and LS and the rest of the special teams unit)

I don't watch college football, what's the difference between kicking in college and kicking and the pros? I don't like Priefer either and wouldn't mind seeing him gone but surely there has to be something more than just some little trick Gruden whispered in his ear. What made him successful in college?

I don’t think it’s really something that Gruden told Carlson, more than it’s something that Carlson identified and worked on.

Go back into training camp/pre-season when Carlson had some issues with his accuracy, and he discussed how tall/long kickers have a tougher time with accuracy, because it’s easier to lose control of their leg, or “levers” as he called it. Reading this article and how Carlson talks about staying more compact, it’s really the same thing.

ST coordinators really don’t teach kicking, they don’t spend a lot of time with the kickers. So, I don’t really think Priefer is necessarily the problem with the kickers.

It’s not really an issue, it’s just fundamentals. Like every position, when someone starts getting lazy with their fundamentals, their performance slips.

Carlson was an 80% kicker in college, so there were obviously some issues to be worked on plus, college kicking is just different enough from the NFL that college kickers are evaluated more on their attributes than their collegiate production.

Priefer needs to be gone.  Talk about embarrassing that he goes to the Raiders and receives better coaching.

I think it's pretty much a given that his run has ended here.  He has been pretty good for the most part, but it's over for him, even though he is not completely at fault for this, as I think it's high time that they hire a kicking coach.

Right on the nosey!

I’m also of the opinion that Zimmer’s approach, and general attitude towards kickers has been key factor in the issues this team has had. He’s spent offseasons adjusting his approach for the rest of the team, it’s time to change that approach when it comes to specialists.

Priefer: “What happened with Blair Walsh, in my opinion, is that he lost a lot of weight. He was trying to be more fit, and when he lost the weight he lost the strength. He lost the strength, he changed his technique and then he wasn’t as successful. That’s something I tried to stop and didn’t get it stopped.”

“I don’t think I’m doing anything different than other coaches, in fact, I think I understand the craft of kicking better than most coaches. I’m trying not to over-coach them. Certainly not over-coaching Dan Bailey. It’s a product of the whole battery working together and being more consistent.”

The narrative before every Vikings training camp is that this will be the season that somebody takes Marcus Sherels' job. There’s always some rookie projected to push him aside as the punt returner. And every year Sherels ends camp as the last man standing. It’s become something of a running joke. The punch line: Only cockroaches and Marcus Sherels will exist when the world ends.

Sherels:  “People have told me that,  I just laugh. It’s kind of funny.”

Punt returner Marcus Sherels’ 70-yard runback on Sunday helped bring his season average to 12 yards per return, which is current the fourth-best mark in the NFL. If Sherels can pass the Bears’ Tarik Cohen for third, he’d secure a $200,000 incentive for finishing in the top three in the league.

The Vikings special teams units put together another solid outing on Sunday after one of their best performances of the season last week against Miami. Dan Bailey made all of his kicks – three extra points and field goals from 24 and 29 yards – and was part of a coverage group that didn’t permit Detroit to start a drive past its own 25 on any kickoffs. Punter Matt Wile had a net average of 45.0 yards and had one punt land inside the 20 while his coverage group permitted only 3.6 yards per return on five tries.

Daniel Carlson is 14-of-15 on field goals with the Raiders. His 93.3 percentage is on pace for franchise record, bettering the previous mark of 91.2 percent set by Sebastian Janikowski in 2012.

doesn't look to me it was a mistake for Spielman to have drafted him. just for Priefer for a lack of proper coaching.

I still think there was more pressure in Minnesota that could have had something to do with it
