Cuba Smugglers

TLDR: Take advantage of a LB group sans KJ Wright. Exploit pedestrian safety group with both starting receivers getting noticeable reps in the slot. If they’re shadowed by Heyward/Lattimore focus on isolating a deep threat and targeting them down field.

Offense

This is Julio Jones offense when we pass the ball. It isn’t usually so simple but Julio wins at every level. We would like some other targets especially to free Jones in the red zone, but DeShaun Watson’s dual threat should serve as a X-Factor if Hawaii wants to play man or double Julio. Watson brings new energy in the offense. It’s imperative to protect him and Jason Peters + Demar Dotson form a terrific tandem of pass protectors. Dotson plays next to David DeCastro so Watson should have time to use a plethora of weapons. He will look to target Kelvin Benjamin on in routes where he uses his big frame against a smaller CB. He will use some reps as a slot receiver to avoid repeatedly seeing Heyward or Lattimore on the boundary. If he is not initially lined up against those players it’ll be more indictative of zone coverage. Julio is the hot route alternate when Watson calls plays at the line. He’s shown to be effective against Lattimore and we consider him superior to Hayward. Randall Cobb is a potent slot weapon whom figures to deal with McCain. As evidenced by moving Julio/Benjamin inside, Cobb figures to line in multiple areas. He may get a reverse or smoke screens where he gets the ball quickly enough to open YAC situations. DeMarcus Robinson and Brandon Marshall give Watson options when he cannot target Julio. Jack Doyle and Rhett Elliot are subsidiary targets when we run shotgun flex formations with a TE behind the guard and center. Elliot also serves as H-Back on Iformation sets.

The initial outline was our plan of spreading the ball out. Our main goal is letting the running backs control the game. Dalvin Cook is going to earn most of the workload. He’s ample for 20 touches but we’ll try getting the other running backs involved. The main reason is Rex Burkhead factors as an important player to receive touches. We ideally picture him to be second in carries (Cook 1st) and third on touches (Cook1 Julio2). Tevin Coleman is the spell back on all situations.

Formations: Base 11 personal. Majority shotgun. Furthermore twins and iformation feature snaps undercenter. Goal line packages in the red zone. This is when Dalvin Cook gets his counter touches with DeCastro leading the way. Also allows some bootlegs where Watson moves the pocket to stretch the field. Julio will be targeted and when doubled should free other weapons. Watson’s decision making based offense.

Conclusion

We should be able to set up the run. This defense missing KJ Wright is huge as Dalvin Cook and Rex Burkhead wear down the first level of the defense. Brandon Marshall’s (Hawaii’s LB) assignment will be targeted on situations he’s forced to cover a RB. DeShaun Watson will be given command to make reads and occasionally create tempo. Features a 45:55 balance of run:pass.

Defense

Russell Wilson, Saquon Barkley, Antonio Brown, Stefon Diggs. This team is going to score 100 points a game with that talent. We’ve seen some talented offenses and this team spreads its talent from the front to its skill positions. We’re not completely fazed due to pairing Fletcher Cox next to Calais Campbell. Yanda is a complete player but he’s coming off a season ending injury. Cam Robinson will certainly have his hands full with Campbell. We love the idea of running stunts where Campbell attacks inside setting Cox up against Robinson. In a matchup against a lethal offense it’s imperative to recognize advantages and repeatedly attack it. Dareus gives us size for early downs and we’ve got pass rushers that can be consistently rotated. Julius Peppers, Terrell Suggs, and Bruce Irvin will come and lineup on both spots as this helps keep our starters fresh and move Campbell inside next to Cox when we’re dealing with pass situations. Jerry Hughes earns the opposite edge rush start as his run defense is an asset. We have four plus run defenders in the trenches. All told, we should frustrate Wilson occasionally and letting Irvin get some spy opportunities means accounts for his running ability.

The LB corp faces an exciting young talent w Barkley. Lewis and Cohen are prolific backups but Barkley respectfully earns most of our attention. Preston Brown is the unique early down player who helps our tackling in the second level as he led the NFL in tackles while being extremely efficient in that area last year. As he and Anthony Walker Jr. (another utility player) get the nod, Walker Jr is the early down spy on Wilson. If Hawaii max protects (keeping a TE or Barkley in pass pro) Walker will likely blitz. We will frequently replace him with a better coverage player in George Iloka on second and third downs to better match the weapons this team provides their QB. Finally on passing and third downs, Derwin James will move to the LB position and be replaced at SS by Morgan Burnett. We’re not completely opposed to some dime packages where we load on DBs while having Derwin run the LB position for Preston Brown. His speed could be useful because our coverage shifts can have Derwin cover Barkley or even serve as a spy in a pusedo pass rush role. The more speed we can place on the field will limit responsibility for the secondary.

The secondary is dealt the greatest task dealing with Antonio Brown and Stefon Diggs. Both guys are strong starters and Richard Sherman will have his hands full with whomever lines on his side. When they go 3 wide he’s stationary on the left side unless a twins formation features both prominent receivers on the opposite side. We will run plenty of cover 4 and two man under schemes meaning we want help for our CBs. Dunbar will be helped on every snap he faces either guy from LaMarcus Joyner. The latter is one of the elite safeties in the league and best in this game overall (between the two teams) so he should negate Diggs/AB a little bit at the very least. Darqueze Dennard put strong film on tape and will also receive help against those top flight receivers if matched up. Derwin James will start at safety and when not in the aforementioned coverages will play the cover 3 Kam Chancellor role where he comes down to defend the Barkley check downs and cross /drag routes where Russell wants his receivers to earn YAC.

Gameplan

Focus on stopping Diggs and Antonio Brown. Dunbar is aided by Joyner when facing either man. We’re bulked up to stop Barkley on early downs (2 LBs, 3 300 DL) only to add more coverage in Derwin James and/or Morgan Burnett at LB on passing downs to respectfully keep the speed on the field. The other players are credible but those four (including Russell Wilson’s dual threat) are the essential roles to stop Hawaii. Rotate pass rushers vs Andrew Whitworth, pursue pass rush stunts against Cam Robinson.

Hawaii Nightmarchers

Offense

Our plan for week one is to attack the Cuba back 7 and get the ball to our playmakers. We expect Antonio Brown to get double covered but he will still get a solid share of targets if he is covered by Sherman or Dennard , we’ll use more curls and posts to help him avoid the safety help. I expect to feature the slot very heavily with Garcon and Diggs on the other side of Brown drawing the double coverage. We will also make sure to give Saquon and Cohen plenty of targets out of the backfield getting the ball in their hands in space as the Cuba Linebackers won’t be able to stay with them. In the running game we plan to pull guards and attack the edges to avoid the meatwall of Cox and Dareus in the middle. We’ll also use some RPO action to allow Wilson to help freeze the interior pass rush a bit and also allow Wilson to use his legs if he sees an opening.

Defense

Our defensive gameplan is to lock down the minimal playmakers that the Cuba offense has and attack the edges. Julio Jones will be double covered all game with safety help over the top to limit any damage he can do. We will drop Karl Joseph in the box to keep his eyes in the backfield, if Dalvin gets the ball he’ll come crashing down and occasionally we’ll have him blitz Watson to keep him running all night. We expect out DEs to keep outside contain and beat the weak Cuba tackles all night, While the Liuget suspension is disappointing  Buckner is one of the best DTs in the game and Rankins will be solid playing the 1T and clogging the middle next to him. KJ Wright should easily handle Doyle on any routes, Marshall should be the thumper in the middle to clean up anything up the middle.

Overall

Hawaii is looking to start off a new season under new ownership, in a new location the right way. We’ll be hosting Cuba who has about a 20 hour flight just to get to our beautiful stadium and we’re sure that the Nightmarchers haunt them. We expect a physical battle and at the end of the day a franchise starting win for this new organization.

Cuba Smugglers Vs. Hawaii

Cuba comes in with a very stout defensive line that is going to make Hawaii work hard for every yard gained.  Fortunate for Hawaii, Barkley showed this week that he can move the chains behind an absolute average Giants line.

The Smugglers lack receiving targets imo.  With receiver Julio Jones being blanketed in double coverage and the team starting the lesser quarterback this week, in Deshaun Watson.  I just don’t see this offense having enough weapons to be successful in the passing game.  The teams depth at receiver and running back are lacking.

Overall, Hawaii walks away with the win.

Word to the wise Hawaii, list the position and first name of your starters/bench players. For all I know you could be starting Quincy Wilson at QB.

I'm going Hawaii at home, I think Brown goes off for 200 yards in this game and I don't see how Cuba plans to stop him, same for Hawaii and Julio. This is a close game but Watson's rust is what keeps me from going Cuba.
