Johnson: “To be back, it says something about the Vikings. And for me to come back means something too. It’s a little deeper than just football. We got relationships outside of here, from the coaching staff and the players and stuff. This was more familiar, I know what’s going on, it feels good.”

Interestingly, all three were listed as centers early in their careers, despite playing the majority of their careers at guard.

Not surprising. We’ve seen plenty of examples lately of players coming into the league at one position, only to change positions later on without being required to change their number.

How about Jim Hough. He played for the Vikings for many years and I don't recall him ever at center.

Haven’t been able to find anything. Probably not a lot of information on how a team listed players from back then, unless you have an old media guide.

Johnson:  “They’ve got a good rotation in here, you’re going to get plays. You’ve got to take advantage of the plays you get. So I’m not looking at it as a starter or backup type deal, you know? The league knows who I am. Guys in the locker room know who I am. So I’m not here because I’m trying to prove I’m a starter or if I’m coming in a rotation. I’m going to come in, do my job, contribute as much as possible and hopefully we win. I’m just taking it in stride right now, it’s something that I wasn’t expecting, as far the better situation that I’m in. I’m taking full advantage of it, if I was going to land somewhere. We had a couple more offers from other teams or whatever, and out of the other teams I felt like this was the best fit.”

Zimmer: “We obviously didn’t want to let him go, Tom’s a good football player. He’s been great for us in the time we’ve been here, so that’s all been good.”

He started quite a few games at guard. I can't definitively say he never played center, but I don't recall seeing him at center. Then again, it was a few years ago. Maybe some of the other medium time or long time Vikings fans that watched those teams can chime in if they ever remember him at center, or even talk of him playing center.

Pro-Football-Reference lists him as G-C, but there is no record of him actually playing any games at C.

Back in the day...the NFL was pretty strict about the assignment of numbers for positions.  The AFL was a little more "free form."  If I remember correctly....

NFL:

1-19, Quarterbacks and Kicking Specialists (at one time, kickers usually had other jobs on the team)

20's. Running backs Split Ends, Defensive Backs

30"s, Running backs, Defensive backs

40's, Running backs, Defensive backs, occasionally Receivers

50"s, Centers, linebackers

60's, Guards, linebackers

70's, Offensive Tackles, Defensive Linemen

80's, Defensive Linemen, Receivers, Tight Ends

90's, not popular in the NFL until the 1990's

There were exceptions to each of these categories; but for the most part, the number designations were uniform.  When the two leagues merged, there was some realignment of the numbers...but one of the things that sticks in my mind is that in the AFL, San Diego Chargers quarterback John Hadl wore number 21.  After the merger, he was traded to the Green Bay Packers and was forced to wear number 12.  On him, it just didn't look right.
