2018 CFB/2019 Draft Prospects

I just thought of something truly horrible.....

What are the chances that we draft a player in the 1st....only to have him ride the bench?!!!

Think about it.

What are our biggest needs? LG, C, DI/IPR, FS, WR

LG: James Hurst has 45 starts for us.

C: Matt Skura has 29 starts for us.

DI/IPR: Wormley, Henry, Pierce, Williams, Sieler

FS: Weddle(Assuming he isn't cut), DeShon Elliot

WR: Crabtree(Assuming he isn't cut), Snead, Moore, Lasley, Scott

I'm not joking, we should be worried. Recent team history confirms that. Try and construct a path to significant playing time for an early round prospect, that falls in line with what we've seen from the team lately. Then please share it with me...cause I'd love to know.

Depending on for how long you're talking about, its 100%

It's crazy. I don't know why it just hit me either lol.

Oh well. It's important we don't kid ourselves I guess. Cause boy, even in the most extreme cases like us landing an Ed Oliver or something. If you think Harbaugh is just going to let them ride that 1st Round billing and Elite pedigree to a guaranteed and overwhelming share of snaps- you're high.

If the player is good enough, they will eventually crack the lineup in the first season. That is of course if its a player on a position where there is some positional flexibility, and we don't go out and invest in a LT, QB.

If we go draft a Josh Jackson, I bet we would see him immediately. If we go with a typical outside wide receiver like Metcalf, I believe we would see him on the field quickly as well - unless he is useless in TC.

On the defense, a first round pick would most likely be used in rotation like we saw with humphrey, especially if it is a free safety with little experience reading NFL offenses. If Canady is healthy I could see them try him out at free safety as well.

But other than that I agree with Dreamkid. It is also because we have a deep roster where everyone has starting talent - although the can be upgraded.

This should be noted. We should be grateful in some regards that our FO is so apt at identifying starter level talent. Many teams can't say the same.

Are you confident in that though Dan? Injuries have facilitated more playing time for young contributors on our team then ability has. If Alex Lewis never gets injured, it's hard for me to see Orlando starting at all last season.

I'm going to assume you mean Josh Jacobs. A runner would be more likely to get early looks. We worked in Ty pretty quick. Again though, it isn't hard to see him being trapped behind Dixon & Edwards - 2 competent players with seniority over him.

WR might have the easiest path to playing time. Especially if we cut Crabtree. There's still roadblocks though. 1. I'm going to assume(Maybe I shouldn't lol) getting Hurst & Andrews on the field together will be a priority. 2. Snead and Moore both have a rapport with Jackson. Snead is literally his neighbor and Chris Moore is an ascending player in a contract year. 3. Don't rule out us adding a Vet WR in FA. 4. If Lasley or Scott flash at all, the coaches will trust them over a Rookie.

Say we draft Nasir. If we don't cut Weddle, how is he going to get on the field? We know Weddle isn't coming off the field. Especially if he still has the green dot. Jefferson? Levine? Young? I don't see it. If Weddle is cut, we should then bet on a competition/rotation between Adderley & Elliot. Similar to what happened with Peanut and Young last year.

To have Blue Chip or at least incredibly talented prospects only likely being able to force a rotation is an interesting state of affairs. I think a lack of playing time for guys like Chuck Clark, Tim Williams, Tyus Bowser, Chris Moore, Hayden Hurst, Kenny Young & Orlando Brown Jr has hurt us overall. I'd be lying though if I ignored the progression that Harbaugh and our coaches have forced in players like ZDS & Peanut by inundating them with reps. As long as they have success stories like that and we're winning games, then they aren't going to switch up their approach regardless of if it's prudent or not. It's just something we're going to have to accept going forward.

I wonder if our drafting approach has begun to change to accommodate Harbaugh's philosophy too. Think about it, our historic BPA model lies in almost direct conflict with our current operating methods. You can't hammer BPA talent into a team that favors seniority over pedigree. It will lead to a significant waste of valuable resources.

Tim Williams & Tyus Bowser were both BPA picks. We had Suggs, Smith, Judon, and Correa all with the club. Drafting them created a log jam at the position, and they have yet to see playing time commensurate with their ability or our investment in them.

3 out of our 4 picks in the top 80 from the 2017 Draft, Bowser, Williams, and Wormley- weren't even activated on gameday for stretches of the 2017 Season. We missed the playoffs once again and the heat was cranked up big time on all levels of the organization. Then what happens next draft?

We're faced with a situation where we have a BPA dream staring us in the face. 2 Elite prospects in Derwin James & Tremaine Edmunds are both on the board! What do we do....

We trade down and pick Hayden Hurst, a Tight End. The weakest position on the roster with only 2 contract years players that both had red flags at it. A pure need selection that left all of us rightfully scratching our heads.

It's all quite interesting. With our seemingly biggest draft needs this year being positions that could use an upgrade or injection of a specialization. Rather than pure holes that need to be addressed, and Harbaugh extended + DeCosta now in charge. It should make this draft a sneakily layered offering.

Christian Miller from Alabama anyone? I like what I have seen from him from just a couple of minutes from games. Very active with his hands.

I haven't watched full cut ups yet, but I've watched skill breakdowns on him and he certainly seems like the kind of mid-round player we'd pursue.

Jeffery Simmons might have torn his acl. Now he is suddenly a prospect that looks mightily interesting as a 4-5 round pick for next season.

Sidney Jones still went in the 2nd Round. I can't see Simmons, a better player, going any later. This does open up the chance of us actually getting him though. I'd still use a 1st on him quite frankly. A top 5 Talent at Pick 22, what more could you hope for? Who cares if we have to wait a year to play him. We might do that anyway, just with a worse player lol.

I still think we went outside the box once we drafted Lamar Jackson, and that approach could change with DeCosta.

We tend to go for all-round players rather than specialists, but that could change.

When I wrote this, I forgot to write, that earlier we would never draft a guy like Darren Sproles or an Alvin Kamara or a Tarik Cohen.

I hope we change that, because Darwin Thompson is exactly what we need. There is our 3. down pass catching back with some move the chain + playmaking ability.
