urinals...?

Well, that's just implied.

Speaking of urinals....

There's a design flaw at the new stadium.

Between sections 116 and 112, there's TWO women's bathrooms but only ONE men's bathrooms.

The men's bathroom has a constant line during the game. There's NEVER a line in the woman's room. Even during halftime.

It should be the other way around....2 men's.....1 women's.

Defense allowed one TD and 17 points on the road to a team averaging 30 points per game, and 308 yards to a team averaging 370. They held the Bears to 4.3 yards per play (season average 5.7) and forced 3 turnovers, 2 in Bears territory.

They missed some tackles early in the game and should’ve been spying Trubisky in the first half — he was never going to beat them with his arm. The personal fouls were dumb, though both Wilson’s and Smith’s seemed like cheap calls.

Bottom line is that the defense again played well enough to win, as they’ve done every week except the Rams game.

For the season as a whole, the defense is now:

  • 5th in yards per game
  • 6th in yards per play
  • Tied for 6th in passer rating
  • 6th in passing yards per game
  • 4th in rushing yards per game
  • 1st in 3rd down percentage
  • 5th in 1st down passing percentage (% of all pass plays converted to 1st downs)
  • 1st in TDs allowed
  • 11th in points allowed (including 4 return TDs not on the defense, the most in the league)

They’ve allowed 18 TDs — 8 in 5 days in the Bills and Rams games, and 10 in the other 8 games combined. 18 TDs from scrimmage is the fewest allowed in the league.

They’re a top 5 defense. If the offense was as good as we thought they’d be, they’d have 7 or 8 wins right now.

If we can get ourselves some semblance of an offensive line, we should be looking good.

Defense looks stable and good again...Bears struggled a lot in passing game, if not for Trubisky's running, it would have been worse. Mitch's running did definitely confuse the defense a bit. Most importantly, our secondary isn't giving up some big plays anymore like how we did in first 4 weeks. Good to see.

There's a clear issue with the defense against QBs who look to run, not just scramble. Josh Allen and Trubisky had big games on the groun. How many more QBs do we face this year that regularly look to run. Russell Wilson? Who else?

It's a good thing Rodgers seemingly lost that element from his game. But Wilson should be the end of it until Trubisky again in week 17.

I'd like to see Zimmer turn over the playcalling duties. Not that's he not doing a great job but I'd like to see him take on more of a head coaching role than a coordinator role during the game. Edwards has only called one game against Dallas but I think he was fantastic at it.

Plenty of head coaches call plays. I don't see this as an issue.

Still 1st in TDs allowed:

Packers and Bears games continued the Vikings defense’s averages outside the Rams game: a little under 300 yards per game, under 5 yards per play, 1-2 TDs allowed.

They’re now 3rd in yards allowed per game, 3rd in rushing yards allowed per game, and 5th in passing yards allowed per game, despite the brutal performance vs the Rams, and with multiple young backups (Weatherly, Wilson, Hill, Kearse, Harris, Alexander) seeing significant playing time.

If they play well in Foxboro, and win in Seattle, the narrative around the defense taking a step back this year should finally change.

Vikings have the best defense in the league by DVOA (which does adjust for quality of opposition) from week 6 (Cards game) to now:

Quote

Minnesota ranked 25th through Week 5 with 6.7% defensive DVOA. In Weeks 6-12, Minnesota has the No. 1 defensive DVOA in the league at -23.1%.

https://www.footballoutsiders.com/dvoa-ratings/2018/week-12-dvoa-ratings

I’ve made the point before but it’s not so much that the Vikings defense was terrible from weeks 1-5 as they had a brutal game against the Rams. By DVOA:

  • Weeks 1-3 (through the Bills game): -13.4% (10th)
  • Weeks 1-4 (adding Rams game): 7.2% (25th)
  • Weeks 1-5 (adding Eagles game): 8.9% (26th)
  • Weeks 6-12: -23.1% (1st)
  • Weeks 1-12: -9.8% (6th)

So it looks like they would’ve been roughly at -10% for 4 of the first 5 games, leaving out the Rams game. Not bad, but but clearly a step below their performance in the 6 games since, starting with the Cards game,  where they’ve played like the best defense in the league at -23% (Chicago leads for the season as a whole with -22%).

Interestingly, their season as a whole defensive DVOA is basically the same, roughly -10%, as it was for weeks 1, 2, 3 and 5 — skipping the Rams game. That means the significant improvement with their lower defensive DVOA from weeks 6-12 (6 games) is only enough to cancel out the Rams game by itself. A 13% improvement (-23% vs -10%) weighted by 6 games, vs a single game where their DVOA must have been incredibly bad. If the Rams game was 6 times worse than the improvement it’s cancelling out, that would put it (6*13=) +78% from the -10% baseline, meaning at +68%.

in other words:

  • weeks 1, 2, 3 and 5:  -10%
  • week 4 (Rams): +68%
  • weeks 6-12: -23%

...that’s a big outlier
