It seems odd that they'd announce it then not do it. I get that it was seemingly a 'playoffs or bust' situation. And that's still an uncertainty. But announcing intent to extend him, then dumping him instead would be pretty ****ty. Not to mention stupid. And it would be a red flag (the severity of which is unclear) for any future candidates.

I know other teams have done similar things and been alright. Hell, we extended pretty much everyone then immediately let folks go. But, right away, that's gotta be in the back of the minds of any potential coaches if it were to happen.

Maybe, both sides still have to agree to terms.  Harbaugh is signed through next season at 7 million.  If he went to another team he would probably get 5 years and hypothetically 9 million per year.  So if your Harbaugh why would you settle for anything less on term and from the Ravens?  When the owner publically states he thought about firing you, no hometown discounts.  Wink Martindale being floated as possible HC candidate, just sayin....

Bizarre exits happen all the time in the NFL.  Jimmy and the Cowboys.  Parcells.  Hoodie.  Gruden.  Mc Daniels. It probably gets done, but Harbaugh has some leverage now, even going into his final year and possibly being a UFA HC after 19.

I still wouldn't be shocked if Licht survives.

if he didn t directly hire koetter and the decision was made above him, kind of hard to blame the GM if the talent acquired isn t being used right or developed.  They were paying Mike Smith like a HC, so his voice woild be heard on defensive personnel.

The question is are the Bucs losing because of lack of talent? If the answer is no, and the GM didnt directly pick the HC, that s a tough call.

Even if he did make the call on Koetter, it was his first pick. And, at the time, it was the right one. The alternative was keep Lovie and lose Koetter. Jameis has been the focus the entire time. And keeping him in the same offense was important. Lovie would've just been fired the following year and Jameis would've been in his third offense in three years.

In terms of drafting, I like what Licht's done. The Aguayo trade up was bad. But he maneuvers the draft well. And we seem to get the guys we want without using multiple picks to do it.

Free agency is something he hasn't really done well. But keeping Greenberg has saved us in terms of cap space. So the signings bomb but don't hurt us in the long run.
