About time to dust this off.

2003 Week 14 Indianapolis Colts at Tennessee Titans

Also known as the Eddie Berlin game. Titans and Colts were going for first place in the AFC South. Both had 9-3 records. Titans won the newly formed division the previous year at 11-5 while sweeping the Colts who finished 10-6. For a minute there was a lazy narrative that the Titans were more of a "physical" team (played outside, been to the Super Bowl, established defense, offense went through Eddie George etc.) and the Colts were more of a "finesse" team (played in a dome, team defense wasn't so great, known for having 3 early playoff one-and-done exits).

All of that essentially changed this season. Colts dumped on Tennessee early in the year at Indianapolis 33-7, and came out on top in week 14, taking advantage of the Titans 4 turnovers. Despite the blunders, the Titans still made it a close game. Marvin Harrison also has one of the best catches I've ever seen here. It's a little after the 8 minute mark.

The Colts essentially took over the AFC South after this, and a long period of Manning dominance ensued.

I remember the Titans playoff game the year before against the Steelers or ravens so good.

He absolutely dominated the Eagles that year. McNabb and Reid finally show up in a big and and the defense gets torched.

I just saw this on NFL 100.

The only reason Fitz did not stop James Harrison short of a TD on that return was that Antrel Rolle was gawking on the sidelines as Harrison ran by and he pretty much threw a block on Fitzgerald who was trying to catch up to the play.  He did at about the 4 but he could have gotten there sooner.

BTW this is FALSE

McNabb was rancid in the first half and on the last drive of the game. He was excellent for about 25 minutes but it was not enough.

  • McNabb hits Hank Baskett in the shoes and forces him to the ground when he could have ran for 80 yards. (he gets like 14)
  • The next play is an open deep Greg Lewis and McNabb misses him badly.
  • McNabb also had a pick that DeSean got back by forcing a fumble after a long return.
  • This is all on YouTube

It was 24-6 at the half because the Eagles had no real QB in that half.

McNabb destroyed the same team on Thanksgiving night (48 points) and he and Primetime gave the verbal middle finger at the Eagles fans.

25 points was not enough

Curtis had 4 catches for 122 yards and was mugged early by Rod Hood on that last 4th down play but lets blame him?

  • McNabb was an ugly 0-3 on the 3 plays before that 4th down play

The defense gave up 369 yards, got a turnover and held the Cardinals to 7 in the 2nd half.

  • They also carried the team in the 2 games before that as McNabb rambled to 5 TDs and 6 turnovers in that playoff run.
  • Fitz had 152 yards as a man possessed and the rest of the receivers combined for 127.
  • They also stopped the Cardinals after McNabb fumbled the ball away at the Eagles 43 to start the 2nd half
    • The D gave the Cardinals 1 whole yard and forced a punt
  • Lets blame the D, maybe?

This was just posted on NFL Throwback from YouTube.

1984 Week 7 Pittsburgh Steelers at San Francisco 49ers

Chuck Noll's over the hill, aging Steelers squad against Bill Walsh's best 49ers team. The 49ers went 18-1 in 1984, and this was their only loss. Nice, close game all the way up until the final few seconds.

Sunday's game between the Texans and Chargers inspired me to post this highlight package of a game between the Oilers and Chargers in week 12 of the 1985 season. Both teams were barely alive in the playoff hunt, but put on an offensive show in the Astrodome. Oliver Luck started in place of Warren Moon, and had a huge game. Dan Fouts also put up mega numbers. This game goes down to the wire of the wire. Just when you think it's over, there's more. Exciting contest, partly due to both teams having awful defense. Lionel "little train" James shines for the Chargers, making a couple of circus grabs for long gains. A special player that people tend to forget.

1991 Week 16 Buffalo Bills (12-2) at Indianapolis Colts (1-13)

This was just a complete beatdown. A reminder of how good the Bills were at the time, and how they could just bury bad teams. By the end of the first quarter it's already 21-0, and that was without Thurman Thomas who had to leave to game early with a leg injury. Backup QB Frank Reich is in by the 4th quarter, and the entire game just looks like a practice session for Buffalo. The Colts who had finished 7-9 in 1990, would end up 1-15 in 1991, and fired Ron Meyer 5 games into the season who had been there since '86. Jeff George screws up his elbow, and at one point the Colts are down to their 3rd string QB.

NFL Primetime Edition: 2001 Week 5 Baltimore Ravens (3-1) at Green Bay Packers (3-1)

This is an interesting game to me, because heading into this game would be the first test in my opinion where that 2000 Ravens faced a top quarterback that was able to play 60 minutes. The previous year, the Ravens really didn't have to face any big time passers at the time due to their schedule, and the AFC just wasn't that top heavy with many really good passers. McNair and Brunell were probably their biggest tests in that regard. They did play Rich Gannon in Oakland in the AFC title game that year, but he got knocked out of the game early. To be fair, he wasn't playing well up until that point. Even though it was a year later, the Ravens still had the core of their defense intact. They didn't have the QB combo of Trent Dilfer/Tony Banks since they signed Elvis Grbac fresh off putting up big numbers in Kansas City. They also lost Jamal Lewis to a season ending injury that offseason. Still, surely the defense would be able to slow down Favre and the Packers?

1980 Week 7 Green Bay Packers (2-3-1) at Cleveland Browns (3-3)

This was the year Brian Sipe won the MVP award as QB for the Browns, and the game against the Packers is a good example of the type of season he had. Sipe throws for nearly 400 yards against the Packers in a close game that comes down to the wire. Lynn Dickey and James Lofton make the contest interesting. Classic game in general, and it's interesting to see that torn up field in Cleveland that players had to play on.

This is just a snippet of the NFL Today show from December 26th, 1977. Brent Musburger, Irv Cross, and Phyllis George doing the highlights from the divisional round of the playoffs. One of the games is the "Ghost to the Post" game between the Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Colts. You'll also notice Tom Jackson making plays on the Broncos squad to help get past the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I liked what one person had to say in comments regarding how they prefer this format of presentation compared to today. Everything was a lot more simplified, and relaxed. No former players/analysts, a ton of graphics on the screen, news sets looking like the Apple store, no fantasy football information, and the music tune even had a "news bulletin" chime to it. Also, there are only 3 people at the desk doing the highlights, not 5 or 6. I know it will never happen, but it would be cool to see this done for a season by even just a channel on YouTube or something.

1984 NFC Divisional Chicago Bears (10-6) at Washington Redskins (11-5)

Hard fought game between both teams. This is the first meeting between the squads since 1981, and in that time Mike Ditka has become coach of the Bears, and the team had only gotten stronger particularly on defense. Theismann was under pressure most of the game, and was sacked 7 times accordingly. The Redskins were the best best in the NFC on converting third downs, and got 22 first downs in the game to the Bears 13 while committing only one turnover. Chicago didn't necessarily dominate the TOP either. Despite this, the Bears were still able to limit the Redskins to only 19 points. It was just one of those games where Washington did worse on the field compared to what the box score indicated. Steve Fuller actually had a decent game at QB for Chicago. There is a nasty hit by Bears safety Todd Bell on Joe Washington at the 3:00 minute mark that certainly wouldn't fly in today's NFL.

1998 Week 13 Pittsburgh Steelers (7-4) at Detroit Lions (4-7)

This is the Phil Luckett Thanksgiving Day overtime coin toss fiasco. Also the last time Barry Sanders experienced a win. Solid, close game between two teams, both still in the hunt for the playoffs. Always funny seeing that 3 inch carpet they used to play on over the concrete floor. Brutal. The Steelers entered this game 7-4, but would lose the next five games to finish 7-9. Lions didn't win after this either, so both teams essentially crumbled. Herman Moore made some nice catches in this game. Too bad he never had a quality QB.
