Super Bowl XXXII: Green Bay Packers vs. Denver Broncos

Rewatching this game again was a pretty neat experience. Probably the two guys with the most impressive arm to go with a career dueling each other at the big show. Great to see Elway finally get his glory moment. Both of these squads were just stacked across the board. It's amazing to see how huge Gilbert Brown was. Especially in that era, he was just a monster. The Broncos did a good job of opening holes for Terrell Davis, and completely shut down Reggie White off the edge. Tight game throughout the contest, and big plays on both sides. Can't ask for much more in a football game. Probably a top 5 Super Bowl in my book.

1980 NFC Championship Dallas Cowboys (14-4) at Philadelphia Eagles (13-4)

Ok game for a championship. I like cold games such as these, but unfortunately it doesn't make well for big passing days, which was the result here in this game. Both QBs played lackluster ball, but in particular Ron Jaworski who just had a barrage of errand throws, including two interceptions (9 for 29 for 91 yards!!!) The pass defenses were already pretty stout as well. Fortunately for Philadelphia, they had Wilbert Montgomery who had the game of his life racking up 194 yards, and a touchdown on 26 carries. He was the hero Philadelphia needed. Dallas turned the ball over 4 times, including 3 in the third quarter on 3 straight possessions, twice in their own territory. Philadelphia only managed 10 points though from those opportunities, taking a 17-7 lead. It wouldn't matter though, as the Dallas offense was unable to move the ball most of the afternoon, other than a drive for a TD in the 2nd quarter. The turnovers, Eagles defense, roaring crowd, and maybe the weather were just too much to overcome. This was the last time the Cowboys wore this shade of blue for their uniforms, as there was a belief that the jerseys had a curse of losing associated with them, which is why the Eagles wore white in Philadelphia. The next year the Cowboys had a darker shade unveiled for the franchise.

2000 AFC Championship Baltimore Ravens (14-4) at Oakland Raiders (13-4)

This was the best offense the Ravens faced all season long, and they basically kicked the Raiders teeth in. The Oakland offense only gained 191 total yards on offense, and turned the ball over 5 times (they finished the season with only 20 turnovers which was 2nd best in 2000). The Ravens defense smothered Raiders QB Rich Gannon to the tune of 4 sacks, and a forced fumble. Early into the 2nd quarter, Gannon took a massive, "dirty" looking hit from defensive tackle Tony Siragusa, which resulted in a collarbone injury. Backup Bobby Hoying came in for Gannon, and the results were pretty bad from the jump. Gannon tried to give it a go after halftime, but it was clear he just wasn't the same after the damage, and went to the bench in the 4th quarter. Baltimore had a pretty secure lead for most of the game, on the backs of a 96 yard Shannon Sharpe TD, and three Matt Stover field goals.

I've heard over the years, that if Gannon doesn't get injured, the Raiders have a good chance to come back and win this game. Personally, I don't see it that way. The Ravens defense just seemed too much for the Raiders to handle, and it was the first time they had seen them all year. From the first quarter, the offense seemed completely overwhelmed, and Gannon wasn't lighting up the joint before he went out either. Would have loved to have seen the Ravens play the Rams that year.

Great track from NFL Films by Tom Hedden. Vintage mid to late 90s, my wheelhouse. I first heard this on the NFL Films Game of the Week broadcast in 2003, that did a feature on the 1999 AFC Wild Card game between the Bills and Titans (Music City Miracle). Didn't know it was around with their content as early as 1997. Glad I finally stumbled upon it, as I was looking for this one personally. It's hard to find these songs though since the names are mysteries, and the content is rarely released commercially.

Super Bowl XXXV - Baltimore Ravens vs. New York Giants

Such a bizarre game overall. It came at an awkward time where Dan Marino, John Elway, Troy Aikman and Steve Young were all gone, Peyton Manning was just starting to mature and Tom Brady was still an afterthought sixth rounder. At the 4 minute mark, Phil Simms says Kerry Collins was going to be the key to the game and described him as a franchise quarterback. Collins was indeed a key to the game; this is without a doubt the single worst performance by a quarterback on the grandest stage and I don't think we'll see one as bad ever again. Seeing Ray Lewis and the rest of this defense violate Collins is cringeworthy.

You should watch Super Bowl 20 with your boy Tony Eason.

1986 NFC Divisional Playoff San Francisco 49ers (10-5-1) at New York Giants (14-2)

Clearly, this was the Giants year. I have this game tied for the worst loss of Bill Walsh's career as a 49ers coach along with the 1987 meltdown against the Vikings at home the very next year. 49ers got completely destroyed, and utterly humiliated at the Meadowlands. The previous year the 49ers came in, and lost to the Giants 17-3, but that game never seemed out of reach. The 49ers went into that game very bruised up, and maybe the previous victory against the Cowboys to make the playoffs might have taken too much out of them. However in this game, there wasn't that kind of excuse. The Giants just kept making play after play. Joe Morris ran buckwild again, Simms had 4 TDs even on a lackluster statline, and the defense swarmed Montana continuously. The onslaught really didn't come until the beginning of the second quarter, as the game was still 7-3 Giants at that point. Once Morris got his first TD though it was lights out. Montana got drilled right before halftime by NT Jim Burt, which resulted in a pick six by Lawrence Taylor. Montana left the game with a concussion, and ended up staying in a local hospital overnight. 28-3 at the half, and the final score was 49-3. Also, Carl Banks was everywhere in this game making plays. Clearly deserved the game ball. Not sure if it's a top 5 franchise loss in my book, but definitely a top 10. Ugly.

Eason went 0/6 before getting hurt, but absolutely no one gave us a chance in that game. Beating Marino was our SB. In the case of Baltimore/New York, Baltimore was only favored by 3.

1993 Week 17 Houston Oilers (10-4) at San Francisco 49ers (10-4)

Saturday, December 25th

Could you imagine a team in the final couple of weeks, vying for home field advantage in the playoffs, pulling their starting quarterback in the middle of a tight game in the second half? Well, it actually happened. The 90's had some nutty stuff happen in games at times, that would not be as well received today. The Oilers and 49ers were both in the thick of trying to get HFA in their respective conferences. Houston was largely in a race with the Bills (who they already lost to), Chiefs, with the Dolphins, Raiders, Steelers, and Broncos in the mix. They rode a 9 game winning streak into Candlestick Park after a disastrous 1-4 start. The 49ers were in the race for top dog in the NFC against Dallas/NY Giants, and the Lions. They had lost to Dallas, but already beat the Lions the previous week (while also clinching the division). The chances were slim to get the number one seed (one of the three division winners would pounce on it), but still there. This was the only game played on Christmas, with the rest of the NFL action set to follow the next day on Sunday. I think this was the last time the 49ers played on Christmas day. Maybe it was the only time. I do remember the Oilers playing another time on Christmas in 2004 against Denver, but that was when they had already become Tennessee.

Anyway, the game was a tight contest the entire afternoon. Both teams turned the ball over 3 times, and Houston had a 10-0 lead going into halftime. In the third quarter with 3:33 remaining in the game, 49ers head coach George Seifert pulled Steve Young, and replaced him with Steve Bono. Steve was under duress a good amount of the day, and the passing game was out of sync all afternoon. Still, there was an entire quarter left to play with the Oilers hanging on to a 10-0 lead. Apparently Seifert had decided mid-week he would only play Young for a half heading into this game, but Young didn't get the memo. He wasn't thrilled with the decision. Replacment Steve Bono did lead the squad to their only score of the game with a touchdown pass to halfback Amp Lee on a dumpoff in the redzone. Still, the 49ers couldn't stop running back Gary Brown in the final minutes for Houston. He had a great day killing the 49ers on the ground for over 100 yards, and milking the clock in the final 6 minutes of the 4th. QB Warren Moon was also pulled for Cody Carlson in the 4th quarter late after Moon landed on the ground from a hard hit. He bruised his ribs, and so coach Jack Pardee had him sit during the final crucial drive to try and wrap the game up. Houston won the game 10-7, and their next game, and got the number one seed in the AFC playoffs. However, they choked at home to the underdog Chiefs which ended the 7 straight year run of the Oilers making the playoffs. They didn't make a championship game appearance in that span. The 49ers dropped this game, and next. They ended up as the second seed with a 10-6 record, but fell to Dallas in the championship game for the second straight year.

All in all, good defensive game between two of the better teams of the early 90's. Chris Dishman, an often forgotten corner who had a decent career, had a great game in this one. Had some great coverage on Jerry Rice.

1992 AFC Wild Card Game Houston Oilers (10-6) at Buffalo Bills (11-5)

Sunday, January 3rd, 1993

The Comeback. One week after pounding the Buffalo in the Astrodome 27-3, Houston traveled to Buffalo in an AFC Wild Card game rematch, only to orchestrate the biggest choke job in NFL history. The Bills erased a 32 point deficit in the 2nd half after being down 35-3, and won the game 41-38 in overtime. For as dominant as the Oilers looked in the first half, they completed crumbled in the final two quarters. Backup Bills QB Frank Reich was filling in for starting QB Jim Kelly (who injured his knee the previous week), and eventually caught fire along with the rest of his squad. One of the greatest games in sports history.

Maybe my favorite non-49ers player. It was a pleasure to watch Andre play football. Not just because he was a dominant player, but he just seemed like a good human being overall that can inspire anyone in any profession to try their hardest to reach their goals. It's too bad he languished all of those years in Houston, where the Texans just kept tripping over themselves as a franchise.
