Spoiler content

We’ve had some recent discussion in the Game of Thrones thread about is and isn’t a spoiler and how to go about handling talking about leaked info in a thread where others may not want to see that leaked info.

There’s also a lot of members unaware of how to use the new spoiler tags.

I wanted to open up a discussion so we can as a forum come to a general consensus on the courtesy around protecting spoiling content for other users.

First off, the forum provides a spoiler tag option. There is no button for it, but you may invoke the spoiler tag as so:
content to be hidden here
content to be hidden here

So I will open it up to everyone to discuss, to get a gauge on how you would like this used?

Should teaser info be placed in the spoiler tag? How long after a movie/show releases publicly should tags still be used? Does all information regarding leaked episodes need to go into tags, including things like “best episode I’ve ever seen” and “that ending/that twist was amazing”? What other things should be in place? Should the text in a post before the spoiler announce the topic of the content within spoiler (e.g. “discussion about the leaked trailer below”)?

The consensus we come to will not become rules on the forum, and they will not be moderated. However, they should still be used, as a courtesy to other members.

In my opinion, anything about an episode that has not been aired should need the tag.

An example for me was the 'Spoils of War' episode of GoT. People were going on and on about how great of an episode this one was out of no where (4th episode of the season, not the finale or anything) which skyrocketed my expectations. The entire episode, I'm sitting there, waiting for something epic to happen and once it began, I already knew what was likely to happen which ruined the surprise. Now with the leak for this coming week's episode, I've already heard [pwny removed spoilers ?]. No plot spoliers came out of this (yet), but it ruins some of the suspense.

I'll leave it at that. I've already went back and forth too much in the GoT thread and will let others get their opinions in.

My only comment would be to encourage people including a tag of what episode you need to have watched in order to safely view. For example, instead of

GoT S7 E6

A post in the Game of Thrones thread should read:

Spoilers S7E6

Is gonna be lit

This will prevent overuse of the spoiler tag leading to people clicking on something they may think is innocuous and getting a nasty surprise.

To be honest spoiler info from bootleg streams sucks.

I can understand when the books are ahead and those people want somewhere to discuss, but when you can't wait 7 days and so we end up with pages of "spoiler" after "spoiler" it's killing the discussion for everyone else.

Personally I think it's really bad to discuss an episode or a movie before it airs in the US. It ruins the thread for people that haven't seen the episode and just creates chaos. We should create a brand new thread for the spoilers. Then we can talk openly without spending ten pages on nonsense.

We are dividing topics up with this nonsense and chasing people away in anger.

That would be the best case scenario for me. I was fine with using the spoiler tag as a compromise, but I still would be avoiding the thread in fear of something slipping. That way the people who watch the leak can discuss without having to tag everything they say, and the live watchers can still go on discussing the season. If I knew how to like something, I'd send one your way!
