2017 Special Teams Watch

Special teams coordinator Mike Priefer said battles are close at both kicker and at punter, with Ryan Quigley competing against rookie Taylor Symmank. Priefer intends to use all four preseason games to make a decision.

Priefer: “I would like to have both punters and both kickers go all the way through to get as many attempts as we can to make sure we’re making the most informed decision with the most data available.”

Zimmer: "Quigley’s probably been more consistent. Symmank gets a little longer shots but he’s not as consistent, with the directional punting especially. But he also bombs them. So, I thought Quigley punted good (at Buffalo). If Symmank’s outkicking the coverage, then a big bomb is not any good.”

The Vikings knew it would be difficult replacing the departed Cordarrelle Patterson on kickoff returns. They might not have known it would be this much of a struggle.

Kickoff returns were a disaster against the Seahawks. Rookie Rodney Adams had two attempts for a 17-yard average and lost a fumble. Rookie Stacy Coley had one return for 17 yards after an ill-advised decision to run the ball out from 6 yards deep in the end zone. And Jerick McKinnon had one return for 10 yards.

“We had a couple of miscues in the return game, which affected us,’’ said Vikings coach Mike Zimmer.

Symmank landed 4/5 punts inside the 20, I'll take that.

Plus, I'd rather deal with some growing pains and keep the guy with the better leg, and potential.

I went to HS with Taylor and then college at Tech, so I'm pulling for him and hopefully he makes the squad. He does have a massive leg as you said. He can be a kickoff specialist as well.

The Vikings made their decision to go with veterans at all three spots. Kai Forbath won the kicking job over Marshall Koehn. Ryan Quigley won the punter job over Taylor Symmank. Veteran running back Jerick McKinnon won the return man job over rookies Stacy Coley and Rodney Adams.

The tightest of all those races was at kicker, where a missed extra point by Koehn in the preseason finale against Miami likely made the difference, according to special teams coordinator Mike Priefer, in winning or losing the kicker job.

Priefer: “It was really, really close. If Marshall doesn’t miss that PAT, it’s going to be a very difficult decision the next day. That kind of sealed it for him, unfortunately. He didn’t hit it well, it was a good snap, good hold, great protection. It was too bad for him. He’s a good kid, worked hard. I think he made Kai Forbath a better kicker. Talking to Kai, that competition really helped him perform at a higher level than he may have performed just by himself. It was a good summer for those guys. At the end of the day, you’ve got to make your PATs, you’ve got to make the makeable field goals. I know a lot of people think a 25-yard field goal is a chip shot. There is no chip shots in the league; I’ve said that before. You’ve got to be consistent no matter what type of kick, whether it’s a PAT or a 19- or 20-yard field goal or a 55-yard field goal. At the end of the day, we felt like Kai hit the ball more consistent, he was going to be the more consistent performer for us. Hopefully he can do that and be a good kickoff guy for us, which we feel he can.”

In the end, it was Forbath’s accuracy that won the job for him because Koehn had the superior kickoff leg.

I don't like McKinnon returning kicks but it's become such a meaningless play, as long as he doesn't fumble and/or wind up behind the 20 yard line too often, I'm fine with him there. Would rather see Sherels returning kicks.

im struggling to understand why MN kickers are so bad at extra points.

Jerick did NOT want to take a knee in the end zone. He was determined to bring the ball out no matter how deep it was.

I think, similar to Patterson, Priefer's given him the green light to take it out whenever. Which means Jet needs to work on his recognition.

Mike Priefer is eventually going to be a good head coach, with his coordinators running offense & defense

Yup, I've always believed the same since he got here.

Maybe this sounds strange but he looks and sounds like a head coach during his midweek interviews.

He needs to run. He was to hesitant and indecisive when he brought the ball out. The one time he ran aggressively and didn't hesitate, he had a good return.
