I still don't understand the move in the first place. The XP hasn't become anymore exciting and the success rate only dropped 3% pts.

are two pt attempts up? Was that the ultimate goal?

I don't think it was ever meant to be more "exciting", but for me, it adds more strategy to the game, which is why I like it.  If an XP is missed then it's likely to lead to a future 2-pt attempt.

Has it though? Just curious to how many times this actually happens in a game situation. I guess I'd ask is adding this strategy component worthwhile? Change seemed pointless at the time and I still feel that way.

I certainly haven't done the calculations, but I do think the strategy component is worthwhile, as it adds an element to what was already otherwise a mostly "point"less play.  We've already seen it come into play for the Vikings, when Forbath missed the XP vs the Browns...it forced the Vikings to get a 2-pt conversion later to given them a 7-pt lead.

I think there have been more 2 point attempts. Mike Tomlin sent out his offense to get 2 points several times in the first quarter in the last few years. Before the change, you didn't see teams going for 2 in the first quarter. Only in the fourth quarter when it was needed to reduce total number of scores required to catch up.

As far as making the play more exciting, I personally don't see it as any more exciting to watch a kick that is 15 yards longer. I still skip forward on the DVR and look at the score on the other side to see if the kick was made or missed. There is little fun in watching the play. When it is missed I often go back to see what happened.

When teams line up to go for two I keep watching. Only to the extent there are more two point conversions was the play made any more exciting.

Moving the extra point out has absolutely made the play more exciting. Before moving it, the extra point was an after thought, even late in the game. Since the rule change, everyone who has seen their kicker miss an extra point now has that thought enter the back of their mind. You watch it more closely, cross your fingers, and it’s something you actually pay attention to, especially late, during close games

Exciting isn't the word I'd use. Maybe gut wrenching with Forbath. It would be more exciting to me if teams went for two every time, which is statistically the better decision. A team like the Vikes might benefit going for two more often given that  Forbath has been erratic and have a mobile QB in Keenum/Teddy.

I always cross my fingers when Forbath kicks the extra point!?

The Vikings enter Week 10 with a punt coverage group that ranks No. 2 in return yards allowed and No. 4 in return average allowed; punter Ryan Quigley also has zero touchbacks on 44 punts. Continuously refusing to give up hidden yardage on special teams is making it even tougher for opposing offenses to produce against the Vikings defense. Speaking of hidden yardage, punt returner Marcus Sherels is averaging 10.8 yards per return, which ranks fifth in the NFL and is providing the offense with a boost before they take the field. Kai Forbath has also been a gem for the Vikings, converting 21 of 22 field goal tries, which includes a perfect nine of nine mark on field goals of 40 yards. This consistency on the part of the field goal team is giving the defense more cushion on the scoreboard and is also helping the Vikings in the field position game.

ST has been fantastic this year. Only gripe is the Kick Return game. We've been awful, though not having McKinnon back there probably helps. I do miss Patterson, he brought excitement to a play that has otherwise become uneventful.

I will admit it, I had a huge love for Patterson and begged for us to resign him because of his return game and slight improvement on the offensive side. But seeing us this year not having to try and force someone into the offense because of the "weapon" threat actually is helping us I think. Our biggest mistake of the year came of a gadget play.

Would have loved to see Patterson end up signed as just a KR specialist like the way we have Sherels as a PR but there was no way he would ever take the pay just to stay here for that.

Once we put Sherels back there during the Baltimore game, I feel we at least improved to being average. Numbers still aren't great (2 returns 44 yards), but it's at least decent. Starting position on those two was the 17 and 22.

  • 2 weeks later...

Had the block counted, it would have been the third of the game for Forbath. He had an extra point blocked after Minnesota’s first TD in the first quarter and a 53-yard field goal attempt deflected in the third quarter. Forbath did make a 36-yard field goal with 3:42 left in the game to close the scoring. Since joining the Vikings last November, he’s 39 of 43 on field-goal attempts but just 34 of 42 on extra points. A defender can’t line up over the center on a field-goal attempt. While Forbath couldn’t say for sure the Lions violated that rule, he said some teammates “pretty visibly’’ saw that they did.

Forbath: “They’re not allowed to hit Kevin (McDermott, the snapper), and they came up right up the middle and he was on his butt, so clearly they did something that they didn’t call."
