Charles Omenihu or Joe Jackson

I’m a Joe Jackson fan myself, tools are there. Just needs the coaching. With Omenihu personally, I see a 3-4 DE who needs to work on leverage and strength still for that role but I don’t see the chops to be a 4-3 DE. He tested well but watching him play I don’t quite see it.

Bosa was a level of pass rusher as a freshman that Allen didn't become until a senior when he should have already been in the NFL. Yall get too wild in April lol

That has nothing to do with how well they will do in the pros

That won't be Allen's fault...if he goes to a team who decides to use him more off the ball than pass rushing. Sounds like a coaching/scheme issue the player can't control. He proved last yr with NFL coaching he can take his gm to another level rushing the passer. Any team that won't continue to develop his skill set is wasting his talent. That includes our 49ers...if we were to draft him.

I gotta agree. I don't think it's a fair comp that Allen is Lawson. Lawson was a pure pass rush specialist asked to become a coverage linebacker. At NC State, he was originally a poor 4-3 OLB who was converted to 4-3 DE. His first step and speed coupled with wide angles to avoid physical contact was his game. He was able to put together some good seasons at NC State with Mario Williams as the other end. The senior bowl and insane combine made many overlook the concerns with his skinny frame and lack of play strength. The 49ers then drafted him as a 3-4 OLB. The leagues offensive linemen were further advanced and his pass rush that was predicated on pure athleticism never translated. So he struggled as a pass rusher while at the same time spent his time developing as a cover linebacker. If the comp was simply a snapshot of what Lawson ultimately became, Allen is much better in every aspect of being a pure coverage linebacker right now. Projecting career arcs from a collegiate base, Burns seems like a better candidate for the comparison than Allen.

I'm getting a kick out of how the predraft process has caused so many people to shy away from Jachai Polite. Somebody is going to get a top 15-20 pick in the 2nd or 3rd round. I hope it's the Rams. Yes, he needs to find the right weight to maximize his speed/burst and strength. Yes, he needs to mature. But there's no teaching the pass rushing gifts he has, and he's not a guy who just relies on the gifts. There are a lot of impressive technical and mental aspects to his rush game. The scary thing is that if a team corrects his false step out of the two-point stance, he's going to be even more explosive/quick to the corner. And there's no doubting that the kid is going to give you 110% on the field. The effort is there. I see a DeMarcus Lawrence-like talent.

Jordan Brailford vs Carl Granderson

Austin Bryant vs Joe Jackson

Oshane Ximines vs Maxx Crosby

Zach Allen vs Charles Omenihu

Darryl Johnson Jr. vs Justin Hollins

Who would you rather have?

- Brailford would be a nice little "low expectation, 3rd down pass rush guy"

- Jackson probably did more with less around him, still a work in progress

- Ximines may have maxed out athletically, Crosby has a world of upside

- Zach Allen all day, more polish, better overall football player, has impact on run game as well as pass rush

- Johnson Jr all day, he is a poor mans Brian Burns IMO, his athleticism, bend and lean are all on par with Burns for a bargain basement price.

Also I'd add:

John Cominsky vs Anthony Nelson

- I'd personally take Cominsky just because of the tremendous physical upside and the discounted price comparted to what you would have to play for Nelson

Polite just didn't overly impress me when I watched him and his testing is sort of confirmation bias for me (although he does look more explosive than his numbers suggest).

I agree with @jebrick that Polite's best role is as a designated rusher. Role-wise, my comp for him is Shaquille Barrett. His best role, particularly early on in his career, is to rotate in on passing downs on teams who like to flex their starting rushers inside on long downs. I value him is a 3rd rounder.

I've noticed Florida edge rushers do this thing I don't like and is very uncommon in the NFL: beating college tackles by sprinting past them and dipping their shoulder without using their hands. It seems like the vast majority of NFL starting tackles are too experienced and too strong to get beat this way. It's also why I didn't have Derek Barnett rated as high when he came out.

I player I like more than Polite who I think will have a similar role early on is Georgia's DeAndre Walker. Although I think Walker has a better chance to become an entrenched starter than Polite so I value him in the 2nd round.

If they weren’t brothers they probably wouldn’t be compared to each other.

Since we’re talking about Joey though there’s this perception that he only performs well against average or worse tackles.

I gotta disagree with that - they play very similarly too. Hand work, the quick push/pull move, the swipe and dip - identical. I do think Joey is probably slightly better as well, though.

Is Ferrell that much better than Joe Jackson?

No, but I still love Ferrell. It's not a slight to Ferrell to say that IMO.

Joe Jackson has more raw potential to dominate, but Ferrell has excellent technique and counter moves as a pass rusher. Ferrell has become underrated around here recently. He's only a tick below Bosa IMO.
