Rome Eternals

Offense

Surprise!  We welcome in Louisiana who is hell bent on defeating us this week and is already touting their three corners.  Lukic already started hyping his CB this week and that just gives our passing game more motivation toward come out and excel

Not let's be real first, Louisiana does have three nice corners.  However, Eli Apple is turrible and they normally don't even dress a fifth corner and if they do its Josh Jackson who Marquise Goodwin took for torch city a couple times this past Monday..  Also Louisiana doesn't possess much in terms of pass rush up front with JPP and Sheard so we are gonna use the strength of our offensive line in our tackles to eliminate the one thing Louisiana likes to do which is play cover one and blitz.

We are gonna open up with this 5 wide formation as Louisiana is gonna spend a lot of time telling you how they are gonna stop Todd Gurley.  We're gonna run hurry up the whole first half using mostly this formation (note we will bring in RBs tes when needed). This will accomplish a couple things.  1. It should get us some quick scores early against I'm assuming a blitz heavy stop the run scheme and 2. It will wear down the edges for our second half strategy

As an extra added wrinkle in the first half.  We are gonna run in trubisky at qb and Gurley at RB with four wide three or four times.  With the d keyed in and alert on Gurley now in the game early, we are gonna run some read options which should get Mitchell a couple chunk runs.

We are gonna target Apple and Jackson /safety.a lot.  If Eli is on Goodwin, we are going to incorporate some reverses to take advantage of his subpar tackling and lighter box.  The only CB we won't really be throwing at is Harris as we are putting some good wr in the slot and forcing some boundary corners to do new things if they are matched up by player.  If not the interior wr are gonna go bonkers. Brees can put the ball where he needs to and we feel we will have the time to allow all our wr to get open

Second half formation (obviously not every play, other formations sprinkled in)

Brees

o line

Juju

Edelman, same side of field as Juju

Gurley

Howard

Reed same side as Howard

With this formation we are gonna keep our two wr on the skinny side of the field.  The inner “slot wr “ is gonna be Schuster. He's running deep down the middle to take the over one safety away.  Edelman on the outside is running a slant directly at the underneath safety. We will have Gurley go in motion to see if we can get Barr or trevathian manned up on him, if not he returns to the backfield and Brees will know he has those match ups on our tes.

This formation allows us to attack the wide side of the field with our athletic tes and Gurley matched up with lb and s.  We like our match ups here. Barr and trevathian will especially be targeted as they have been awful in coverage this year.  This formation also allows us to do some power running and tosses to the wide side of the field. We know we have the best RB in the league and we plan on giving him about 20 touches in the second half via the pass and run against a gassed line

We feel like we can accomplish our goals this week relying on Smith and ramcyk studding it on the outside.  While Linder has been great at center, the guards are gonna get his help if one is struggling. With the five wide it is going to be difficult for the jizz to blitz without blowing their load in the back 7

As always Brees has control of offense and will audible for zone coverage to seams floods and screens

Tl/Dr.  Air raid early with some surprise wrinkles.  Second half power football while using our athletic tes and Gurley against their lb

Defense

This week we welcome in the impressive duo of Tom Brady and Ezekiel Elliot.  Luckily we also welcome in perhaps the worst offensive line in the bdl

It's been shown time and time again the way to beat Brady is the pressure him up to the middle, move him off his spot and throw off his timing routes.

So we are going to be playing press coverage all over the field and sending a blitzing lb up a gap on about 75 percent of the plays run in the base three wide formation.  We feel like we can do this with the talent we have on the outside. Amukamara will get Watkins or Thomas depending on which is outside. Jackson is gonna be running speed for speed with Lockett while nrc gets the slot.  If that's Lockett so be it with Jackson taking Watkins.

One of Louisiana major weapons is Zack Ertz so we are taking our physical corner in Marlon Humphrey putting him near the line and having him shadow ertz all day.  Humphrey is a good tackler and with him in the box we feel we won't lose much in run defense. The non blitzing lb will cover the RB out of the backfield and the Thompson will be playing centerfield. He will help nrc over the top if Thomas or Watkins is in the slot

Up front we like our line to basically be able to stop the running game against their o line as McGovern is the only really good run blocker they have.  Elliot is obviously awesome but with Humphrey up close to the line and the front six we have, we feel we can bottle him up.

Each play, our meat wall DT are gonna eat up three blockers allowing lve or moseley (mostly moseley) to hit the gap and get right up in bradys face.  If they start to keep a RB in the non blitzing lb will play robber underneath the cut off crossing routes and will have the ability to occasionally blitz themselves. With center and McGovern not being good pass blockers at all we feel this strategy can work. We also expect our edges to get some good push against their meh tackles

We will rotate in our other lineman pretty consistently to keep everyone fresh with our offense running hurry up. Jones is dime corner,

With Brady it's ignorant to play much zone but we will throw that in a handful of times just to not be too predictable

Tl/Dr.  Internal blitz in Tommy's face, press coverage outside, throw off timing and trust our dline against their o line

Louisiana Jazz

Motivation:

Most importantly, this is our chance at revenge against the bizzbowl winners. After a 12-1-1 season last year and the first seed, we were on course to dominate the playoffs end up in the bizzbowl. At least until we suffered 4 injuries to our OL in 2 weeks and as a result could only field 4 full-time OL against Rome in the semi-final which ended in defeat. Although we have injuries on the OL this season too, we're a much deeper unit and we're ready to get back at Rome in front of what will be a raucous Louisiana Superdome.

Offense:

Personnel Change – We welcome Kyle Rudolph into our line-up for the first time who will slot in as our TE2 alongside Zach Ertz, while Tyler Lockett returns to bench with his role slightly diminished.

Firstly, we intend to play Ertz and Rudolph extensively both in-line, but also splitting them out wide and in the slot quite often. We expect them to be covered by the combination of Mosley and Vander Esch. If Rome tries to put either of their safeties on them or even Matt Milano, their LB 3 – we want to point out that each of these guys is 6’0 or less, while Rudolph and Ertz are 6’6 and 6’5 respectively. These are significant mismatches and Brady will look to hit them both and often as they take advantage of the substantial size difference.

Once Rome adjusts and puts both LBers on the TEs, we intend to gradually shift them wider. Our intention is to draw the LBs away from the centre of the field and eliminate the threat of a blitzer. This will result in a large number of 4 man rushes, which we’re comfortable in dealing with as Tomlinson and Brockers offer little in the way of pass-rush and the only major concern we have is Dunlap on the line to deal with.

Thomas and Watkins will play as our two outside receivers, but we intend to give Lockett some snaps to work over the middle of the field and also as a deep threat. We also intend to have White on the field for a significant number of snaps, especially when Lockett comes on. In particular, we plan to have White run a lot of quick outs and even wheel routes towards where Lockett was lining-up. This is because Lockett will either draw the CB deep along with safety help over the top, opening up this area, or if he runs across on slants towards the middle, it will draw away attention from the short-outside area.

The running game will generally be behind the guards and in particular we’ll look to target the edge of Rome’s defensive line between guard & tackle. In particular, we want to run behind McGovern and Massie and towards Dunlap on the left edge of the defensive line to ensure that we can gas him in the passing game. We don’t mind Dunlap being able to make an impact on a few runs early, because we know that at his size, his endurance will be affected as we continue to target him. Dunlap tends to accumulate his sacks in the 2nd half of matches, so we know that if we can tire him out early, he won’t have the same impact as usual.

Lastly, Michael Thomas will operate out of the slot quite often too. No-one has the physical profile out of the Rome CB’s to successful jam him at the LOS often enough to prevent him from working over the middle. In particular, as we shift out the TEs and open up the middle of the field, we’ll have Brady target him often. To ensure this is effective, we’ll have Lockett and Watkins play on the outside and if Rome wish to bring a man forward to help shut down the middle of the field, we’ll have Brady air it out to Lockett or Watkins on the outside, whoever draws the single coverage, when we’re in our empty backfield sets.

Redzone:

With 3 viable receiving threats on the roster now at TE, we intend to shift into a 3TE set quite often to take advantage of their size and endzone ability. This will generally be in a line-up with Elliott at RB, the three TEs and Thomas at wide-out.

On these plays we'll mix it up with run plays and heave play-action, looking to hit whichever of the TE's is able to gain a little bit of separation and or go after whoever isn’t being covered by Mosley or Vander Esch. In particular, we’ll look to line-up Rudolph and Ertz on the same side and draw across both of those linebackers and run counters behind the other side of the offense, in particular behind McGovern and Massie.

As a bonus I drew up this play:

52f5856bde.png

This is an example of what we'll be running, with Herndon getting an initial chip in or hitting whoever would be in coverage on him, Brady faking the handoff to Elliott who then runs a route in the flat and Brady floats it over to him.

Defense:

Our defensive game plan is going to rely heavily on the ability of our corners and secondary to win in man against a receiving group which is lacking of any dynamic playmakers.

Firstly, Micah Hyde’s role will vary depending whether or not Goodwin is on the field. Although not a great receiver, we don’t want to run the risk of Goodwin burning us deep with Brees throwing him and as such, Hyde will occupy a deeper role on the snaps when Goodwin is on the field. When Goodwin is not on the field, the idea is to shift Hyde closer to the LOS and allow him to track after Gurley in coverage. Where Hyde is deeper, Trevathan will be tasked with following Gurley around. Chung for the most part will be tasked with covering Jordan Reed at TE.

We have complete faith in our secondary to take care of the Rome offense in their individual man matchups. Gilmore & Fuller will reprise their roles on the right and left of the defense respectively, presumably matching up against Smith-Schuster and Goodwin/Cooper. Harris will follow Edelman around in the slot and erase him from the match.

Barr’s duty will be split between sitting in zone in the centre of the field as our most athletic linebacker, as well as blitzing on occasion or serving as a 5th pass-rusher – in particular through the middle to try and create some push against the interior near Casey who figures to be double teamed, and avoid presenting Brees a clean interior to step-up in and hit his targets deep. Additionally, Barr will cede some snaps to Dee Ford as a standing specialist rusher too.

The defensive line will see some rotations, namely Ford and Gregory picking up snaps on pass-rushing downs for Sheard and JPP who on occasion may slide in, while Hankins will rotate in reasonably often on earlier downs to bolster our run D, with Richardson either coming off or sliding to the right.

Well, you've gone 5 wide and took Gurley off the field in your base formation. I didn't talk about stopping the run and you didn't plan on running it so...

Also I'm pretty comfortable with Apple and Jackson as CB 4 and CB 5. Apple is a low end BDL CB #2, high end CB #3 and has played solidly this season from what I've seen and by all accounts I've read.

Also since you've gone with putting a CB on Ertz, I'm guessing it'll now be Amukamara or Jackson on him? 5'8 Robey Coleman against either Watkins or Thomas will be fun.

You obviously didn't read my second half plan.  Kudos

We'll just throw janoris on ertz.  Same idea without having to change the plan at all

5'10 Jenkins on 6'5 Ertz? Ok.

Also I did read the 2nd half plan, but what am I meant to say? There's nothing to really say apart from we're going to stop the run. I said we'll have Hankins come in on run downs and will shift Richardson to DE. IF you go two TE, we'll have 3 LBs and Patrick Chung in the box.

Richardson - Hankins - Casey - Pierre-Paul
Burfict - Trevathan - Barr - Chung

Good luck running against that 8 man box.

Yes it's fine with me.  Blitzing right up the gut against that line shouldn't give you much time to do jump balls

And will your outside CB be coming to the opposite side of the field I imagine?  That's putting a lot of pressure on those lb against Reed Howard and Gurley with out any help

I really don't like Rome trying to use this 5 WR formation for most of the 1st half.  I think they outsmarted themselves.  Because while the Jazz don't have a great DL, Rome doesn't have a great OL.  I think Brees gets harassed more than Rome is expecting.

On the other side, I think Louisiana has an offense that compliments Brady very well.

I think Louisiana gets up early and is able to just grind out some long drives and eat up clock.

I get what Rome was trying to do, But Gurley is more of a threat than their 5th WR.

Jizz grind out the clock more and I see Rome going 3&out a lot in this matchup early on, I don't see them recovering after a bad 1st half.

I don't thinking people are getting this.  They're one of and two corners are playing the boundary against my 4 and five.  While my 1 and three are getting their 4 and 5 corners in the slot

He literally says his dudes are staying outside on their side of the line.  He has no answer for two te sets in the second half besides ehh 8 in the box and leave these crappy coverage backers one on one on Reed Howard and Gurley

I get it.  I just don't think taking Gurley off the field for most of the first half and allowing their DL to pass rush freely against a subpar BDL OL is a good strategy.  I don't know if your guys can get open before their DL gets to Brees on a regular basis being as they have no concern of defending the run.

I also think his two TE sets with Zeke will be able to wear your D down and play a ball control game.
