This isn't an if or but award. What happened, happened. Trying to make excuses for all 5 of his turnovers is pointless.

No one is saying he still can't win the MVP award, but having 5 turnovers in a losing effort certainly doesn't help your case. There are still 5 games to go. A lot can happen.

I'm not the one making excuses here....

Brees fumbles that. Manning Fumbles that. Brady fumbles that. Every QB fumbles those. You have a future defensive HoFer that destroys a injured interior line from the blindside. Mahomes did everything by the book there.

You aren't?

I get all of that but he still turned the ball over. Some turnovers are fluky too. Like if a ball bounces off a helmet up for an interception. Yes its not the QBs fault but that interception still counts. So I get your point but Mahomes still fumbled. Brees on the other hand is having the type of season where the ball is just bouncing his way. Im not sure how many "possible turnover plays" Brees had that was dropped by a defender or the defender didnt recover a fumble but Brees is just having a carefree season where he isnt turning the ball over.

The only reason they were in that game was because of his play. The 2 sack fumbles happen to pretty much every QB in history in that situation. Donald is a future hall of famer for a reason. And you can't really play that if game. Who knows what would have happened because it created different situational play. If the refs don't gift the Rams 13 points then the Chiefs win by 2 scores regardless of Mahomes turnovers....we can play that game forever.

The refs "gifted" the Rams 13 points? Put the crackpipe down.

See the thing is that. Everyone expected the saints to be great. Everyone thought the Chiefs were a 5 win team at best. That has to count.

KC over/under was 8, while NO was 9.5.

People thought NO was going to be good, but no one thought the Chiefs would be a 5 win team. In fact, a lot of people thought their offense was going to be elite. It was the defense that everyone thought would hold them back (it is still bad, but defense doesn't seem to matter in 2018).

By single handedly giving the opposing teams 14 points immediately along with another 3 turnovers, at least one of which they definitely scored off of, can't remember the other 2.  If Mahomes didn't turn the ball over 5 times they win the game by 3 scores, if not more.

There's....a lot of bad logic here. We lost by one score. His turnovers gave 14 points, as you say, yet without them we'd win by at least 3 scores? I don't think so. There's a domino effect to removing those turnovers, first of all. Had we just gone 3 and out instead, for instance, the Rams still get a chance to score. It's possible both our drives stall, the Rams still score TDs, and we still lose by 3 in the end. That and the math just doesn't add up there.

But the bigger point is, you can't say we win without his mistakes without acknowledging that we get destroyed without his greatness. Maybe we win without his turnovers. We definitely don't win without his TDs. Had Alex Smith been our QB, for instance, we probably turn the ball over several times less. We also probably score several fewer TDs as well.

You can't just say the loss is his fault. It was a close game only because of the great things he did.

Does the narrative have any weight on who deserves the award? If so I think Mahomes edges out Brees. The things he's doing at his age are truly special, but I guess you could say the same about Brees..

Yes and no, possibly maybe. There are 4 QBs on pace to set top 10 season quarterback ratings, including Brees at #1 and Mahomes at #5.

And we have 4 QBs on pace to make top 10 all time single season accuracy, including Brees braking last year's record by an incredible 4.4%

We've also only ever seen 9 5000 yard passing seasons, 5 of which were Brees, and this year we are on pace to have 4 more (including #2-4 all time), none of which are Brees, doubling the current number of non-Drew Brees 5000 yard season QBs.

And these aren't just all the same 4 QBs in each category. For passer rating it's Brees, Mahomes, Rivers, and Goff. For completion % it's Brees, Ryan, Cousins, and Mariota (tied at 10th). For yards it's Ryan, Roethlisberger, Mahomes, and Goff. That's 8 different QBs across 12 different spots on pace to enter into the top 10 all time NFL single season Quarterback record book.

Mahomes is obviously looking like a future HoFer right now, but this could just be the way the NFL is moving as it becomes more and more offense oriented. 2018 is the greatest year for QBs in NFL history by far, but it might just be the start.
