KC_Guy
Read an article today about the Chiefs and how they may be one and done due to their core crew melting away over the years. Didn't really believe it - so I had to take a look forward to the 2020 roster, based on the current contract situation. Tackles 2021 - 72 Fisher, Eric2020 - 71 Schwartz, Mitchell Guards/Centers 2021 - 66 McKenzie, KahlilXXXX - 67 Murray, JamesXXXX - 62 Reiter, AustinXXXX - 77 Wylie, Andrew (ERFA) Quarterbacks 2020 - 15 Mahomes, Patrick II Running Backs 2020 - 27 Hunt, Kareem2018 - 32 Ware, Spencer 2020 - 31 Williams, Darrell Tight Ends 2018 - 84 Harris, Demetrius2021 - 87 Kelce, Travis Wide Receivers XXXX - 19 Kemp, Marcus2019 - 11 Robinson, Demarcus 2020 - 14 Watkins, Sammy Defensive Tackles 2021 - 91 Nnadi, Derrick Defensive Ends Linebackers 2022 - 53 Hitchens, Anthony2020 - 50 Houston, Justin2020 - 92 Kpassagnon, Tanoh2020 - 56 Niemann, Ben2021 - 44 O’Daniel, Dorian2021 - 57 Speaks, Breeland Cornerbacks 2021 - 39 Smith, Tremon 2020 - 35 Ward, Charvarius Safeties 2022 - 29 Berry, Eric 2020 - 49 Sorensen, Daniel SpecialistsXXXX - 7 Butker, Harrison2020 - 2 Colquitt, Dustin2021 - 41 Winchester, James In italics those players I think will return on a reasonable contract. On offense, the core building blocks will still be around. The only big name missing obviously is Tyreek Hill. The replacements they found for the OL are proving their worth, and McKanzie is obviously a guy they trust in for the future. Defense, even after the last draft, is a different story. LB and S look ok, but DL and CB need serious attention. However, the Chiefs will have two drafts to fill some of those positions, and the cap should be ok to bring in a few more guys. After 2020, with Mahomes, Hunt, Schwartz and some others (including high priced guys like Watkins, Schwartz, Houston) hitting free agency, that may be a different story. Guess then the team will have to rebuild. But 2018 - 2019 - 2020 ... that's a three year window when they should be able to compete with the top of the crop. kingseanjohn
This is one reason why I really didn't want to trade a couple picks for Patrick Peterson or anyone else. The draft this year is super deep on defense and somewhat WR (which iirc all WR will be FA by 2021). This is a great year to have an additional 2nd and I just hope that we aren't only trading up for players. If we can somehow turn our 1st into more picks I'd be all for it. Jakuvious
Really, that's just a silly premise for an article. If you go to overthecap and click to 2020 on any team's roster, you'll see it get depleted. We actually have more players under contract at that point than any of the other top tier teams this year (NE, LAR, LAC, NO, etc.) I actually can't find a team so far with more guys under roster in 2020 than us. kingseanjohn
It still helps to see where we will likely be looking in FA and the draft in the next year or two. It's harder at two years, but we know that Tyreek should get an extension next year. It'll be interesting to see who we let walk and hope for a comp pick. My guess for next year is that we re-sign Ford, Harris, Sherman, Devey, Jenkins, Reiter, Kemp, and Butker. I could see us keeping Bailey, Ware, Williams, Morse, Conley, Kemp, and Nelson if the deal is team friendly. It's really Nelson's last chance for a payday so I really wonder if he'll take a team friendly deal. Ideally we draft (in no order atm) DLx2, OLB, CB, S, WR, TE. We currently have 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th round draft picks and may get a 6th or 7th comp for Terrance Mitchell.
RedGold
It’s also pretty silly for the simple fact that we have great cap flexibility over the next few years. Sure it’s likely we don’t keep everyone, but if you keep Hunt, Hill, and Kelce(already under contract) it will be pretty easy to find guys to replace the production we lose on offense. Hunt, Hill, Jones, and Fuller should all fit into the books. Still 50/50 on signing Ford long term, i wouldn’t rather eat the cap and franchise him a year. That's basically what I wanted to say. They have the core under contract until 2020 already now. A few resignings and reasonable drafts and the Chiefs should be able to run with the top of the crop for two more years. After that it will become difficult capwise to keep all of the current top contributors.
onejayhawk
It's obvious in hindsight that this is exactly the situation that the FO intended. This whole off-season, draft, and season have been built around securing a core. Everything else has been chinking the cracks. J
