OFFENSE - 3WR/TE/RB - Single Back Set

Looking for a balanced attack this week against a Portland defense that lacks multiple impact players.  Wentz will lead the charge with a projected 55:45 pass:run ratio, as we think we can keep the chains moving on the ground and through the air.

We’ll go 3 headed monster on the ground with Johnson and Brieda splitting about 80% of snps, with the balance going to Henry.  We will look to establish the run game early against a less than stellar D Line and force a safety into the box. We will mix in some RPO as the game progresses to freeze Portland’s LBs and prevent them from committing.

In the pass game, we will mostly avoid Trufant and have Wentz diagnose singles, looking for Sanders or Thomas to in their matchup.  Expect Landry to be fed slants all day, we think he has a plus matchup out of the slot and we see him moving the chains consistently.  If no attention is paid to Swaim, we look to hit him up the seam.

We don’t think any special attention is needed in outside protection as Mathews nd Schwartz are more than capable of handling Portland’s EDGE rushers.  RBs will have blitz pickup/outlet duties on 3rd downs.

DEFENSE - 34 Hybrid Nickel

Pat Mahomes has been stellar this year, on his way to NFL MVP, and the centerpiece of the Portland offense.  We look to slow him down by showing him various fronts and looks, not allowing him to leave the pocket and forcing him into predictable passing situations, allowing our pass rushers to pressure him into mistakes.

While Pat has a plethora of weapons to distribute the ball to IRL, we feel he has subpar options here.  We are going to play man on Portland’s WRs, with Rhodes on Parker, Howard on Boyd and Norman on Bryant. Our CBs are all capable of handling their opponents in single coverage, but we are going to play a cover 2 shell to offer help over the top from Randall and Fitz.  With the pass game blanketed, we look to force Mahomie to throw into double coverage often, allowing our CBs to make plays on the ball, knowing they have help over the top.

We don’t respect the Portland run game very much and as much as Kareem Hunt has opened things up for Mahomes with the Chiefs, we don’t see the same effect here from McCoy and Barber.  If these two can consistently move the chains against our D Line I would be surprised.

With 5 in coverage against Portland’s WRs, McKinney will have read/react over Hooper, dropping into coverage on him or if Hooper stays in, working as SPY on Mahomes off RPO or to contain him on passing plays.  We will dial up delayed blitzes from him or Floyd often on long passing downs.

Motivation:

  • Beat Gotham and don't give Louisiana the no.1 pick.

Portland Offensive Gameplan:

  • Establish the run early, move the pocket to keep Mahomes clean, run the ball and commit to it, use play action to take shots down the field. Expect a run heavy offense in the 1st half with the focus on establishing the running game and letting Mahomes pick apart Gotham.

The Passing Game:

  • Mahomes has established himself as a top 2 QB in the NFL so we feel he can more or less do anything asked of him, Mahomes will be be allowed to audible and adjust plays as he sees fit and we'll focus on getting deep against a Gotham secondary featuring some of the best in BDL, we feel we can beat them deep with our big play weapons.
  • Gotham's pass rush featuring J.J Watt and former owl Robert Quinn is a solid one, however we feel our o-line is up to the task of keeping Mahomes protected. If we can't get anything going deep we'll attack the middle of the field specifically targeting Damarious Randall and Howard in coverage, Davante Adams will be our no.1 WR and will be featured heavily and with Rhodes more than likely covering him he should be able to win that matchup.
  • Boyd will be our slot WR and he'll see quite a few targets this week, he'll play outside in 2 WR sets and in the slot in 3 wide. In 3 and 4 WR sets Sanu will be the no.3 and Ross will be the no.4, we'll take a few deep shots to Boyd+Adams to try and take advantage of their big play ability.
  • Austin Hooper will get the nod at TE and will be a do it all TE but he'll mostly be limited to being a check down option for Mahomes and a blocker when needed, he'll get a bunch of targets since we feel he's a mismatch and is finally coming into his own this season after being a 5-50-1 guy for most of his career. Austin Hooper will be used a decent amount in this game as he'll be tasked with helping as a blocker and being a checkdown option.
  • We'll feature our RBs in the passing game a bit to keep Gotham guessing, Peyton Barber will be our no.1 RB and despite what his stats suggest he is a functional RB who can do all the things required of him, we'll split the touches about 70:30 to keep Barber fresh and healthy and get McCoy some touches so he can look like his old self behind a much better o-line.

The Running Game:

  • LeSean McCoy and Barber will split carries 70:30 with Barber receiving the edge in carries and touches, we'll try and establish our running game early to help tire out Gotham's defense for later in the game, we'll leave a RB/TE in to pass protect as needed, we'll make running the ball and setting up play action a priority.

The Blocking:

  • In case of injuries, Beachum will play LT/RT, Jones will play C/G. We'll also leave a RB/TE in to pass protect or give extra attention/blocking to a pass rusher if someone proves to be a problem, most likely we'll slide extra protection to Ingram or  double team their interior lineman..

TDLR;

  • Control the LOS, win the battles in the trenches, Make plays in the redzone area, finish drives with points.

Portland Defensive Gameplan:

  • Max zone coverage to force Wentz to hold onto the ball longer so our pass rush can get after him, we'll play some man but our main focus will be shutting down Gotham's WRs.

Pass Coverage:

  • We'll be playing zone defense on 70% of the snaps with a decent amount of blitzes. Trufant will be the no.1 CB  he'll also get some help over the with whoever he's covering for a decent chunk of the game, Jimmy Smith will man the no.2 CB spot and should be able to handle whoever he is assigned to cover on the play despite what his play has indicated his name value should make up for the fact he's been terrible this year. If a WR goes into the slot the CB/Defender assigned to cover them will follow them into the slot, Brandon Carr otherwise will be the no.3 CB/Slot CB and will play in the redzone and on 3rd downs in favor of Jimmy Smith.
  • Gotham's offense boasts one of the best trio of WRs in BDL with Thomas, Sanders, Landry all more or less being overachieving slot receivers. Carson Wentz has played well this year but he's still a step behind from where he was as a sophmore and he isn't nearly as mobile.
  • Glover Quinn will be tasked with adjusting the pass coverage as needed, I'd expect my front seven should be able to put pressure on Wentz and control the LOS.
  • Telvin Smith will be the signal caller on defense and he'll make adjustments if Seoul tries something not outlined in the gameplan.  Orakpo+Smith will be able to get after Ryan along with Barrett rotating in, Short+Jones should be able to keep Gotham's inside running game in check and Pierce will rotate in with Jones on running downs/goaline situations.
  • Telvin Smith will make adjustments as the signal caller on defense as needed, we'll make sure to give equal attention to Gotham's top 3 WRs, Gotham's RBs and TEs are more or less irrelevant in the passing game so we won't give them any attention.

Run Defense:

  • Gotham's RBs aren't total garbage but Johnson is easily their best RB, I'd expect he'll get 100+ yards from scrimmage on 30-ish touches given Gotham will have to feed him the ball to try and give Wentz a running game given they have limited pass catching options besides their WRs.
  • Za'Darius Smith stepped up in a huge way 4 weeks ago with 3 sacks, he has earned a starting job opposite Orakpo and has already set/tied a career high in sacks, he'll be a big help in the run game and in getting after the QB.
  • While our focus is in defending the pass in this matchup, we won't forget about/ignore the run.

TLDR;  Win at the LOS, control their running lanes, limit their WRs, Defend the thing, cover well, keep them out of the endzone.

Gotta love the technicality of that rule.

He broke it in last week's game though, bye or not he's still injured despite the new week.

Orakpo+Smith will be able to get after Ryan

Matty Ice gives you nightmares @SwoleXmad?

Anyway, when you run a zone D, you better have the pass rush. While Short could get going vs Cann/Pouncey, I think Portland pass rush is too limited. Wentz can just keep dissecting Portland zone with Sanders or Landry, both who are pretty good at finding holes in a defense. Portland has a valiant effort on offense as I do think they can establish the run and the pass, but they made a mistake in their defensive gameplan imho.

34-30 Gotham
