If we're only getting 4 sacks in 2 years out of any of those guys, you better be looking to fire Pettine and his whole staff.

Wrong.  Look at their career numbers.  None of them are proven.  They're all going to get paid like elite pass rushers when each of them has been a specialist or off/on.  Take out the desire for that second contract and those three players are going to be serious busts.  Obviously 4 sacks is an exaggeration, but I don't think any of those three players sniff 8 sacks this coming season.

I'd be willing to bet both the Smiths get under 6 sacks, and I'd be willing to bet Flowers gets probably 4 sacks this year.

True or false: This will be the biggest FA news regarding the Packers today.

*sigh*...

Not a fan of Campbell. He was a stopgap player we signed due to injuries and then he got injured. Before he was injured, he sorely lacked the speed needed at the position and his instincts were below average. I hope he's just a rotational guy...

what are you getting at?

Za'Darius Smith averaged 4 sacks over the last 3 seasons, and somehow people are convinced that his 8+ sack season this year is going to stick.  Find me the last time a FA EDGE wasn't an overpay?  Teams overpay for pass rushers.  You rarely are going to find quality ones hit FA, and the few that do tend to get overpaid.   Olivier Vernon got 5 years, $85M coming off a 7.5 sack season.  He averaged 7.3 sacks per season in his career with Miami, and he's never hit double digit sacks with the Giants before trading him to the Browns.

I'm higher on Za'Darius than most. He'd be the one guy I'd pay a premium for because (a) he's an absolute animal, and (b) he can play both inside and out and is a perfect fit for Pettine's defense. I think he's on the rise.

Flowers comes from NE which scares me. I wouldn't pay him.

P. Smith doesn't move the needle for me either.

So, I'm with you on 2 of the 3.

No argument there. I was just stating that guys are going to get paid more regardless of merit, that's all.

Smith Sniffed 8.5 last year. Must have just been for the Benjamins. He was a rotational player in Bal.

We are all going to have to get used to these bigger numbers. Everyone wants guys for what they were signing for last year, but it just doesn't work that way. Is the player a good player, forget the money, you won't get anyone with what we, meaning the forum, are currently willing to spend.

I've mentioned my free agency "Rule of 1.33" here the last few years. It's pretty much... Take the highest number that you think a player should reasonably get then times that by 1.33 and you'll be pretty close to the actual deal.

That's my entire point.  As a predominantly pass rush specialist, he got 8.5 sacks.  People are ready to hand him the 2019 equivalent of Perry's deal when he's averaged 4.5 sacks per season.  It's just stupid to me.

I think some people don't understand how much easier it is to get sacks when you're coming in as a pass rush specialist, which is what Smith was last year.  It's like... People on this board would be willing to pay 15 million to Kyler Fackrell if he'd been on a different team and just had the season he had.

In fact... Compare  Fackrell to Smith.  In one less year, Fackrell has 3 less sacks than Z. Smith.

If I'm paying a huge pass rush deal, it's only to a player who has proven he can produce while getting paid.  Justin Houston, Cameron Wake, Terrell Suggs are the only three pass rushers I'm paying.

Yea, but these guys are dying stars. You're going to pay them for past production that you're likely not going to see again? Maybe Houston, but Wake and Suggs would have to come at a huge discount for me and I don't think you'll see either take less than $10-11m.

Granted, paying the young bucks comes with a lot of risk. No one is denying that. But you're investing your money in something that still has growth potential. Constantly using Nick Perry as the rule for why you can't sign an EDGE player to a big deal is nonsensical.

Does anyone here have a problem making Earl Thomas the highest paid safety in the NFL?  I don't!  Make it happen, Gute!

Not really. Rumor is he is asking for 30M over 2 years. Considering Safety is a need for us as well as Thomas is one of the best in that position, why not give him that 2 year deal.
