We Should Extend Scherff and The Greek Now!

Actually, the value of an all pro or near all pro guard is about the same as an all pro DT/3-4DE/NT.

I’m not sure why their value would be any different. The guards have to block the big boys in the middle. If you have a great guard, he’ll neutralize most dominant DTs on almost every play.

OL dominate the game by opening up holes for RBs, protecting QBs and neutralizing the great DL. It’s a different kind of impactful, but if Scherff dominates a DT/NT all game, that’s just as valuable as a sack from a DL.

We are going to miss the heck out of Scherff against the Texans. TWill and Scherff are the only OL on our offense who could at least come close to holding serve against a player like Watt.

How is that not valuable?

A pro bowl player at an position is extremely valuable, whether they play on the line, or anywhere else.

The bottom line is we should keep our best players. Scherff is our 2nd best OL by a mile, not retaining him could be a mistake that haunts us for years, maybe a decade.

It’s not easy to find an OL who is All-Pro caliber, it’s not easy to find any player who’s all pro caliber. Letting one walk is a mistake.

No it's not.

Aaron Donald, Fletcher Cox, Ndamukong Suh, Albert Haynesworth, JJ Watt ... all making way more than guards. In fact, they woudl scoff at Zack Martin's contract.

An offensive line can dominate a game. A guard cannot. We saw that last year. Scherff doens't make anyone on the line better. He can't play the most important offensive line position, nor the second most important. You don't need an " All Pro" caliber guard. You need two good ones.

What kind of deal would the Greek be looking for ? Clearly not JJ Watt money. Scherrf on the other hand would want Norwell money. He’s at 10 million per. Im all for resigning him but that’s a lot for a guard.

Don't forget every year the cap also goes up.  I want this guy back man, we can't afford to loose top players.

Kirk Cousins and Kendall Fuller would beg to differ

The Redskins lost Kirk Cousins. They dealt Kendall Fuller away.

It's a small but important difference.

Then start restructuring other deals to make some room.

It's not a matter of restructuring deals. It's a matter of no negotiations can begin with those players no matter what the cap situation is.

But you can start freeing up that money now. So when you can negotiate, you can give them a big lump sum up front.

Well, generally you free up money after the season by cutting dead weight (hey, Stacy McGee? Don't sign a long term lease or buy a house.). The rest you get by renegotiating contracts. Players generally don't want to think about the money side of the game when they're in the midst of the game side of the game. When the offseason rolls around, then they can focus on the dollars and cents portion.

They lost Cousins and then they lost Fuller to get Cousins' replacement.

Losing Cousins in 2018 may have been due to a choice back in June of 2016 but trading Fuller in 2018 was a direct choice in 2018.

I realize this feels a bit like semantics, but it is a different focus. Think of it as "old business vs. new business."

Oh, you mean the guys Scherff stones routinely and opens up holes for AD and last year CT when he was healthy?

Except he has literally played none of them.

Huh? Scherff plays Cox twice a year and has since he was a rookie. His rookie year he went vs Suh in his first ever NFL game vs the Dolphins and he helped pave the way for Alfred Morris to go for 121 yards.

The Rams were smart and had Donald go against Lauvao last year, that’s not Scherff’s fault, and while Lauvao didn’t do a bad job, Scherff would’ve done better.

Just out of curiosity who would replace blocking those DE's and DT's if we weren't to resign Scherff?

Another guard?

Better question: If Scherff is so good, why dont they just  move their best interior lineman to the other side? Thats why investing in a premium guard is a waste. They're too easy to scheme against.

Gotta have good across the line, not just in spots.
