3rd Quarter Mock

Recommended Posts

Retain all the staff that we can…I think that as a collective this group have done a great job both schematically and in teaching and developing our players…I have tried to look at not just going into next season but the following offseason with this mock as I believe that will be huge for us given our potential free agents and that we will have more draft ammunition.

Resign…

RB…Benny Cunningham

FB…Michael Burton

WR…Kevin White

WR…Josh Bellamy

OG…Bryan Witzmann

OC…Eric Kush

CB…Bryce Callahan

CB…Adrian Amos

P…Pat O'Donnell

LS…Patrick Scales

Cunningham is the perfect #3 back in the NFL because he does everything well as a back and is an excellent special teamer…Burton is a solid FB for when we need one…White I still feel is worth keeping around…he is still a big strong and physically talented WR and although he will never be what we wanted him to be if it’s kept simple for him he could still have his uses…Bellamy would survive a nuclear blast at Halas Hall…I don’t know what his job is in the locker room but it must be one of the most important…I expect him to continue to back up the slot and play teams…Witzmann has been a pleasant surprise after being pushed into starting action…he is a solid backup inside…Kush is another solid interior player who can step up at two different spots but I think allowing him to backup solely at centre would make sense …Callahan has been really good in the slot this year but I still feel there is a ceiling for what slots make on the open market and we should be able to bring him back…Amos doesn’t have elite playmaking ability which will diminish his market but he is a very solid run player with excellent range…I think we can retain him by cutting some guys with bigger numbers…O’Donnell and Scales are both solid on teams and continuity is never a bad thing.

RFA

TE…Ben Braunecker

OT…Rashaad Coward

DE…Roy Robertson-Harris

OLB…Isaiah Irving

S…DeAndre Houston-Carson

I would retain every one of these guys.

Let Walk…

OT…Bobby Massie

DE…Nick Williams

OLB…Aaron Lynch

CB…Marcus Cooper

Massie is overpriced and unless we could bring him back for about half of what he is making now we move on…Williams is just a body…Lynch is the guy we let walk to save some money in order to ensure we can keep guys like Callahan and Amos while having a plan going into next offseason which will be huge for us…Cooper has been passed by guys currently on the roster let alone who else we bring in.

Release…

TE…Dion Sims

OT…Bradley Sowell

OG…Kyle Long

OLB…Sam Acho

Sims is as obvious a cut as Glennon last season…Sowell can be upgraded and potentially already has by Coward…Long has simply had one to many injuries to warrant continuing to pay him…as good a locker room presence as he is with our cap situation we have to move on a save the $8.5 million cap hit and use the $5.5 million on a guy like Whitehair…Acho is been a sneaky good pickup for us but with his cap figure and some of the young guys we have at the position we move on.

Trade…

Bears trade RB Jordan Howard for a 4th round pick…

There would be a number of takers for Howard this offseason…I feel I am low balling him at a 4th because as a player he is far more valuable that this but it is clear he does not fit the running style Nagy’s offence demands and there is no way we are going to pay him big money the following offseason so we sell to the highest bidder…sad to see him go because there is no doubt he is one of the better backs in the NFL.

Free Agents…

G…A.J Cann…6-3” 325lbs…

Cutting a player like Kyle Long is always tough due to the presence he has in the locker room but it’s time to move on due to the fact he is consistently injured…finding a solid, experienced and cost-effective replacement will be key…no one is going to mistake Cann for an elite guard but he brings the size and athletic ability to be a solid player inside next to Whitehair and Daniels…I think the Jags would like to retain him but already have $24 million locked up on their other two interior linemen…doubt they spend any more on that spot.

OT…Jake Fisher…6-6” 305lbs…

If Massie is left to walk we can look for cheaper replacements who fit our scheme…Fisher coming out of Oregon was seen as a somewhat of a stud but it never went right in Cincinnati…whither that be him not working hard enough, the scheme or the coaching it has just never clicked and he has lost his starting job to Bobby Hart…not a ringing endorsement I know but there are a few things going in his favour…still only 25 years old and with a ton of physical tools that a coach like HH can mould…also gets him back into a scheme more reminiscent of the Oregon one under Helfrich that make him look like such a prospect in the first place…he competes for a starting spot at RT and if he misses out he becomes one of the better backup LTs in the NFL…smart move for both.

Draft…

Round 3…

RB…Miles Sanders…5-11” 215lbs…Penn State…

After trading away Howard we need to find a running back who brings some of the same skills as him in terms of the ability to carry the load but who also has the shake ‘n’ bake that Nagy wants from his runners…enter Sanders who brings prototype size for the position and will be able to carry the back 20-25 times if needed…he has great acceleration through the hole and the balance to bounce off arm tackles as well as the moves to avoid them entirely…no one in this years draft is going to be Barkley but when you watch Sanders you can see they have a similar style…he has the hands to stay in instead of Cohen tipping the defence off and having both of them on the field at the same time  would be a nightmare for offences especially if we continue to see the same out of Gabriel and Miller when they run the ball…a lot of fun could be had with those 4 guys.

Round 4 (Trade of Howard)…

OT…Isaiah Prince…6-6” 310lbs…Ohio State…

Trubisky has shown us enough this season to say he is a franchise QB in my eyes…he is the leader of this team and come his 2nd season in this scheme I expect big things…what we can’t do tho is allow him to become a Russell Wilson type of guy where his ability to run becomes his need to run because of poor OL play…we have to keep this guy protected and as much as I have a lot of faith in the guys we have starting I feel it would only take one injury at OT to make things much more difficult…here we draft an outstanding athlete who is raw but has every tool needed to become an excellent OT…his size, length, strength & athleticism are all 1st round and when he uses his technique he is really good…problem being he is inconsistent and stands straight up off the snap as much as he uses that technique…a year to season under a coach like HH though and he could be outstanding.

Round 4…

OLB…Dewayne Hendrix…6-3” 265lbs…Pittsburgh…

By letting Lynch walk and resigning both Amos and Callaghan we leave ourselves short when it comes to pass rushers…this pick would not only give us that #3 rusher this season but will future proof us for when Floyd’s 5th year option isn’t picked up…Hendrix was at one point a very highly recruited prospect who went to Tennessee before transferring to Pitt where he has become quality all round OLB prospect…Hendrix looks explosive off the snap and uses his length and technique to fight off offensive linemen…he can bend and run the arc but also isn’t a one trick pony speed rusher as he brings real strength when engaging with linemen…sets the end well in the run game and again if he can become more consistent learning from a guy like Mack he can put his physical tools to good use.

Round 5…

DL…Kingsley Keke…6-4” 305lbs…Texas A&M…

I feel like we have stolen a quality rotational DL in the 5th round of this draft in Nichols and we should try and do the same again this year…we have seen just how important pass rush is to our team and adding to that is never a bad thing…Keke is very much so in the same vain as Nichols in terms of being a height/weight/speed guy who with proper coaching could develop along the same route.

Round 7…

CB…Jordan Wyatt…6-0” 193lbs…SMU…

This far down the board you’re just looking for BPA at a position where you are going to carry a lot of bodies…CB will always be a need and Wyatt brings a similar skill set to the type of CBs Fangio seems to like…good size/speed and ball skills…could bring something on teams as well.

Depth Chart…

Don't understand the continuing fascination with Kevin White. If the Bears can figure out a way to pay him less than the veteran's minimum, AND have him on special teams, sure. Otherwise...umm...no

Thinking that not only Massie is bad, but we can find somebody better, for half the price, is profoundly delusional.

The Bears would be STUPID to trade Howard for a fourth round pick.

There is no guarantee Jake Fisher  comes cheaply.

Isiah Price will be higher than a fourth round pick. You might as well mock Justin Herbert to the Bears in the sixth, so Trubisky has a young, quality backup.

I think this is solid and realistic.

I would be surprised if the Bears released Long, but it is a possibility.

I think the Howard trade is realistic. I think we can probably pull a 4th and 6th from a team like Miami.

We have 2 7th round picks. Deandre Hall has been active for the Eagles so we should meet the requirements of that trade.

I like it overall, but I’m not thrilled about O’Donnell. Not sure “below average” is considered “solid” but whatever. I also wouldn’t be in a huge hurry to keep White nor do I think he wants to be back.

I don't think O'Donnell is too bad...sure we should have competition for him but I reckon we can bring him back fairly cheaply...

We may not be in a big hurry to bring back White but again at a much reduced price and with a market that won't be anything special why not bring him back and see if we can finally get something from him.

I honestly can’t recall 3 times this year that O’Donnell has pinned the opposition inside the 5. He has a big leg at times, but when he’s punting from midfield or about midfield, it typically results in a ~30 yard punt. Imagine this defense if the other team had to start from inside the 5 once or twice every now and again.

Massie has his good and bad moments and that is not the guy you want to be paying $6+ million too.

The only thing stupid would be keeping Howard for another season when we don't use him right and then let him walk for nothing the next year...not a smart way of thinking there ace.

Fisher's market won't be hot.

Your view of Prince clearly doesn't line up with evaluators as he is being seen as a 3-5th round type of guy...all the attributes but far from the finished article...those guys have ceilings.

I mostly agree with @Heinz D.. I don't see any way that White's back, and letting Massie walk seems crazy to me. He's been very solid this season and at an economical price. I'd also rather keep Lynch than RRH.

Not sure $6+ million is economical considering our cap and what you can pick up at the RT position...Lynch would cost significantly more than RRH.

I hate releasing Long but man I just can't justify paying him to sit on IR.

I think a 4th & 6th for Howard is probably about what we get...he is worth more but other teams aren't stupid and know we are looking to move on before the big payday.

Getting that earlier 7th will be ideal for us to add to teams or another specialist.

6 is better than 10. I'd hate to save a million or two only to have an inferior player on the line. Massie's been solid and available; that's worth a lot. If that means not retaining someone like Amos, then so be it. Come to think of it, I'd rather have Lynch than Amos, too. (I realize that I like Lynch more than most on here.)

  Resign…

RB…Benny Cunningham (Doesn't matter)

FB…Michael Burton (Doesn't matter)

WR…Kevin White (He's gone).

WR…Josh Bellamy (Seems to be a survivor because of special teams - but doesn't matter)

OG…Bryan Witzmann (Yeah okay, I'm down with resigning him - he has played well).

OC…Eric Kush (Pass - not strong enough)

CB…Bryce Callahan (Would be nice - price will matter).

CB…Adrian Amos - (Safety not CB - we an afford to find someone else here if we need to - Amos is just a guy).

P…Pat O'Donnell - (Just a guy.)

LS…Patrick Scales - (Just a guy.)

RFA

TE…Ben Braunecker - (Nothing special.)

OT…Rashaad Coward - (Not enough information to say yes or no.  Need to see him practice.)

DE…Roy Robertson-Harris - (Yes I would keep him for right price.)

OLB…Isaiah Irving - (just a guy.)

S…DeAndre Houston-Carson - (just a guy.)

I would retain every one of these guys.

Let Walk…

OT…Bobby Massie (Disagree - he has played fairly well and OTs are very hard to find - Bears have zero OT depth).

DE…Nick Williams (who?)

OLB…Aaron Lynch (He's gone unless he is cheap.)

CB…Marcus Cooper (bye)

Release…

TE…Dion Sims (How did he make the team this year?)

OT…Bradley Sowell (Just a guy).

OG…Kyle Long (Cap may not allow it.)

OLB…Sam Acho (Again not sure how he made the 2018 roster).

  Trade…

Bears trade RB Jordan Howard for a 4th round pick…. (Not sure a 4th is on the table.   Still is running hard, Bears seem to want a pass receiving threat RB who can also quick hit on draws or quick gash on zone read - which Howard isn't.  He isn't fast twitch.  He is read a defender, make a good cut and run through tackles.  He would also excel with a FB in my opinion.  He would be an awesome 90s back.

I think he could still do well with some adjustments to the run game, he has shown he can succeed and excel in this league - not sure any team will trade for him in last year of his deal. Barring offensive adjustments, if he doesn't produce in last third of season and you can get a 4th then yeah take it.

Otherwise, no reason not to keep him at this point unless a more suitable option falls in your lap.  Resigning him may be a different conversation.)
