Craziest (FF Appropriate) True Story in your profession Thread

I've worked in hospitality for the past ten years and that is an industry with a plethora of crazy stories.  Weird things always happen in hotels.  They're not limited to the lesser properties, either.  I worked at a couple resorts where you need to pay a monthly membership just to be able to stay there and some really weird things happen there, too.  Seems like the more money have the weirder and perverse they get.

Brazen unsolicited sexual advances, unfathomable amounts of bodily discharges left in rooms, domestic violence situations, light witness protection type scenarios, borderline hostage situations, robbery attempts, drunken idiocy, inventive scams, sex trafficking... I've seen it all.

This is such a tease. It’s like the trailer for a Netflix docu-series.

Can't really talk about a lot of them and keep it FF appropriate.

I'll gloss over the sexual advances one by saying front desk gets hit on a lot with a lot of not-so-subtle invitations, and when you're maintenance, you sometimes get called in to fix things that aren't broken if they know you're the maintenance person on duty.

The bodily discharge one is mostly old incontinence, but also some people who get upset with hotel policies seem to forget that they've had their CC authorized for incidentals, so they... Leave their marks.

Domestic violence happens a lot where people are really afraid about so and so finding out they're staying there.  Gets really sad at times the fear they have.  I've also had occasions where the abusive half knows they're staying there and get abusive/threatening to front desk staff/myself because we won't tell them their room number.

The witness protection one isn't anything all that exciting, just drug stuff where the room had to be between two detectives.

I've only had one attempted robbery and it was very anticlimactic.  Somebody hopped the counter when I was in the back and I heard it, walked around the corner and he got spooked and ran out without having figured out how to get into the register.

The borderline hostage situation I wasn't there for, but somebody basically pulled an Everson Griffin and kept threatening to not let anybody leave and to not leave until his room was comped.  Cops ended up getting called.  Room wasn't comped.  Lol.

The drunken idiocy happens almost once a month.  One guy I had to escort back to his room after literally ten minutes of him not being able to remember his own name.  Almost had to call the cops because I couldn't confirm he was an actual guest since he didn't have his wallet, so once I got his name out of him I had to go into his room before him and get his wallet and confirm his identity.  By escort, I had to help him walk because he literally couldn't stand on his own.  That was the worst one and I just wanted to call the cops and let them worry about it, but whatever.

The scams are mostly calling for so and so room so they can pretend to be front desk, get those ones a lot.  There have been some new ones though where they've tried to pretend they were IT people and they needed us to plug in something or another to get access to our something.

The sex trafficking is surprisingly worst in Nebraska.  Didn't really have much of that until I got here, but it's bad here.  I've had to call police (which led to arrests) three times already.  Usually they try to get the victim to pay for the room with their ID and everything, claiming that their dad will be staying with them but they will be paying for it to avoid the 21 or older minimum.  Have to look out for them being scared/anxious and everything, and a lot of times you have to spot the victims coming in later, but it does happen a terrifying amount in this state.  It's why I always try to say hello to everyone I see coming through, especially when it looks remotely suspicious.

Setting the stage: Our office has a large cubicle farm where all the peasants work (probably 90% of the employees).  It's almost impossible to have a private phone call, but most people generally have the good sense to use their cell phone and step outside for personal calls or stuff they don't want others to hear.

But there are always a few people who are oblivious or don't care.

One time, probably around 5 or 6 PM, a guy makes a call to someone else in the office.  Don't know who he's talking to, but you know it's another guy from our company because they're talking shop.  Because of how late it is, a lot of people had cleared out.  But there's enough remaining for witnesses that you'd still want to step out for something private.  I'm still there, and so is a good friend of mine who has a cube right behind me (share a common wall).

Well anyway, he takes the call and starts talking about a woman who works at our company.  She's rather attractive, and had just recently returned to work from maternity leave.  He says something like "yeah, she's back at work...and you can really tell she's nursing!"

I immediately stood up and looked over at my friends cube, who had stood up as quick as i had.  Both wide eyed, thinking WTH did i just hear?!?

The guy wasn't fire and still works here.

Right outside our office one day I noticed there were a bunch of cop cars in the parking lot next to ours. I get intrigued and start paying attention. At least 5 cars and 10 officers are all pointing guns at this red car. After a minute or two some teens, one by one, get out of the car and slowly approach the cops with their hands up and get arrested. Every gun still pointed right at them. Really bizarre site. Apparently the kids stole the car they were in.

The craziest work story I have is my co-worker's attendance record without getting fired. I work in a small insurance office so we tend to rely on everyone being there to have days go efficiently. My ex-coworker was bad at this. Another coworker of mine actually made a timeline of all of these events by checking the calendar and tracking it all. Obviously some comedic notes were added. A lot of the reason this was able to go on for so long was because my boss had to hit his life bonus for the year and this coworkers numerous life policies (7 at certain points) this year were key towards hitting that goal.

  • 6/20/17- He interviews with boss

  • Late June to Early July- He doesn’t reply to bosses job offer

  • Mid July- He starts

  • Early August-He fails license exam for first time, 3 hours away from office. Closest exam station 15 mins away

  • Still Early August- He fails license exam for second time 3 hours away from office

  • Still Early August- He fails separate exam 1st attempt

  • More Early August- He misses multiple days to study for exams he keeps failing

  • Mid-August- He again unnecessarily takes exam three hours away from office. Missing full day of work

  • Mid-August- He reveals that he doesn’t know basic definitions of comprehensive and collision coverage

  • 8/17/2017- Calls in sick

  • 8/18/2017- He passes one license exam (but not other) on combined 9* attempts

  • 10/16/2017- He starts life policies on 3 kids

  • 10/30/2017-11/9/2017- He leaves an hour or two early every work day

  • 11/10/2017: He works full day

  • 11/13/2017-12/26/17-He leaves early or takes day off

  • 11/16/2017- His life policies on 3 kids lapse due to non-payment

  • 11/27/17-11/28/17- He works 2 full days

  • 12/29/17-2/2/18- He does not work full day

  • 3/8/18- He's Off

  • 4/12/18-4/16/18- He's off for a well-deserved vacation

  • April 2018- He joins work softball team

  • May 2018- He quits work softball team. Games are too hard to make

  • 5/4/18- He's Off

  • 5/7/18- He leaves early

  • 5/14/18 -He leaves early

  • 6/5/18- He leaves early

  • 6/14/18- He doesn’t work full day

  • 6/28/18- He leaves Early

  • 8/22/18-8/23/18- He's off

  • 10/24/18- He starts life policy on his wife

  • 10/22/18-12/4/18- He misses 3.5+ days per week (3 separate Fridays we are told this week is the last week)

  • Early November- He schedules day off for black Friday with no approval (day we already have off). Boss forces him to remove from calendar

  • 11/2/18- MILESTONE: 100 PARTIAL/FULL DAYS MISSED

  • 11/14/2018- Boss pays $100 to stop his life policies on his 3 kids from lapsing due to non-payment. Tells office he will be in tomorrow until 1:30 pm. Immediately contradicts that story 2 hours later. Does not show up 11/15.

You mean his livelihood wasn't taken from him for being uncouth? What a travesty!

I witnessed him start it a few weeks ago haha

The log started 18 months ago though lol..

At our job we use the calendar on outlook. So all you have to do is scroll back and look. For things he wasn't sure about he gave general estimates. Regardless, said co-worker is also my best friend of 20 years. I'm not too worried haha.

Had a guy die on the table on me.

I am a radiation therapist. I treat people with cancer. They aren't all "walky/talkys". Meaning some of them are inpatients and are literally at death's door. But they generally don't die on you while on the treatment table. They die up on the floor. Or they die in hospice. Because by the time they're THAT bad, treatment is halted and the priority becomes "comfort care."

But yeah... I had a guy come down. He was an inpatient. He had an odd set up that involved him laying on his side for treatment. Conscious and responsive, mind you. Weak and sick, but still there. So we got him lifted from his stretcher to the table and we were getting him set up and another therapist (without a ton of experience) whispered to be that he was "breathing funny." I looked down and it was clear he was "agonal breathing." Or, in layman's terms, "guppy breathing." If anyone has seen it, you will recognize it immediately. I saw it once on TV and my wife, who works in respiratory care and has watched between a hundred and two hundred people die, told me, "That is agonal breathing. If you ever see that, the person is getting ready to die. You literally have minutes at most."

So I said, "Oh <crap>! I am grabbing a nurse. He is crashing." And I ran out of the vault to grab a nurse. Thirty seconds later I walk back in and the therapists in the vault are like, "It's okay. He isn't doing it anymore." I look around and everyone is just standing there kinda waiting. So I run over and shake the patient and call his name. No answer. I try it again. No answer. I feel for a pulse. No pulse.

CODE BLUE!!!! CODE BLUE!!!

Pull him off the table back into the stretcher. Started CPR. Code gets called over the PA. Doctors trickle in from everywhere. Rapid response shows up. They manage to get an unstable pulse and bag him and rush him off. But he was never stabilized, he never woke up and the plug was pulled as soon as family could be contacted.

Working in IT for the most part is boring af but let me say this. If part of your job is being on conference calls and you want to make an offensive comment, follow these steps...

1) Ensure you're muted
2) Check again to ensure you're muted
3) Check several more times to ensure you're muted
4) After you've verified you're muted, still don't say it in case the mute button on your phone is broken.

I'm paranoid about that stuff so I never even think about saying some things that are on my mind. But not everyone is like me.

Guy: Talking about boring nonsense no one cares about.
Coworker: Ugh, you fat cu**
*Long pause*
Woman: EXCUSE ME!?!?!?

And they knew who it was. Needless to say, he works elsewhere now.

Ok here goes.... y’all asked.

1. Saw a woman provide perineal care to herself by using a can of Lysol.  She also would sell her lary tubes (who knows why anyone would buy these...) and had an STD in her laryngectomy stoma. Photo for reference....

Trachial_stoam_1_604_592bb57028f3.jpg

2. The spouse of a man with a trach lovingly referred to it as his snorkel (because he didn’t have to come up for air).

3. Same dude was in the unit for a long time, really nice and cool guy actually, and coded one night just as I was starting my shift.  Walked in, helped with the code and dude lived and woke up shortly after, sees me (we’d estsblished a good rapport by now), grabs my shirt and pulls me close to him and says “dude, I think you made me sh*t myself.”  He had in fact.

4. Same dude yet again got up to use the restroom and managed to get his nut sack between the toilet seat and the bowl when sitting down and immediately yelped.  I about pissed myself when he explained what happened. Had no clue such a thing was even possible.

5. Had a dude try to jump out a window head first but just knocked himself out.

6. Had a dude come in after getting burned during what was suspected as attempted arson.  He played the role of an innocent victim.  Had him hooked up to telemetry so we could see his heart rate obviously and in comes the local PD and FBI.  Dude got tachycardic real quick when they started asking questions... 😂
