I've kinda discovered why Samuels is always going to struggle to run the ball inside and won't be an every down back:

He's a long high strider.  He doesn't either keep his feet low or his steps short.  Guys like that don't start and stop well or change direction well.  They tend to be better open field threats.  Guys who get to the edge and turn the corner well on you.

And the reason he's working well with Ben today when Conner didn't.  He's the type of back that moves well from the shotgun formation, where Conner works better out of a deep set.  Shotgun set for a guy like Samuels means he's running across the formation often.
