2018 draft thread - still sucking a decade later

Yeah.  I don't think this team can continue to just goof around "collecting talent".  We do still have a bunch of needs...but after this season which looks headed toward another writeoff and high pick, you can't actually go into next season without a clear new hope for the future at QB.  You've gotta do something, and the draft is the place to do that.

With the number of potentially high-end QB prospects that could declare in this class, there's an outside chance somebody decent slips to the back end of the 1st or early 2nd perhaps.  Really going to have to see how that develops over the year.  But i wouldn't go in with the expectation you can just "pick BPA" and hope something falls into your lap QB-wise.  That's the spot that more than anything else, needs to be addressed (again).

I think with how deep this q.b class is we could wait till round 2 and still get a solid starter.

Sad thing is this isn’t wrong. The RB and SS should probably be the backups/depth, but everything else still feels like we need a starter.

Then you can add another LB or WR in if the team can’t retain both of Telvin and ARob.

I mean, it's possible...but given how this franchise has struggled for an eternity to find a solid starer anywhere, and that the odds of finding a solid quarterback tend to go down significantly as you get further into the draft and more and more teams have passed on the guy...I don't think it's very plausible.

Even if we don't lose Telvin and ARob, there's a good chance we need at least one, maybe 2 starting LBers for the future, and very possibly a #2WR as well.

Church will hopefully work out, but he will be 30 next year.  Getting a developmental guy for the future in there wouldn't be that bad either.  That's the problem with patching the team together via FA which they've delved into pretty heavily.  You get guys who are on the brink of decline...a couple solid years, and then you're probably looking to replace them via the draft anyway.  Especially at positions where it can take guys a year or two to really get their feet under them in the bigs.

Theres 4 seemingly worthwhile free agents. Be interesting if we chased them instead of pinning hopes on somehow hitting on a qb. The last good qb we hit on was garrard back in 2002 when he was picked in round 4

Wlbers are a dime a dozen. We can start brown or jack there.

I wouldnt be so sure of getting both this year. I doubt khan wants to be paying for 3 head coaches.

They won't.

It's a dark time rn with our QB situation and LG/RG/RT problems, but good lord. lol. We aren't firing/ditching Marrone after one season of being the HC with Bortles attached at his hip his first year after being one of the worst QB's in the NFL last year.

That’ll be fun. We’ll end up with a GM desperate enough to take a job where he’s not allowed to pick a head coach and has to right the ship of one of the worst teams in NFL history. That should work out just great.

And Bortles being tied to his hip is his own fault. Also his own fault that he stupidly tried to turn a gunslinger into a game manager. Coaching on both sides of the ball, while only preseason, have also been dreadfully bad. If things don’t change, it would be beyond stupid to stick with him going forward.

Even if we fire Caldwell and hire a new GM hes answering to Coughlin. Coughlin is making all the decisions here. So not sute what you even mean by a new GM being stuck with a HC, the new GM is stuck to whatever Coughlin wants.

Quality GM candidates don’t take jobs where they don’t get a say in the coaching staff. Dave only took the reduction in role because the alternative was being outright fired. Whoever comes in will have to answer to Coughlin, but any quality candidate is only going to come here if they have a large say in decisions. Coughlin’s job should largely be as an overseer of things, to help give the team direction and make those in the staff answer against the standards and directions set. If that’s not the case, we’re going to have some real big issues.

Well, according to Mike Silver he has pretty much full control.

Disagree. It's a pretty important spot. Especially in this day and age. Not to mention, Telvin is one of the precious few legitimate playmakers on this entire defence.

Heaven forbid they do let so let him walk, maybe Jack steps in there and does alright. But it's still a step back on a team that can't afford steps back. Running on a stupid treadmill losing one of the few actually good players they've drafted.

And whether or not Telvin walks...we still don't really have a quality future option at MLB or SAM. So...probably needs 2 LBers from somewhere. Even moving to a 3-4...probably still need a Poz replacement inside.

Yeah. Even if there's some sort of purge here...Coughlin looks sure to survive. Which means he's going to continue to be de facto GM and football dictator guy. Quality GM candidates aren't going to want anything to do with that.
