Bears Drive Killers w/ Gifs

So I define a Drive Killer as any play that puts you behind the chains to the point it's almost impossible to get back. I have the cutoffs at:

1st and 25

2nd and 16

3rd and 7

I'm a big believer that these are the plays that define an offense's production and wanted to put them out there for people to digest.

NOTE: The sideline camera at Soldier Field is placed super low and is roughly as old as the Dinosaurs they have in the Field Museum across the lawn, so these are not the best quality. Just another reason to hate that hell hole. Why do all the Chicago Stadiums (except the White Sox park) suck horribly?

Bears Drive Killers

1st Drive

3rd and 2: Unbelievable coaching job by the Bears. They have the exact right call dialed up to beat both the protection and the route concepts. All you can really do is tip your hat there. Well executed by them. I thought this was Taylor’s fault live. Looking at it, the protection was clearly dialed up to account for the other linebacker who dropped off.

2nd Drive

2nd and 10: Rodgers just completely misreads this defense. This is Cover-2 from the second the ball is snapped. That means the two vertical receivers are dead routes. You have to check down to the middle routes. You can’t stare down Davante Adams if he’s double covered. Read the defense and execute the offense.

3rd and 10: The drive is already dead by this standard, but I’ll finish out the drive. The play gives Rodgers  a decent look against the Cover-2. Adams and Cobb both run vertical routes to clear out the underneath players. That opens up Graham on the drag route underneath. Rodgers double clutches rather than throwing the drag route and gets sacked a second later. Maybe not a first down, but it sure would have been nice to try a field goal rather than taking a sack.

I like this picture because it's the perfect example of the Packers season. Spriggs is getting mauled, the interior of the line is an ugly heaping mess and Bakhtiari is doing his own thing doing an exemplary job in pass protection, meanwhile Rodgers is starring down Davante running a dead route while Jimmy Graham streaks open underneath for a first down/field goal range.

3rd Drive

2nd and 5: Danny Vitale completely butchers this lead block leading to a loss of 4. Horrible play by him.

3rd and 9: Another dead play. I’m not willing to put this entirely on Rodgers. He’s got a small window between the safety and the CB that he can put the ball into and that’s something you learn with practice between QB and WR. Let the record reflect this isn’t on EQ either. He got open here and could have had a TD. He did nothing wrong here, where you make that final cut in is just something a WR and QB need to be on the same page for. Might have been miscommunication, might have been ball placement. Sure would be nice if we could convert a tough throw this year.

4th Drive

3rd and 3: Jamaal Williams trips on Jason Spriggs feet. While I’m tempted to put this on pure dumbass luck, Williams does need to pick his feet up and know where he’s running. Blocking on this was upsettingly perfect if he doesn’t trip. That Center/Guard combo block was nice.

5th Drive

Clock and not doing **** on earlier downs despite some opportunities.

6th Drive

2nd and 7: Rodgers, quit ******* double clutching at open receivers. Adams is open. Throw the ball. He’s your primary read, you’re looking right at him. What the hell is the problem here?

3rd and 7: Another dead drive play. The decision was made at the line of scrimmage that Cobb was getting this ball. Never looked at a different receiver. Just threw it up for him. Where is this decision making with our non midget receivers????

7th Drive

2nd and 10:

Bears do exactly what you want them to do here and then Linsley, Pankey, and Graham combined can’t block anybody. Graham’s at least at a positional disadvantage with his guy shaded to the inside, but I’d appreciate it if he’d stop looking so damn uncomfortable with blocking and put his facemask into somebody’s chest.

3rd and 8: Dead drive, but Rodgers and Adams actually beat this one. Adams gets one on one coverage to the outside and Rodgers throws him a beautiful ball that he comes down with. We would go on to score here.

Link's not working, but that **** was sexy.

8th Drive

2nd and 12: Cobb stopped on his slant/corner route if that was indeed what it was called or if that’s just what it looked like. The Bears just played some straight man coverage with two safeties deep, and nobody was open initially.

https://imgur.com/akXolNb

3rd and 12: Dead drive. The Bears are going to play some straight Cover-4. MVS is going to get behind it and the ball is just going to get overthrown.

9th Drive

2nd and 15: Cobb with a drop, but the ball was behind him on a slant route. That’s a tough ball to catch if you’re a receiver. Need to throw slants in front of guys so they can run after the catch, not turn hands catchers into body catchers. Also ESB sitting there wide ******* open on his slant lol. Again, Cobb needs to catch this.

3rd and 15: Called screen pass got tipped by a defender on the way to the QB.

No video needed.

10th Drive

2nd and 9: Trying to run a slant to Kumerow, Bears had the perfect D called up, dropped their edge rusher right into the passing lane and gummed the whole play up. Just have to give them credit. Fangio's a helluva defensive coach and that Bears defense has some horses, even outside the blue chip guys.

https://imgur.com/Df3S7DK

3rd and 9: Graham was the right read. Ball placement was just behind Graham and the defender was in a better position to make a play on it. You'd appreciate if your star TE could come down with a meh throw, but you'd also appreciate if your star QB could stop with the meh throws.

That is the staple 4 verticals on 3rd and 7.  If the left outside WR cuts back underneath, that is a really nice open field with Cobb clearing out.

Was thinking the slot guy not the outside guy, but yeah.

Frankly I don't know how every offensive play doesn't have it's focus be, throw to the receivers standing behind the linebackers and in front of the safeties.

A thousand thanks for taking the time and eff the bears for that POS camera

Couple of comments on the 2018 Packers offense:

A QB returning from a major injury, including 2 plates and 13 screws
Didn't play in preseason
A QB who suffered a knee injury in game 1
A somewhat "new" offense (post-scrubbing) With new verbiage, so even the vets had to start over
New Offensive Coaches :  OC, Passing Game Coordinator, QB coach, WR coach
Jordy gone, Cobb injured, GMo injured
3 late round draft picks at WR in a system that takes time to assimilate
Suspended Jones, Injured Jones
Traded Monty
Added Graham and Lewis
Bulaga injured, McCray injured, Bell injured
Tissue Tension between QB1 and the highly successful NFL coach

But even after considering ALL of that, I watch the replays and just say:

Throw the ******* Ball !!

Okay, I didn't notice Jimmy (and neither did Aaron!).  But if AR is running for his life I can see why.

I can't mostly because I expect Aaron Rodgers to throw that in the end zone with no footing as if it were easy because that's what we paid him $30 million a  year to do lolol.

It looked like the RG or RT got beat and AR had to scramble out of there and had no where to go with the ball but it isn't easy to see for sure...

It's a 1 step hit your back foot throw hitch. Pre-snap fairly easy read with the cushion the corner is giving Davante. Corners first steps are back. Even if the lineman is beat, IT IS A HITCH! THROW THE BALL!!! This is junior high level right here. Line backer is matched up with the tight end who chips first, so the only explanation, which is way out of left field, is that Rodgers knew tight end was chipping so he thought linebacker would buzz flat? Still, it should never come to that and the ball should've been thrown. Putrid.

I meant more the fact that he looked at Davante the entire way. Davante was open. Rodgers pumped to Davante and then decided he wasn't in the mood.

I'm curious if your deadplay cutoffs are statistically motivated or based on gut? I've been looking for conversion stats by down and distance for a while now and had no luck finding any.

Based on an interview with Rodgers a few years ago, he said that it was important to get 3rd and 6 or shorter because the offense should always get 6 yards when it needs to.

3rd and 7 is also when even the most conservative defenses deploy their pressure packages.
