Well, we are more definitely sticking with zone blocking with these hires. Wherever Kubiak goes, runningbacks seem to thrive... even behind average offensive lines.

Now we just have to get then to average. Bring in Philbin to coach the OL still... Zimmer very close to just having a staff of all former HCs.

The Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns have each hosted former Green Bay Packers interim head coach Joe Philbin for interviews, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. While the specific position Philbin has interviewed for was not specified, he had previously interviewed for the offensive line job with the Minnesota Vikings.

Gary Kubiak, who spent the past two seasons as a senior personnel advisor for the Denver Broncos, has 24 years of coaching experience in the NFL, including 10 as a head coach. Kubiak spent nine seasons as a backup quarterback with the Broncos from 1983 to ’91, was the team’s offensive coordinator from 1995 to 2005 and also was Denver’s head coach in 2015 and 2016. Kubiak guided the Broncos to a Super Bowl title in 2015 but stepped down after the following season because of health-related reasons. Kubiak, who also coached the Houston Texans from 2006 to 2013, had an 82-75 regular-season record and 5-2 mark in the playoffs. Kubiak had been expected to return as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator next season under new coach Vic Fangio, but the Star Tribune reported the agreement fell apart over philosophical differences and Kubiak’s desire to rehire Dennison and Pariani. The Jacksonville Jaguars were reportedly interested in hiring Kubiak as their offensive coordinator.

Klint Kubiak will be making a return to the Vikings after having served on the team’s coaching staff as a quality control coach and assistant wide receivers coach in 2013 and 2014. Stefanski was a position coach for the Vikings at the time so the two are familiar with each other. Klint Kubiak had spent the past three years as an offensive assistant/quarterbacks coach for the Broncos. Kubiak left the Vikings to become the wide receivers coach at the University of Kansas in 2015.

The moves leave it uncertain what will happen with assistant coaches Clancy Barone and Todd Downing. Barone was Gary Kubiak’s offensive line coach in 2015 and 2016 in Denver. Barone coached Vikings tight ends in 2017 and then became co-offensive line coach this season after Tony Sparano passed away just before training camp.

Downing, an Eden Prairie native who got his start in the NFL working for the Vikings in 2001, joined the team as a senior offensive assistant last offseason after DeFilippo was hired but became tight ends coach when Barone shifted to the offensive line.

not sure if you younger guys know Kubiak was Elway's backup quarterback when they both played for the Broncos.

Kubiak has consistently been associated with legendary quarterbacks during his time in the NFL.

He was John Elway’s backup for nine seasons in Denver and was later Elway’s offensive coordinator with the Broncos from 1995 to 1998. Elway was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004. Kubiak was then hired by Elway as Denver’s head coach in 2015. The former teammates linked up to win a Super Bowl with Peyton Manning under center.

Kubiak also coached Hall of Famer Steve Young in 1994 with the 49ers. Young put together the best season of his career under Kubiak as he threw for 3,969 yards with 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 70.3 percent of his passes.

Backup QBs in football are made to be head coaches...just like catchers are in MLB to be managers.  That's why in 10-15 years, we'll probably see head coaches like Chase Daniel, Nick Foles, Derek Anderson, Kyle Orton and/or Brian Hoyer.  :D

I wouldn't be tremendously surprised to see Barone stay as OL coach.  I would be surprised to see Downing remain, unless it's to go back to the "special assignments" position that he was originally hired for.

Wouldn't be surprised given this organization... but I'd be terrified.

It all depends on what his duties as o-lone coach would include. Usually o-line coaches are responsible for designing and implementing the run game. I doubt the o-line coach will have those duties with Kubiak aboard.

So, if the o-Line coach(es) are simply expected to teach, then I’m not so worried.
