Smetana's Pre Combine Mock

Not going to get into coaching hires as I don't have strong feelings one way or another for any particular candidate. I would like to see Pettine stick around, and thus we're still running a 3-4.

Released/Let go:

Cobb: can't stay healthy and when he does he looks slow and so limited athletically now. Injuries have completely taken their toll.

Wilkerson: was really looking forward to seeing if he could rebound under Pettine but an injury took that away from him. Lowery, Lancaster, and Adams all had their moments of good play in his absence, and combined with an early draft pick, there's no need to spend resources on Wilkerson.

Tramon Williams: appreciate everything he's done for us over the last decade, but he just doesn't have it anymore, and there's no real spot for him. Releasing him saves is roughly 5 million.

Retained:

Breeland: was very good for us in his limited time after getting past the foot complications. We've spent enough early draft capital on the position as of late, and I'd like to see our resources spent elsewhere. There's no reason to let a quality corner walk and we ink him close to his original deal with the Panthers: 3 years/21 million

Clay Matthews: much like Jordy, there's still a spot for him on an NFL roster at the right price. Edge rush is definitely a need, but not one I want to spend a lot of early draft capital on with numerous holes on the roster. He'd be perfect in rotation and long down/distances or taking some looks at ILB. 2 years/12 million.

All other UFA's walk, projected remaining salary: 25 million.

Free Agency:

Tyrann Matheiu/S: Reports out of Houston is that they love him and he loves them, but this is my mock and my #1 want. He's had a fantastic rebound of a year and he brings the same presence Alexander does: cocky, confident, fiery, and passionate. He's going to bring it every week. Our defense needs more guys like that. Fantastic in run support and true student of the game, making him a great captain from the safety position. Him, Alexander, and Daniels gives us a lot of attitude/swag on defense. 4 years/44 million

Billy Turner/OL: a few down years in Miami found him looking for work in Denver. He's played all over the line in his career, but has really settled in nicely this year at LG. Last I looked PFF loves him. We bring him in to man RG, allowing any OL drafted not to be thrusted into starting. Offers versatility at every position. 3 years/15 million.

Jermaine Kearse/WR: an experienced slot WR who's still young and has a few years to offer. A very good route runner, he's underwhelmed on a bad NY team, and doesn't command a huge contract. 3 years/18 million

Draft 2019:

#12: Montez Sweat, OLB, Miss. St.

http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2019MSweat.php

#32: Zach Allen, DL, Boston College

http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2019ZAllen.php

2nd round #44: Nasir Adderley, S, Delaware

https://thedraftnetwork.com/2018/12/23/2019-nfl-draft-player-profile-nasir-adderley/

3rd round: Andre Dillard, OT, Wash. St. - will need a year to add strength. Campen will also have to work with him on foot work, but the tools are there.

Gute sees a highly talented player falling due to a deep draft and character issues. They trade both 4th rounders to jump back into the 3rd and select:

3rd round: Jeffrey Simmons, DT, Mississippi - undoubtedly going to slide due to a leaked video of a street fight where women were involved. But there's no denying the talent. Teams are certainly going to dig deep into his background and prod him a lot in interviews.

5th round: Matt Gay, K, Utah - competition for Crosby. Has a big leg and accurate from 50+

6th round: Hunter Renfrow, WR, Clemson - not overly explosive, but knows how to get open and is sure handed

In a deep defensive class, I'd like to go there multiple times early and add to the foundation we already have set, with our free agent dollars going towards immediate help for Rodgers while letting the offensive prospects time to grow. Safety gets a major overhaul, DL gets two big contributors while being a low key need, and our edge group is talented and deep with Sweat/Matthews/Perry/Fackrell all getting snaps. I don't expect the Simmons pick to be popular, but he's definitely talented if the background checks out.

I don't see Simmons sliding out of round 1. The NFL only pretends to care about these things. As long as he didn't cold-**** a woman in the video, he's going in round 1.

If he did hit a woman in the video then the NFL will pretend to care.

My only complaint with this is I don't think Matthews is worth 6 million. He's not nearly as valuable on the inside any longer and he needs to move on.

The video on Simmons is already out there. He's not sliding to the ******* 3rd round lol

I haven't seen the video but from the way it sounds it's worse than the Mixon incident. Wasn't he considered a Top 15 talent and arguably the best RB in his class? He fell to the mid second. Between teams completely removing him from their boards (green bay likely one) and a deep line class, I could see a slide. Maybe not to the middle of 3, but easily to the middle of 2.

Hard to say without seeing what happens before. Certainly bad.

Also just depressing from a societal standpoint.

Also if somebody gave me 10:1 odds of an NFL employee losing their job because of racist **** said about this video, I'd take it in a heart beat.

Think you have a better chance of getting Simmons in the 2nd, Adderley in the 3rd and a player of Dillard’s caliber in the 4th. Like the players though.

Simmons isn't going to slide to the 3rd round.  The incident occurred when he was in high school.  It is not worse than Mixon's video IMO.   It is a hard video to watch though.

With his pass rushing talent, he is more likely to go nearer to our #12 pick than he is to go with a late 3rd round pick.

Adderley is the hot topic right now, but he needs to have a really good combine to cover for playing at a lower level of competition.

I don't see Williams falling nearly that far, like at all.

I'm not a Sweat fan at #12.  He's got the frame, but no strength and I haven't seen much of a burst off of the edge.

Like the thought in the mock and off-season, though.
