@DreamKid we all saw how special Bowser was week 2 of his rookie year against the Browns. He had a sack (IIRC) and an INT and was defensive ROTW - then Dean Pees never played him again after that. The kid deserves snaps - MEANINGFUL SNAPS - because his efficiency stats indicate he'd be a solid player if he played more.

I'm not sure what happened to Tim Williams this past year to get into the dog house, but he's got a chance to start this year and should damn well take advantage of it.

I think we're in a good position. Either way Williams and Bowser will get their time. So if we sign Justin Houston, great. If we don't, then hey we just get to see more of Tyus and Tim.

We'll need Judon to step up as well. He's going to be one of the main players now.

I'm really not understanding the lack of market for Brent Urban. There could be negotiations ongoing right now but I'm wondering why we haven't extended him yet, he's a really solid player for us. Won't show up on the sack sheet but he's the definition of solid. What gives?

Nobody is in the market for a depth DE.

Preview of negotiations with Judon. O.o

I don't see him accepting an early deal, now that he'll be cooking enough snaps to bake a strong UFA stat line. This one isn't hard to predict folks. He'll want more or the same kind of money ZDS got. And as we've all seen, it doesn't look his play warrants that kind of investment.

Expect the team to double dip at EDGE in the draft again.

The signing of a guy like Justin Houston could dictate how early we go EDGE too.

Let's not forget Von Miller is a FA next year. Total pipe dream scenario that likely doesn't happen. If we lose Judon, it would that's so Raven of us to go after Miller if he hit the market.

The Ravens have no choice but to drown Tyus and Tim in playing time at this point. They're the Vets now, and with their contracts up in 2 years the team has to see what they fully have in them.

Bowser will take hold of a starting role, but Tim will always kind of be a rotational player. Which is fine, it suits his skill set. Assuming Judon doesn't make a huge leap, the team likely won't match the big time money being thrown at him in FA. So he'll go the way so many of our Good-Not Great defenders have gone.

Which will leave us shorthanded an every down EDGE piece. So the position is actually somewhat of a priority in DeCosta's mind right now, I'm sure. If we sign a Justin Houston to a multi year deal, then the projection isn't so rough. And we can just add some Mid Round options. If we don't though, then an early round EDGE is perfectly acceptable. 1st Round even.

I'm totally fine with Judon walking, tbh. I know I say this a lot about various players, but he's completely overrated. He was completely invisible last year as a player DESPITE playing 60% or more of snaps on the field, until the last 4 or so games when he finally showed up.

He came into the league as a pass-rushing specialist out of a D2 school but none of that seems to have carried over, because right now he's basically just a balanced OLB who doesn't excel in any one area. I'd be 100% okay with going through the draft to get pass rushers again, but something needs to be said about how often we take pass rush specialists who simply "lose" all of that ability once they're here while our interior guys like ZDS or McPhee become beasts.

Not sure if it's coaching ("stop doing those spin moves and just use your hands to create leverage") or if these guys just can't hack it at the pro level consistently.

Well, Judon wasn't really a "pass rush specialist". That phrase signifies a player who is typically brought in on passing downs exclusively to get after QBs. Judon was just a guy that had a lot of college production, similar to Suggs. Obviously at a much lower level though. And it has translated to some degree, he's not a bad pass rusher or even a bad player. He's just not that Franchise guy we've been looking for to replace Suggs or to spend a lot of $$$ on. He's best suited as a 2nd/3rd option in a team's outside pass rush rotation.

I think the coaching of technique with everyone is fine. It's the square peg in a round hole stuff that has hurt some of our players in the past. Forcing them into non ideal positions, or not using their skill set properly etc etc.

Miller's market will be interesting if the Broncos don't re-sign him. He's going to be 31 for the start of the 2020 season. The money it takes to get him might not be ridiculous.

What is story on Za Smith?

Had a breakout year in a contract year, similar to various previous Ravens pass rushers such as Paul Kruger, Arthur Jones and Pernell McPhee.

Why did Ravens let him go?  Seems a huge red flag, but I don't know the story.

We let him go because he's not worth anywhere near what the Packers just paid him and we'd rather have a 3rd round comp pick. It's not a red flag that we let him go, it's just how we do business here. We lock up our cornerstone pieces when that can happen, but generally we churn out pass rushers into the comp system unless they're truly something special (Terrell Suggs).

Zardarius Smith got a huge contract the Ravens couldn't/wouldn't match. There are no red flags. Productive inside/outside pass rusher, no off field issues, hard worker, well liked, does a lot of dirty work, not a lot of mileage on his threads. Great player, just got too expensive for what the Ravens could afford. Fit the profile of a Ravens player that shines the most in his contract year and goes elsewhere to get paid.
