Draft Discussion 2019

Recommended Posts

told the Dolphins spent a lot of time with Mississippi St DE Montez Sweat in Mobile last week. And all reports from folks in attendance say that Sweat had a great week of practice.

Let's see DE Harris in a 3-4 scheme. I feel the entire front 7 were weakened by the Wide-9 scheme so you can't judge any of them...yet.

Beat reporters are saying that the Miami scouts have spent TONS of time grinding on DE's this year. They feel that DE will be the target in the 1st round this year. Harris is a bust, Wake is probably done, and the other DE's are over paid. In fact, Miami has literally no young talent at DE, unlike the rest of the defense where there are at least young players who can contribute. They are also saying that Miami isn't interested in pass rush specialists, they want a complete DE that can stay on the field. Players I would keep an eye on are. Rashan Gary, 6-5 287 lbs. Jachai Polite, 6-2 260 lbs. Clelin Ferrell, 6-5 265 lbs.

I think Gary can be a really good 3-4 DE.  The shoulder injuries scare me a bit though.

Or a 4-3 DE. I think whomever our first round DE would be should probably have some scheme versatility if we're running a 4-3/3-4 hybrid.

He's more of a pass-rushing DT in a 4-3.  But he definitely would have some scheme versatility.  Like I said, I only question the shoulder with Gary.

Sure Gary could fill that DT pass rush role in a NASCAR package but I can see him as a traditional 4-3 DE or a 5 technique in a 3/4.  I think if Gary is available at pick 13 he would be a great pick.

I also like Montez Sweat at pick 13.  He reminds me of Chandler Jones and could be that explosive edge player in any Defensive front.......which fits right into our upcoming install of a 3-4 / 4-3 hybrid.

I see Gary and Sweat both as defensive front players that never come off the field regardless of defensive front alignments.

Here is a little bit of insight into Coach Flores mentality when it comes to the draft. Besides QB, Flores said that the most important position group on the field is the offensive and defensive lines. He said that the trenches are the engine that controls the rest of the offense and defense. Flores said that he firmly believes that players must be well rounded. WR's must be good run blockers, TE's must be able to help in the running game, DE's must be able to set the edge in run support, DT's must be able to collapse the pocket. He said that he is very demanding when it comes to technique and consistency. His attitude is that overall athletic ability isn't as important as having solid technique. We should all take that into consideration when looking at prospects.

Sounds like the Dolphins got the right head coach. Meanwhile the Pats are stuck with Josh McDaniels who is probably hoping to take over as head coach in the next five years.

That screams Zach Allen. Good enough athlete with good size and great technique and maybe strength.

The wide 9 is supposed to benefit DEs though

I am not enthralled with Zach Allen.  I'm actually not sure I would take him in the 1st round at all.  He's Matt Roth v 2.0.  I don't see the "good enough athlete" part with him to make any sort of impact at the next level.

It gave them the benefit of being 10 yards away from where the play was happening heh

The other thing that Coach Flores recently stated is that he will use the 4-3, 3-4, 4-2-5, 3-2-6, based on what the opposing offense is doing. He said that the defense will be very fluid, and schemes will change weekly based on opponent. So the secondary will have to be able to play both man and zone, and LB's and D-line have to be scheme versatile. This is what is fueling the speculation that much of our core defensive players from last year will be gone.
