Kind of confused.  Are you saying we are looking for “true” DE’s as in a traditional 4-3 DE or or a “versatile” DE that can play in multiple fronts successfully.......as in 4-3 and a 3-4?????  I’m reading it as if you are saying both.......to me a “versatile” DE, a “hybrid” DE, and a tweener DE are all pretty much the same thing.

My opinion is that we are really looking for a 3-4 OLB regardless of what we want to call him.  There’s 2 positions that we don’t currently have on our roster to play the kind of Defensive front we want.  That’s a true NT and a 3-4 OLB.  Harris might be better as a 3-4 OLB but we will still need 1 more.

I've been wondering about this since last year, when Patricia left the Pats for his HC gig with the Lions...and an early move was dumping DT Akeem Spence who is a Fin now. What was it about Spence that made Patricia not want him for the 3-4/4-3 hybrid nickel dime base specialist defense teams run today?

Because Spencer is a fine player, and not overly expensive. It was a puzzle then and a puzzle now. I can see Spence doing great in '19, the D can't be much worse than this year when everyone looked lost.

I agree wholeheartedly with the bolded.  I think 3-4 OLB should be a primary focus this draft very early on.  It just so happens that the BPA  easily could be that very position when #13 rolls around.

Found in another part of the forum quoted from Dave Te Thomas...

Alright, this took calls to several teams to find out this was not some poo being passed around. While Cincinnati has been talking to teams to get Dwayne Haskins, the Raiders, Dolphins and Redskins are doing tons of homework on Lock.

Chucky (Gruden) loves the kid and while he loves most things throwing a football not named Derek Carr, he's starting to get antsy, thus the recent talks with SF to see what 'ya want for #2.

Miami meanwhile, has little interest in Haskins (soft body) and feel Daniel Jones is more hype than substance (kid's ears must be burning from all the Dolphs not-my-guy talks) but really think that Lock is worth jumping into the top five to ******. Now, it comes down to making an offer. It will certainly cost them the #13 & #48 picks, but Miami also has indicated they will sweeten the deal with some 2020 stocking stuffers, as they have just seven picks in this draft.

Where might this affect the Giants? DG likes to stockpile picks. Now with #6, he might have interest in the first & second Dolphin choices to move down seven slots, possibly toss in a 5 to get a 4.
Still, suddenly, they are looking at Lock as a valid #6 guy themselves, hmm.

If one of the following guys falls to Miami at #13, who would you take....

Ed Oliver

Dwayne Haskins

Montez Sweat

Drew Lock

Devin White

Dwayne Haskins.  I think he has the accuracy in the intermediate passing game and the ability to put the ball in his guys hands through a tight window.  His deep ball accuracy isn’t great but it’s pretty good.  He needs to develop and polish his footwork......that’s his only real negative that I see in his game.  That should be an easy fix.

So what if I’m wrong and Haskins turns out to be a bust?  Then we should be looking good for drafting a QB in 2020.  We trade Haskins for a 2020 or 2021 2nd or maybe even a 3rd to a QB needy team ( see Arizona’s Josh Rosen, which they might even get a late 1st rounder for ).

I think Haskins has the “it” factor and is debatably the best QB in this draft.  There’s no way he will be available at number 13.  I think he would’ve been a top 10 pick even in last years QB class......He would’ve been the 2nd or 3rd QB drafted IMO.

50 TD’s ( tied for 4th all time single season with Derek Carr and Sam Bradford ) to only 8 INT’s.....70% completion rate....373 completions.....over 4,800 yards passing, and these stats come from playing against solid big 10 defenses.

Bumping this thread for my final prediction before tonights draft.

Crystal Ball tells me that with pick 13 of the 2019 NFL Draft......The Miami Dolphins, after failing to trade down, select.......

DT Dexter Lawrence Clemson..... ( Wilkins will be gone already as will Murray and Haskins )

Can't wait to see what completely pedestrian player we select.

Definitely won't be a QB - all the smoke points to the Dolphins actively tanking for the 2020 draft.

Frankly, I think I'm gonna watch the Orville instead.

2 of the past 3 1st rounders look to be franchise players.  Gotta have some faith!

I assume you're talking about Fitzpatrick and Tunsil considering Harris is a straight up bust... Fitzpatrick has looked good for a rookie, sure, but way too soon to say. Tunsil has been serviceable and seems to be getting better but has underachieved what we thought he'd be.

I really have no faith in this organization anymore. As long as a buffoon like Ross is at the top, we're pretty much doomed to this cycle. Even when we somehow manage to find talent, we just let the all walk away in free agency or trade them away.

Fitzpatrick looked good, period.  Rookie or not, he was one of the best slot corners in the NFL last season when he played there, and that was playing out of position.  When he goes back to FS, he's gonna ball out.

Tunsil isn't the surefire hall-of-famer that some thought he was going to be when picked up, so that's fair.  But he's had absolute crap next to him his entire career so far, and didn't he only allow 1 sack all of last year?  With a QB as woefully inept at avoiding pressure as Tannehill was, that's impressive.

Don't get me wrong, I'm optimistic about both but neither can be fully described as "hits" yet.

I hope we go OL with every pick this year if the plan truly is to tank for Tua. Hopefully find two starters, grab another interior OL in free agency next year and hopefully give whoever our franchise QB of the future is some time so we don't ruin him like we did Tannehill.

Of course knowing this FO we're going to probably draft a DE.

I think a nice DE prospect would have the biggest impact at #13. We should be able to get starters on the OL Day 2 if we had to. I'd be cool with OL in R1 if we traded down.

DEs would have absolutely no impact on this team because this team has no inherent offense to speak of. We need to grab players who will help us develop a franchise QB because we will not win games without one.
